What is your favorite handgun/knife carry combo for woods walking?

For simple hiking in low critter confines, a J snub will usually suffice paired with an Emerson folder. In more wilderness oriented environments, the J will be replaced with a 65 3", 686 2", or 624 snub, and a stout fixed blade will be along for the ride, such as the current Gerber LMF Asek or something from Ontario Knife Co. The Emerson is always present, no matter what. I recently picked up a new toy to include in the mix ... a Stealth axe from Daniel Winkler. It's essentially a smaller version of Mr. Winkler's WKII Combat Axe, which technically falls in the category of "tactical tomahawk". The Stealth is similar in stature to a mini-hatchet with a spike opposite the blade, but can be wielded much more like a fighting knife. First class craftsmanship, and an excellent tool.

I'm with the banned ...

I mostly will carry my 696 and a Buck Vanguard. Of course, the SAK is always in my pocket and usually a Leatherman.

Of course this will vary because of weather, intent, mood, rummaging thru the gunsafe and finding something I haven't seen in awhile, or coolness factor.

I am too lazy and out of shape to "walk the woods". However I am out often on the trails with my quad. Thats very dusty and shakey. Therfore I dont take my best pristine guns. Also for no good reason I seldom take the same gun twice in a row as I have quite a few.
Probley the one I take the most is a old but nice m&p. Next to that I would say a old converted HD to .44 special. I have many more exspendsive, higher condition revolvers but dont like to knock them around or get em dusty. As far as knifes go, I have a super light clip buck 181c I carry. Maybe its because I gave it to dad 20 years ago and took it back when he died 9 years ago. I belive my favorite knife is the mikrco (sp?) lakota shown with that .44 special converted HD. Let me add something here. I have many old classic guns. Pythons, smiths, colt single actions, rugers etc. To pack, the old m&p usualy gets the nod. For weight, accuracy, portability etc its very hard to beat! Especialy if you feel you can get by with a .38 special.

I hiked on a trail surrounded by thick woods and brush in the Mountains of southeastern West Virginia a couple of weeks ago. I happened to come around a bend on a steep part and there were two black bears forraging close to the trail. I tend to walk quietly and so I think we surprised each other. There was a smaller one, a yearling cub I suspect and a bigger one. I think that was the mother. The small one ignored me but the other one turned in my direction and lowered her head and stared at me...At, that point I had a 7" blade Entrek Elk knife on my belt and my S&W 337ti in my side pouch. I wished I had something a bit bigger just then. I stayed calm and just slowly backed away and went the way I had come...Of course, usually I like to carry my 625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt loaded with 250 gr LSWC at about 900 fps...But, I was lazy that day and didn't want to carry the weight up a steep trail. I am usually more concerned more about the two legged wildlife and ferril animals and the .38 seemed adequate. Sometimes, when I want more rounds and a good amount of potency, I may carry my Glock 23 or 27 with one or two G22 mags. In a folder, I like my Spyderco Military combined with my old SAK Tradesman.

When I take a stroll in the woods I will carry my M65 stoked with BB 180 grain Hard Cast Lead Flat Point .357 Magnums. They are the hottest heavy weight bullet on the market for a .357 Magnum and will do an honest 1,325 fps (about 780 ft. pounds of energy) out of my 3" M65. The gun is easy to carry and while it has a stiff recoil, it is still quite manageable and very accurate. Practice with this load helps immensely.

Where I hike, there are many bears and even though I would hate to shoot one, I would if I had to to defend my (or fellow hikers) life. While certainly not an optimal Bear load, I feel that in the mountains that I hike it will do the job on the bears living there. I would not use it for Kodiak's, Grizzly's or really big Bears, but for the Black Bears in the Berkshires it's (IMHO) adequate in the loading above.

For two legged animals, the BB 158 (JHP) .357 Magnums are what I carry in the same Revolver, but most of the time while hiking through town I will use my M60-7 stoked with BB 158 grain +P LSWCHP-GC .38 Special rounds.

As for the knife....... 95% of the time I carry an old Marble's (Gladstone made) Large Stockman pocket knife with three carbon steel blades and Sambar Stag sides. The other 5% of the time I'll carry a Marbles Sheath knife (also a Gladstone made knife of Carbon Steel) with Sambar handle as well. Love those OLD Marble's knives (unfortunately not available anymore) as opposed to the new junk made in China and marked Marble's.

No woods within 100 miles of here, but when I used to go out in the desert a lot I finally settled on a Ruger Security Six 6", carried in an El Paso Saddlery cross draw holster. Also carried a SAK, or sometimes some sort of other folder, Also carried a Buck 4 inch blade, forget the name or number. Now I might carry a 625 mountain gun in 45 Colt instead of the Ruger.

Our woods options are palmetto..or beach..and wear for both is t-shirt and shorts.. but never Speedo. Here is my walking around gear;



I do remember the North woods and a 742 in 30-06 and a Western sheath knife always got me in and out.
