Ugly Pump Shotgun
Bought another ugly shotgun. Model 12 Winchester in 16 gauge. Polychoke on it. Has a Williams oversized safety installed. Came with 7 boxes of high wall brass... Thinkin maybe $250 was prolly to much to pay, right ?

$225-250 for one with a dog ball on the end of it is going rate around here, and there is no shortage of model 12's with poly chokes in this area. There is, however, a shortage of replacement full length barrels at a reasonable price.
Poly chokes work as well, if not better than new fangled internal chokes, but they just look hideous!
I'm just wondering why no one has seen it profitable to offer officially licensed and correctly marked replacement barrels for Winchester model 12's and 97's.
Your gun does have a marvelously figured and attractive stock! I'd have to pull the trigger on that one! Very nice indeed!

If it had a synthetic stock you might get your money back out of it. That stock that is on it now is to "grainy" for today's style.
I might have an extra synthetic stock laying around the house. Just send me your old grainy stock and I will get you a new high speed low drag state of the art synthetic one. That way maybe you could get your money back out of it.
Just trying to help

Andy,...
Believe it or not, Winchester made some guns with the poly choke at the factory. It is marked on original box end labels. Mine, isn't one of those guns...
However, I kinda like the way this gun balances and can get use to the choke. Actually, I kind of like it....reminds me of one of my Dads old guns. Back in the day, lots of folks wanted one...

If you spray everything with a couple cans of camo paint you can pass that choke off as a tactical faux silencer and triple your money.

My late dad bought me a 16 gauge like that, with Poly Choke, for high
school graduation. It is a lot more beat up but he only paid $35 for it back then.
It was my main grouse gun for years. I also killed squirrels, a couple of geese and a three-point whitetail buck with it. Never got a rabbit or hare with it, strange to say.
It's semi-retired now since I am hunting grouse with a 20 gauge over and under these days.
I am mildly looking for a Winchester 12 in 20 gauge but all the ones I've seen are pricey. Might have bought that one if I'd seen it,
even though I already have a 16, due to the stock.

Beautiful piece Giz. I have his older brother from 1921 here, those 16s are sweet to shoot.

Giz, are you bragging or complaining about the price? If you can find 16 gauge shells there easily, I'd say you got a good deal. I like the wood in that stock!

Yeah, I hate it when I see those chokes on a nice shotgun. I have a 12 Gauge M12 my Dad bought me in 1979, when I was 14. It is marked cylinder bore, but has an adjustable choke mounted. Looks like heck, but it sure is handy! I can open it all the way up for close shots or tighten it down to full for long range shooting. I've hunted with it every year since I got it, and it's brought home a lot of game, mostly pheasants.
The 16 Gauge is one of my favorites. In the M12 it's built on a smaller receiver than the 12 Gauge, which can be a bit clunky. The 16 just feels perfect to me. I have a 16 Gauge M12 with a cylinder bore, and it is DEADLY on Iowa pheasants. It's a joy to carry, and I shoot it much better than my 12 or 20 Gauge M12s. Go ahead and shoot that one. That's what it was made for.

Nice old classic with a beautiful piece of wood. Being that Maine has a lot of grouse, are you a grouse hunter? Would love to roam the woods where you are with that gun. Enjoy it. Larry

Take a hacksaw and chop off that ugly buttstock wood. Send it to me
and i'll send you a small check to cover getting a fiberglass replacement.
Next add yourself a pistol grip and an extension tube and you will be
ready for anything.
All kiddin' aside, that is a beautiful piece of wood. I'd have paid 250 for the stock.

The finest pump shotgun ever built. That was a killer deal but the
Win M12s have been coming down in price over all. Around my area $350-$400 will buy a nice one (12 or 16g). The market is
for tactical and hi tech guns. Us older guys that bought and used
them are dying off and more of them are coming on the market.
New generation aren't buying them. So if not collector grade the
classic repeaters of milled construction will be bargains. I was at
a gun auction that had a dozen nice used M12s. Average price was $350, again 12g & 16g, the 20s bring more. The 28g guns
bring crazy money. What struck me was used Moss and other
such guns were bring as much or more, especially if Camo or some type of tactical model.

Very nice find. Another one of John M. Browning's timeless classics. The model 12 was used in 4 different wars. I just could never get use to the safety being in the front.

Beautiful shotgun, even with the polychoke. I have a 16 ga that I gave $200.00 for, a couple of years ago. 28" modified choke, it looks good with my 20 gauge. Would like to have a 12 in it.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

Back in the 60's and 70's the Poly choke was in..........
My father even chopped off a few inches from a Browning A-5
and had a poly put on his beautiful 30" 12 Ga. shotgun, so he
could use it on Quail and upland birds.
Now that was a UGLY short barrel shotgun !!
That model 12 looks a LOT better.

So that's a polychoke. Not being a shotgun person I always thought they were an attempt to put some Buck Rogers style on the barrel.

OBVIOUSLY, YOUR DAD LOOKED UPON HIS A-5 AS A TOOL, AND WANTED TO INCREASE ITS UTILITY.......
BACK IN THE DAY, MY DAD FINALLY BOUGHT HIMSELF A MUCH NEEDED NEW CAR. WHEN I VISITED TO SEE IT, THERE WAS A BEAUTIFUL BRAND NEW OLDSMOBILE IN THE DRIVEWAY. ATOP THE HOOD WAS A BUSHELL BASKET OF CHICKEN MANURE, THAT HE WAS USING TO FERTILIZE HIS PLANTS. ON THAT PARTICULAR DAY, HIS OLDS WAS DOUBLING AS A WHEEL BARROW.....
I THINK THAT THIS MUST BE A TRAIT, THAT IS SHARED BY PEOPLE WHO HAD LIVED THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION, AND THE RATIONING OF WW II....

Hope you have a Lawyer on Retainer, because you flat out STOLE that shotgun. I have a Browning BPS that I was perfectly content to pay 500 dollars for because the lumber was quite nice and condition for a 30 year old shotgun was near perfect. However compared to that figuring in your butt stock the stock on my Browning is near Plywood.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Poly chokes are all that hideous looking. Sure, given the choice between an unaltered gun and one with a Poly I'd take the unaltered one. But I'd never let the presence of a Poly dissuade me from a great deal.

I don't care if the thread is six years old, that is a sweet shotgun and I would have jumped on it, Poly-Choke and all.

Me neither since they're so easy to cut off. I've got several of
them in a bench drawer with other junk gun parts.

At the time when virtually all shotguns came from the factory with barrels in one choke size only, the Polychoke and the Cutts Comp (with choke tubes) were considered as high-tech by most hunters, and with very good reason (as well as a few other types of variable choke devices by other makers). I remember one ingenious device that could be set at a more open choke setting and automatically changed to a tighter choke after the first shot. I always wondered how it did that.
