Service rifle anyone?
Does anyone on here shoot service rifle matches? I volunteered to coach an ROTC shooting team, and part of the competition is in service rifle matches. I don't know too much about these events. Anyone have any hints or any good resources? Thanks!

I very much enjoy participating in vintage military rifle matches. I have found a lot of helpful information at the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The website is: Civilian Marksmanship Program . HTH. Sincerely. brucev.

The NRA and the CMP should have a lot of info for you.
If there is a local club running matches you might go and observe, or shoot. They often have rifles, and some other gear, available for loan to new shooters.

Go to the CMP e-store, book store and get the AMY Service Rifle Guide, $6.95. Covers everything you need for service rifle plus has a coaching section.
And yes I've been shooting service rifle for a bit over 35 years, With the M1, M14/M1A and AR, Also coached the AK NG Rifle team for about 12-13 years.
PM me if you need any assistance.

I salute you volunteering for ROTC shooting. Make sure you and your team have good hearing and eye protection and use them. My best friend in High school got a ROTC scholarship and then failed the hearing test due to the time spent shooting on the indoor range. I was just a little nubbin when our High school ROTC instructor provided marksmanship instruction. MSG Burns turned out to be one of the top three most influential men in my life. I spent 45 years shooting, and remember him daily making sure we were doing it right. I shot All Army Rifle and Pistol matches until I retired. In 2003 I came in Second in the Alaska Service match rifle competition. I showed up in a field jacket, with my M1A, using Porteguese surplus ammo, and was master unclassified. Heck the guy I was teamed up with lent me his leather shooting jacket and 10 extra bullets, it seemed I had miscounted the amount of ammo I needed!!
Lastly, hammer in the safety rules, the range is loud, a lot of things going on at the same time and you have shooters that might be pulling the trigger for the first time.

Thank you, Kraig! I just ordered two of the AMU books, one for rifle and one for pistol.
I am really excited about the prospects of coaching, but I have some big shoes to fill. The team won the Command Sergeant Major's Team championship at Ft Benning the last two years, and one of the cadets earned the President's Hundred last year. Unfortunately, a lot of the experienced shooters have graduated.
We are shooting at a 100 yard reduced competition/clinic this weekend. Hopefully, I don't embarrass myself too badly...

You might also take a look at the Jim Hill video's and the David Tubb's DVD. Good information.
Randy
PS. I too have shot Service Rifle matches since 1987 with my M1A and AR15. I've done many new shooter clinics and coached teams in state matches. Made Master and Distinguished Rifleman in 1990.
