Default Taurus 709

So I've been lusting after the shield for some time now. Last night 4 of us went up to the range, one friend had the 709 slim, another the shield. Suffice to say I fell in love with 709. And at a price point, currently, almost 275 dollars less, I couldn't help it!

A lot of people like the Taurus PT709, nice piece.

They make it in 40 cal too, (PT740), I think that may be a bit too much for its overall weight.

Default So, Sambuh, tell us what you think of it after the range ...

... I'd really like to know what you think of it after shooting it a bit. I keep reading really good reviews of the 709 Slims and the PT-111 G2's and want to hear about a Taurus from someone on the S&W Forum.

The price is hard to beat, it's a really nice looking gun and it looks like it would make an excellent carry piece.

So how about a review Sambuh? Pretty please? LOL!

Safe shooting-

I can tell you about my Taurus PT-145. I was like most people and thought I didn't want anything Taurus made. I was actually looking for one of those "G word" pistols when the guy who runs the LGS told me to forget that and get a Taurus instead. What??? He kept telling me how they were better guns for half the price. OK I'll need to check that. I went on the net and found nothing but rave reviews of that pistol. But I still wasn't convinced. I went back to the LGS and the owner made me a deal I couldn't refuse. Not that kind of deal but just too tempting to pass up. He offered to let me keep it for a month and then return it if I didn't like it for any reason. Hmm... How could I go wrong?

At the time I had been carrying a Sig P220 for years. I wanted something with more capacity and something smaller. I figured one of those "G word" guns would do the trick but none of them fit my hand at all. I think that company has a strange idea of what fits a human hand.

So anyway I'm looking at this Tardis - errr... Taurus (it only seems like a Tardis) that held 10 + 1 rounds of .45 ACP in a gun that was no wider than a single stack. How did that do that? I could hide it in the palm of my hand. Not possible but yet there it was. Lifetime warranty (yeah I know a Taurus warranty) made a good impression. And the thing fit my hand like a glove.

So I took one home to "try out". He knew I'd never bring it back. I was back in 3 days buying more mags for it instead.

That pistol is crazy accurate and has a perfect straight back recoil that led to perfect follow up shots once I adjusted my stance a little. I wasn't used to a pistol that came straight back like that. The Sig flipped like a short order cook at IHop.

I started putting a lot of rounds through that pistol because I wasn't about to trust a Taurus unless I "knew" it was reliable. I shot a couple thousand rounds through it and NOT ONE FAILURE of any kind. Plus the thing gives you a second chance on a misfire in DA mode rather than having to eject and try a new round. Another great feature IMO.

The accuracy was just unbelievable considering how short the barrel is. And I got to where I could put 11 rounds in a 8" target at 25 yards in 10 seconds! Wow. I was in love. I still love that pistol despite the recall. Yes they will sometimes fire even with the safety engaged if you drop it on something hard. But I dropped mine a couple of times and nothing happened. I don't take the chance any more.

I carried that pistol for several years until I found a great deal on a SA XDm .40. Another LGS sold me that one cheap because it had a feeding issue. No problem. I sent it to Springfield and they fixed it for free. I knew they would.

I've put over 5000 rounds through that Taurus so far and it still has never failed even once. And the accuracy (yeah I'm repeating myself but that's because it is VERY accurate) just blows me away. My friend and shooting buddy asked me one day to show him just how well I could shoot. He set up 3 .45 casings. 2 were at 20 yards and 1 at 25 yards. I hit both the 2 at 20 yards and missed the third one about half an inch. That's some serious accuracy for a $225 pistol. Yep that's all I paid for it and it came with 2 mags.

Taurus would buy it back from me right now because of the recall (not an actual recall) but I don't have any desire to get rid of that piece. It's right by my foot right now for that "just in case" moment you hope never comes. I don't see many that shoot that well. BTW I have a G2 111 and it isn't as accurate. But it is still an accurate pistol. Not many will shoot like that PT-145 though. My Sig will but that thing cost 3 times what the Taurus did and it would be 4X today.

Taurus makes some real junk at times. But not every time. Sometimes they hit it out of the park. This one even has a nice little rail where I mounted a laser. It stays zeroed and the pistol puts the bullets right on the spot.

The only thing I didn't like about that pistol was the sights so I changed those for some fiber optic sights. Firesights I believe. It's been so long I don't remember for sure. That's probably what I used.

Here's a quick snap shot I took of that pistol. It's still around doing it's job well.

Here's an ad for them from before they stopped selling them. It has all the particulars etc..

RedPointGS...I have several S&W handguns (6906, 39-2, SD9VE, M&P FS, and a 2214). They all function well and are fun to shoot. But I'm also a Taurus fan and have the 709 Slim and the PT111 G2. Both are great guns and are used for edc.

I have a couple of Taurus guns and they have been fine. I thought about the 709, but when I handled one I didn't like the way the trigger guard window gets narrower the closer you get to where it meets the grip. My fingers are kinda thick so that one aspect of the 709 didn't work for me.

A lot of people bad mouth Taurus. I own 4 and like every one .
Model PT92 F in 9 mm. Model 455 , 45 acp tracker(ported 2 inch barrel)fixed sights . Model 445 , 44 special (2 inch barrel)fixed sights. and a model 627, 357 magnum, 4 inch ported barrel with adjustable sights.

My one big complaint ....I would like a 45 acp tracker with a 4 inch barrel and adjustable sights.

Right now the 455 is the most accurate 45 acp I have ever fired....its spooky the way it will shoot tiny groups....a longer barrel and adjustable sights would be awesome !

Don't let the nay sayers stop you from trying a Taurus....you just might like it. I like every one of mine

Default I too am a fan...

I am a Taurus fan as well... I think my current count is 5... with number 6 on the way...

My first semi-auto pistol was a PT99... pre decocker when I was single a long LONG time ago... then a PT1911 when they came out... 450 ultra lite in 45 LC... 44 Tracker snubby 44Mag Talo special... and another PT99 as a spare...

I am currently waiting on a TCP 380 in a few weeks...

I have been shooting the PT99 for almost 30 years... competition for a time.. only mods are a set of pachmayr grips and a wolf recoil spring... great pistol... well over 10,000 rounds thru it... not the junk some think they are...
