Post Will Obama move to outlaw knives?

I do not want to take anything away from the horrible tragedy that took place today at Lone Star Community College in Texas, BUT, it just seems to me that mentally ill people will carry out their dastardly deeds with whatever weapon that they can get their hands on. Outlawing guns, or knives or crow bars, or axe handles, etc. is obviously not the answer. Reform in the area of the treatment of mentally ill persons is our only hope!

We will know if he will move to outlaw knives if he invites the families of these victims to take a flight aboard Air Force One.
But I doubt it. (Unless there'a a later Coroner's report that ALL the victims were stabbed with An AR-15 Bushmaster Bayonet with the thing that goes up on the shoulder.)

Jesting aside, any (mass or single) assault is a tragedy and should not be used to dance on graves and forward one's political agenda.

Nothing would surprise me; a story in the London Times detailed their byzantine knife laws (perfect match to their gun laws), where a homeowner defended himself against a violent and armed intruder who just happened to break in and enter said abode. The homeowner stabs the creep with a kitchen knife, gets arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, and gets sued by the well known one man crime wave. You'd think there would be a Castle Doctrine in merry 'ol England, given the number of castles in that once powerfull, and now failing empire.

A background check would have prevented this. We must follow the English and outlaw all knives with sharp points. They all must have rounded tips to prevent this type of thing.

I can see it now, the next time I go into Hobby Lobby to buy a pack of No. 11 blades for my X-acto knife I will have to show my CCDW license and drivers license while waiting on the background check to be done.

He would if he could. As stated, it has been done. Fools never give up. I see where PETA wants to employ drones? Shoot them down would be the choice here. Idiots all, but they are slowely but surely removing our rights, including the right to defend ourselves. Glad I picked up a 300 blade pack for my matt cutter last year.

How insightful... and more to the point NO KIDS WERE MURDERED in that cowardly attack! BTW; how many 2A patriots really believe that their weapons will have to be turned against their fellow Americans in some video game nightmare scenario?

OH! That many?!
How sad.

Buddy old friend,a good post. The ground work is already being laid by the TSA's recent good knife-bad knife list.Smooth handle=good, finger grooves=bad,folder=good,non-folder=bad etc. In the recent publication.
It is interesting,on a historical note that until the invention of Colt's revolver the Bowie knife was the deadliest close quarters weapon and due to it's popularity and widespread use many states outlawed both Bowie Knives and Arkansas Toothpicks.A few years ago I studied this subject and was amazed how heavily armed citizens were.Sometimes carrying two or three single shot percussion pistols and two knives.Life was exciting and ceap in those days.

Four words: no way in hell.

He's not going to "outlaw" guns either. I don't understand how people can seriously think he or anyone else could get that to fly. Or enforce it if they seriously tried.

Politicians are realists. At least most of them are. And this isn't the UK.

I hear Brownell's has a six month backorder for X-acto knives.

I figured the President would use this attack in his effort to get more gun control. After all, none of his other proposals would have made any difference in the past three massacres.

All kidding aside, I am glad to hear that no one was killed and I pray it stays that way.

Just another proof that people with concealed weapon permits should be allowed to carry on campus.

Just wondering if it had more then 2 military features like a barrel shroud or other assaulting weapon features... I guess no politician will talk about this...

Move to outlaw knives? Nah....

But it wouldn't surprise me to see Washington gun-grabbers spin this horrible event for their cause. Something like this ---

As terrible as this situation was, just think how much worse it would have been had this troubled young man had military style assault weapons with a lot of clips (Washington technical speak). Instead of 14 injured, there might have been dozens dead. Reference Sandy Hook.

-- Wouldn't surprise me at all...

Give MSNBC 24 hours and they will think of a way to employ knives into the gun control issue.

The enemy (and we had better regard them as such, for they are attempting to wage war on us and our Constitution and way of life) likes to say that mass kilings only happen here, due to our "lax" laws. Today in Serbia, a man killed about 13 people in a mass shooting.

I didn't watch the news yet today; got that off the Net this AM and have e-mailed a friend in that city (Belgrade) to see what's happened. I don't think the perp was anywhere near her university, so am not too worried about her. But Serbia probably has much more harsh laws re guns than we do. So did Norway. Remember that event?

A few years ago, some nut in China cut quite a swath among the innocent with a large knife.

Those whose minds are such that they don't care about others and who want instant publicity on a large scale will continue to do things like this, especially where they know that anyone else will be unarmed.

I doubt that I can answer this question with regard to Obama without violating the board policy about discussing politics. But I do think he will try to lmiit access to all weapons and make us a nation of unarmed sheep if he can.
I am fully convinced that educators, the media, and others are involved in a campaign to make people think of knives, guns, and anything else that they can use to defend themselves with as being bad.

Yes, we are heading for a fate like that of the UK if things don't change. Too many here are drinking the socialist Kool-Aid.

I carry a knife everyday. I have many to choose from but this is my most recent acquisition: Spartan - 21S :: Cold Steel Knives - YouTube

I'm sure they'll find a reason to ban it.

We've had a bit of fun with this very serious subject, but in Great Britian right now it is against the law to carry a knife and as someone pointed out using a kitchen knife to defend yourself in your own kitchen is illegal there. In the old Scottish costume a sgain dubh is a specialized knife (dagger) worn in the sock. They now sell them in Great Britain without blades so you can keep your costume somewhat authentic without violating the law.

Remember, the second amendment does not cover edged weapons.

Technically the word "arms" covers a lot of ground.

Soldiers carried knives, bayonets and swords and one of the founders wrote the people should have the same type of equipment that soldiers commonly did.

Merchant ships and privateers were also armed with cannon.
So were militia units.

In fact, one of the items the Regulars marched out of Boston to
confiscate on April 19, 1775, was a cannon.

So were militia units.

In fact, one of the items the Regulars marched out of Boston to
confiscate on April 19, 1775, was a cannon.
In NC it is illegal to carry concealed outside your own home any edged weapon (including a butcher knife) other than a "small" folding pocket knife less than 4½" long folded. This applies to stun guns and throwing stars.

The cause is obvious even from my sandbagged bunker behind my M-60 Pig that the miscreant was obviously running with his X-acto Blade and ran into those fourteen people by accident. He couldn't have done it on purpose because he didn't use a firearm. When will they ever learn not to run with pointed objects! Even the President in his latest speech has stated we should make it harder to kill our children. If we can't believe him, just who can you believe and trust?
"Lord, Make Me Fast And Accurate
Let My Aim Be True
And My Hand Faster
Than Those Who Would Seek To Destroy Me And Mine
Grant Me Accuracy Over My Foes And Those That Wish
To Destroy Me
Let Not My Last Thought Be, If I Only Had My Gun
And Lord, If Today Is Truly The Day You Call Me Home
Let Me Die In An Empty Pile Of Brass"

The word "army" comes from "arms" and armies existed long before the invention of firearms.

You'll be limited to seven blades.

I can even think of a future (2084?) where two intellectuals would be having a conversation, "Remember, our History books used to mention that there was, a long time ago (or not so very long) that we used to have an Amendment between the 1st and the 3rd but for the life of me I can't remember what it was about." "Did you Google it?"
"Yes. I Googled Amendments but Wicky-pedia said that back in the early days of the Revolution, they were bad at arithmetic and probably just forgot to write anything under the 2A heading."

Earlier this year, our state senator introduced a knife control bill:
SB 740 :: Oregon Legislature Bill Tracker - Your Government - The Oregonian
He was ahead of the curve.
BTW, he's an ardent 2A supporter and the bill was to show the silliness of much that's being proposed re: firearms.
The scary part is now it may well advance:
Requires criminal history record check for transfer of knife from knife dealer to purchaser.
Prohibits transferring knife to disqualified purchaser.
Punishes by maximum of one year's imprisonment, $6,250 fine, or both.
Prohibits transfer of knife in violation of criminal history record check requirement.
Punishes by maximum of one year's imprisonment, $6,250 fine, or both.
Requires Department of State Police to maintain registry of all knives transferred in state.
Directs department to establish rules implementing registration requirement.
Applies to transfers of knives initiated on or after January 1, 2015.
