Default '49 Colt Officers Model Special - What To Do?

Finish is seriously degraded, but the action and lockup are superb. Shoots accurately out to 50yds.

What would you do with this old Colt?

Shoot it and see how many rounds you can put through it by the end of the year. Please report back in and show pictures. The Colt will probably look better in December with a little snow on it!!

Enjoy it.

Treasure it, shoot it, enjoy it, treat it with the respect it deserves, and pass it down to your great-grandkids.

Personally I would see if I could talk Colt into refinishing it. They usually dont like working on such an old gun, but of you get a hold of Brett T (shop Mgr.) you might be able to twist his arm into doing it. Their refinishing is currently outstanding!

If that is not an option than just gently clean off the rust with either 0000 steel or Bronze wool with plenty of oil and shoot it. Keep it oiled so the rust does not resurface.

I agree. Shoot it!

Looks like your OMS was stored improperly and has surface rust. Have you tried bronze wool and some oil, very, very lightly and carefully, checking as you go?

Mine has a trigger shoe, Sandersons, and the smoothest action of any of my guns. I don't know for sure, but I think it must have been tuned by one heckuva smith way back when. I like that retro, ray gun-looking front sight!

They have a different look to them with the front site the way it is. I'd love to have one in a shooter grade. Shoot the heck out of you're gun. I will have an old Colt one day, Larry

Yeah load up some hollow based wadcutters and shoot the hell out of it. My first center fire handgun was one of those things, it had King ramp sights on it and was a real sweetheart to shoot, accurate as hell. I later traded it for a .357 magnum and should have read the warning signs when the guy I bought it from traded me straight across for a Colt Trooper MKIII which was worth a hell of a lot more than I paid for the old Colt a couple years earlier.
By the way I could never get that Trooper to shoot as nice as that old Officer's model.

When I first hired in to lockheed as a guard in 1965 we still had some OMM`s even older than that model to practice with. Our main issue back then was 4" offical polices built in the early 50s. My first good centerfire that I bought was a used OMM built probley towards the end of production around 1960. I soon bought a new 4" 357 trooper as they were easy to pack. The other day I found some old pictures and seen that I carried the old 6" OMM I had with a crossdraw setup when I worked at universal studio. Then I got digging in the garage and found that holster. I cant remember where I sold that gun. Who knows? It might still be in a box somewhere!

Thumbs up

I would soak her in Breakfree for about 3/4 days, then go over her with the FINIEST brass or copper wool I could find, 0000 steel wool if there is no other choice, very lightly checking as you go, Clean her off good, and just shoot the world out of her. NICE!!!!

That's darn near the perfect gun. You can't mess up the finish! In fact, the more you shoot it and clean afterwards, the better it will look. So get to work!
