It has little value being so old. I don't know about a better place to post this, but I know a better place to keep it. I'll send you my address.

How's the lock up and timing? Does it have 4 clicks when you cock the hammer?

First the bad. Mixed parts, the barrel has been chopped back and you say it has timeing issues and wore. The good part is these are still worth a lot even in that condition. I aint up on prices much but since you asked I would take a wild guess anywhere from $750s to $950??
To get a much better answer go here:

Strike the above. When I said the barrel was chopped I was looking at the left side of the gun. It did looked chopped, not the standard 4 3/4" nor the 5 1/2" but in between. Then I looked at the right side and it does look 4 3/4". Is it .32 win? The front sight looks too short for 44 wcf or .45 colt.

EZ way to tell if it is a 4WCF (44-40) is if the barrel sez Frontier Six Shooter.

If it does, the the cal is 44-40

Default barrel length

the barrel length is 4 3/4" and i think the timing is good. it locks up but the cylinder can turn maybe 1/10th of a turn when cocked. i think that is due to the amount of wear on the cylinder catches. im beginning to think that it is a 45 because the barrel diameter is way larger than a 41 mag lead

I own at the moment 4 colt single actions. This picture with two of them, the top one is .45 colt, the bottom is .44 special. Notice the big difference in the front sight from yours. Also the caliber should be on the barrel unless it was highly buffed off in a refinish.

This is a colt in .32 wcf. Notice the lower front sight.

The original caliber was most likely stamped on the trigger guard bow in that early serial number range (early 1880's).

It could have been a 44-40, 45Colt, even a 45 Boxer.

The switched trigger guard and backstrap have elliminated any way short of a factory letter in figuring out what the caliber was originally.

What it is now,,check the chamber dimensions,,even a visual check can help lead to a decision. The 44-40 has a slight bottle neck, the 45Colt does not.
Slug the bore to find out what caliber it is if you're not sure by any other method. It's not uncommon on old switched bbl and cylinder SAA's to find 44cal cylinders w/45cal bbls and even the reverse.

The etched panel 'Colt Frontier Six Shooter' on the bbl denoting the 44-40 caliber came just a bit later than this frame ser# by most collectors accounts,,but never say never,,as soon as you do someone will show up with one to prove everyone wrong.

Probably a $600 to $900 gun depending on the mechanics, bore and the overall condition of the rest of the parts. I see the cylinder pin looks like a modern replacement,,probably gunsmith made.
Grips I'm guessing are probably replacements.
People still like 'em even if rode hard. They still say Colt.

Looks like a black powder Colt with the cylinder pin retained by a screw.

The early BP colts did have that cylinder pin set up. They went to the spring crosspin roughly when they went to smokeless powder.

If it's 44-40 it's a first year production 1878 frame. The trigger guard looks like 1884. It wears later non eagle colt grips. the cylinder pin is a replacement. I can't see it too well but the front sight looks replaced with a dovetail base, which might mean a cut down barrel. The barrel has no markings visable anymore. I really like it. All that said I have no clue what to ask for it.
