Default New Remington R51 vs Model 51

As an owner of a Remington Model 51 (as noted in previous postings) I am curious to know if anyone has had a chance to shoot the new Remington R51

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgqtnA4t98U

not a lot of details on it yet but due in February

I shall own one when they are available. Perhaps two, if and when the 40 version is available. I have two old 51's, and have always wondered why they weren't available in 9mm. Now they are, albeit somewhat uglier. I hope they new one is easier to disassemble/reassemble.

Modern autoloaders bore me to death. Until now, anyway. My dad had an original in the 60's so I always had an affection for the old ones. this new version is modern but keeps the same basic lines of the original. I really like it. Especially at around $389.

Is the frame polymer, aluminum, or steel? I can't seem to find an answer.

According to one source I found, it is aluminum. Sounds good to me.

Hadn't heard of this. Anyone got photos? Is this a .380 like the old one?

I'm not really a 9mm kinda guy. But if it feels and shoots as good as it looks, I just might have to get me one of those.

How do the dimensions compare with the original? I am a bit in the air on the looks of this gun but it will look better if it works.

Did anyone notice the address on the side of the pistol?

"Charlotte NC"

To me, it's just another jam-o-matic, recontoured and repackaged by an industrial designer to have a "legacy." *yawn*
Looks to have either a cast or MIM trigger.

Puts me in mind of the Steyr M9, and cross it with a HK P7 and just a bit of styling from the 51.

There just isn't enough to set it apart from the hoards of other black pistols from various sundry commercial and boutique manufacturers.

Never know...parts could be coming from Mayoden NC.

Smart move to get away from the NY unions though.

I'm just a highly opinioned curmudgeon.

You can see photos at The Firearm Blog, or [email protected].

I have an original in .380 and the 9mm R-51 interests me quite a bit.
A couple of guys I shoot with were interested to hear about it too.

The blog I saw said it would be shipped to dealers by Feb. 1. This looks like a very interesting handgun.

Meh..............If I feel the need for a 9mm that size I'd go with the shield.
Sorry

The one photo that I saw reminded me of the Colt 2000. Hope it runs better than the Colt did.

One blog I read said the pistol was going to be manufactured for Remington by Para Ordinance here in the U.S.

I'm wondering if it is safe to carry "cocked and locked" since it is a single action. It supposedly has an internal drop safety, but the only external safety is the grip safety. Any thoughts on this?

I'm sure the gun rags will praise it to the skies, in articles interspersed with ads for the piece. I can't buy one, but if I were in the market I'd wait till some people here tried it and posted their impressions.

Cynical? Oh, maybe a little.

It looks interesting...but I've pretty much eliminated my gun buying except from companies that are American and provide a lifetime warranty. Last I knew, Remington only had a one year warranty (this was a couple of years ago, when I owned a 1911 R1.) I'm just saying what I like to do, no criticism intended for anyone else's choices.

For the record, I do consider RIA/Armscorp to be sufficiently "American" so I can justify liking and owning their 1911s. (They do have a presence in America, after all...besides, it's MY logic, and it doesn't have to makes sense.)

To me, that is a disgrace to the original 51. New guns are just ugly these days.

I want a gun that size, but it's going to have to be a Mak or a CZ82.

I still regret that I traded away a Remington 51 in .380 years ago. What a great little gun. Accurate and had that natural pointability like a 1911.

Don't really have any thoughts on the "new" 51's other than I'll give them some time and see how they stack-up.....I really don't have a need for any more .380's or 9mm's so I'm really neutral on 'em.

Having said that ....I would jump at the chance to get another one of the older Model 51's if the price was right.

I think it's pretty cool looking.
Since I've got a Shield, I'm not in the market for a slim 9mm.
But I give Remington credit for trying something different.
It's occurred to me that the long gun market - hunting guns in particular - is probably pretty fixed and stagnant, whereas the concealed carry market is growing by leaps and bounds.

You know, it looks a little bit like the ray guns you used to see the space men use on the Saturday morning cartoons many years ago.

I kinda like the way it looks. I don't have any autoloaders anymore with the exception of Dad's bring-back Nambu, and I'm a traditionalist when it comes to guns, but that one appeals to me for some reason. It does have a bit of a retro look.

But to paraphrase T. Whelen, only autoloaders that work are interesting. Time will tell with that one.
