Mossberg 500

Newly acquired Mossberg 500, picked up from gander mountain. Anyone wanna give me some suggestions on necessary mods or any pertinent info I need to know?

Also.. Can I extend the amount of shells it holds?

The only thing I would definately suggest is to get rid of that side saddle ammo carrier. Looking at how its mounted I'd say it would interfere with operation of the safety if you're right handed. Just my own preference, but I don't like a pistol grip on a Mossy because of the location of the safety on top of the reciever, which I do like. If it has the plastic safety button, I would suggest replacing that.
Mossberg makes a fine shotgun. There are lots of stuff you can do to it. Looks like it already has a rail, so optics would be easy. A light on a defensive shotgun is a good idea. And I'm sure someone sells a mag tube extention for that.

Here's my old 590. over the years I've added the sights, sling, forearm and a light. Just to give you a few ideas.

Oh and I have a question... I bought this gun used from gander mountain, luckily I bought the protection plan (which is very unlike me) well anyways, the safety seems to be broken. It won't activate in either position, it fires from "safe" and "fire".


Am I missing something or do I have a faulty safety switch?

Get that safety attended to right away! Something is wrong.

Because of the way the barrel mounts to the end of the magazine, you can't buy an extension.

As for mods, I highly recommend Brownells' metal safety. It has a little hump which makes it easier to use. I agree that a light is a must for a defensive shotgun.

No modifications are necessary.

Get the safety fixed.

These are inexpensive guns.

Save your money to buy a better quality gun.

Sinking money into a 500 is frivolous.

A light might seem like a good idea, but it's an unnecessary addition.

Spend the money on ammo and fees at a trap range.

When you can break 20 out of 25, then decide what additions you 'need'.

Just my opinion, of course.

Get the safety fixed, then buy lots of ammo and shoot the heck out of it. Then sell it and get a Mossberg 590 or Remington 870.

So what are the cons to the 500? My only use for it are home defense and shooting targets (especially watermelons). I've read a lot about how it's a very reliable weapon.. So why don't you guys like it?

The 500 is a very versatile and reliable shotgun, indeed. Combat proven proven and LE likes it too. But it's also a lesser expensive shotgun.

That's the reason I would not put much money into it for upgrades, rather use it as is.

Since you have the tactical model it should have the 590 barrel and tube. Then you could indeed buy a 2rnd extension tube.

I like 500/590 a lot and have put many slugs through the rifled barrel hunting, and many rounds of buck and slugs through 18-20 inch barrels. I agree with a light, maybe inexpensive red dot?, I can not tell if you have a front sight or just a bead. The shell holder/caddy appears broken and should be on the other side. It also appears that the fore end was changed? It might have been a Tactical SPX to start with. I am not familiar with Gander's protection plan, I also do not know why they would sell it with a malfunctioning safety?? I would make sure that they fix the safety and insure that it functions otherwise I think I would make them AWARE of the liability issues. If they repair it, shoot it, know where your slug and buck hit, a light makes it easier to hit things in the dark and allows you to verify your target. Clean it, lube it, shoot it, Repeat. Be Safe,

It just has a bead, and I'm gonna remove that shell holder and put a 6 shell holder on the opposite side.

Also, I bought this gun used from gander mountain. Since it was used it decided I would spend the 30 extra dollars just to be safe and buy into their firearm protection program. I asked the guy at the counter when I bought it if they check these guns and he said they do a basic function test and that's it (I would assume the safety was a basic function) but anyways they have an awesome gun selection and nice employees.

I would definitely have them repair the safety and any other problems. You can run snap caps through it to asses function ( NOT LIVE AMMO ). Be Safe,

+1 to Continental Op's post, the plastic safety switch will eventually break & you'll be using the screw, (which gets a little rough on your thumb), until you can get a replacement.

I have owned nothing but Mossberg 500's for fifty years. The newest is circa 1970. (Well, OK I also have a Parker, but that doesn't count). My Son also shoots a M-500 as well. Now, having said that I wouldn't have a new one if it was given to me for free. Mossberg has gone to **** in recent years. Lots of their products are imports, not the "Made in USA" they touted when the old family members ran the company. Check the serial number to see how old it is. Used is fine but if its made in the last 15 years I'd sell it.

On another note, Gander is a good vendor and they will fix any problem with the safety.

Someone else said Remington 870. I'd sooner go with a Newer M-500. The 870 has been **** since the 1980's. If you find an older 870 it will be about the best you can buy.

You got a good utility grade gun. I've had several and killed a lot of turkeys and a few deer with mossberg shotguns, never had a malfunction. You don't need to think about upgrading and getting a recent manufacture Remington would be a step back. Study your patterns with different rounds and you may want to look at adjustable fiber optic sights and also various choke tubes add versatility.

So I bought a Tri rail for my mossy 500 but when I disassembled it I realized it doesn't have an "action slide tube" it just has the rail thingys (see pic) attached directly to the foreend. Therefore this makes my tri-rail virtually useless at this point.



My question is, what parts do I need to purchase to make this work on my gun?

I was thinking these, but correct me if I'm wrong.

My 590 was left untouched in a closet for 15 years. The safety was frozzen in place. After pushing hard it gave way. Also after breaking it down and an hour of showing it some love with some oil and brush everything was was fine. I had it out to shoot a few times and it is doing fine.

Here is mine. I got rid of that plastic stock/forend and put wood on it. Much better feel. No other mods needed!

You'll have to get the mud out of them.


Other than that...they go bang. They feed reliably. They aren't the fanciest and people look down at them but I'd put a quality 500 up against a quality 870 or any other big name pump any day.

For the record mine goes bang every time and serves home defense duties like yours does. The one I once dropped down a hill while small game hunting as a teenager now defends my brother's home without issue.

They aren't fancy but they work and will keep on working. I've never had issues with any of the 500's and Mossbergs I've used.

Slow Down! It is great to get things for you gun but ask the people your buying from what fits, if they do not know go elsewhere. Brownells, midway have tech people who can tell you what fits what.
You stated that you bought a " tri-Rail", Made by who? For what? I have "tri-rails" for AK, AR, saiga, all from different companies none will fit the 500/590.
Do not just buy parts that will sit around, ask the sellers!! I just got rid of stock adapters for Rem 870 after 15 yrs!!!
