Handloader just not paying attention, watching TV or drinking is likely the cause of that.

Lots of pictures of S&W, Ruger and etc. that look like that too. Even in Elmer Keith's books, there are a few blown up guns. (I think he even blew one or two )

I've got a few now.
Haven't had any problem with mine, and wouldn't hesitate to buy more. A 905 stainless with a 3" tube and full length extractor rod would be my idea of the perfect handgun, but they won't sell me a 3" barrel.

The problem with all the new guns from all the makers- they've lost their ever lov'n mind on pricing!

I have 3 Tauruses
PT111 G2 9mm
738 TCP 380acp
M605 357
Never had any problems or issues with any of them.
They aren't S&W or Colt quality, but they are a great value IMO.

Over the years I have owned three different ones. A PT-99 which is a 92 with adjustable sights and a M85. Both were mid eighties build and function perfectly. The M85 has a better trigger than my M36 smith.

I bought a PT111 Millenium shot a box of shells through it and traded it to a Walther PPK/S. Just did not like the way it felt and shot, but no problems with it mechanically.

It's funny you mention that since the trigger in my Taurus M605 has one heck of a smooth trigger. The Taurus design does away with the rebound slide for its own design. They both use coil springs and besides the rebound slide the internals are fairly similar. I assume it's the fact of no friction from the rebound slide means less of a gritty feel in the trigger. Not that it's that hard to polish the contact surfaces of the rebound slide and the frame but that surface gets crud build up again over time. Just thinking out loud I guess as I'm not getting to any more point than that.

Default A friend recommended......

A friend recommended a Taurus similar to the 686 that he was very happy with if I couldn't raise the cash. I stretched and got the S&W and I'm glad. Some people would say that someone that recommends a Taurus to replace a Smith is not a 'friend'.

I think the revolvers are very good. Springs seem to be a bit stiff for many women in the smaller revolvers but very good quality for the money. The PT92 IMO is as good as the Beretta or better. I own both and like my Taurus better than the Beretta. I have had several of the revolvers and like the Smiths, Colts and Ruger better not because they are so superior but because I like the brands. I prefer the Ruger Red-hawk over the Smith, its less expensive and is built like a tiger I tank, I don't think you can really go wrong with a Taurus revolver. The gun snobs and brand loyalists who deny being brand loyalists will say all the reasons you can make up why Taurus is junk, but its BS. Now some of the semi autos are junk. I had a Slim 9 and 40 and both had a lot of problems feeding and extracting, and its just part of the way the gun is designed. The PT92 is one class act. I have read some fools who say fit and finish is not a good, but that is just BS. Save money and buy the revolver in Taurus and you will not be disappointed.

I've owned several Taurus revolvers. Mostly 38/357, but a couple of 22's also. Never had a bit of trouble with them. They weren't as smooth or as pretty as a Smith & Wesson, but put holes in paper just as well.

All of mine were older ones, from the mid 90's back to the late 70's, and I checked each of them out before I bought them, same as I would a Smith & Wesson.

I'd certainly buy another one.

I've had three of their revolvers and no problems with them. They do make guns nobody else does or made in quantities so small you can't find them. I have a Taurus 5 shot snub in .41 mag about the size of an L frame. I like the gun but would have bought a S&W instead if they made one like it. I may have been lucky with the ones I bought or maybe it is because I never had a high round count in any of them. I would buy another if there wasn't a S&W model made like it.

Go to a shop, Look at at one of each. Hold the smith, feel the cylinder and trigger. Look at the fit and finish. Now do the same for the T. Make your own decision. When I did that, smith was FAR better.

This ^^^ is exactly the approach I suggest.

"I had one and had no problems with it" isn't a good enough testimonial for me. I don't want a gun that is measured in "Had no problems". I want a gun that "Feels/looks/shoots great" TO ME, not someone else. It has nothing to do with brand loyalty or snobbery. I'm not interested in a gun that is "good enough, especially for what I paid for it".

Appreciating a Corvette doesn't mean you're thumbing your nose at a Yugo. But to suggest that the Yugo is "just as good" (or better) than the Corvette because you didn't have any problems with the Yugo, or that it cost $40k less, isn't my personal way of justifying my purchase of the lesser-mobile.

I have owned 2 Taurus while they looked good as far as fit and finish went they both has some problems. The PT 1911 45 acp the safety lever broke off while shooting. I sent it back to be repaired it came back fixed but blowing powder back in my face, sent it back they said the fixed it. took it to the range the sear broke, send it back. it camee back fixed, started blowing powder back in my face. I sold it. I well say that the customer service was good and turn around time was fast. I had a 357mag revolver 7 shot 6 in barrel. the trigger was like dragging a file over the head of a nail. the front sight was bent and it shaved lead. It was sent back and I received a new gun. I have talked to people at the range that have had good guns with no problems and have used them to compete in IPDA. this is my 2 cents.

In those areas where licenses to even own handguns, let alone carry, are very difficult to obtain, dealers are reluctant to carry the Taurus brand. This from NYC dealers. The above posters have provided the reasons why.

Taurus makes some very innovative firearms. I know many Taurus owners who are very happy with their weapons. I might consider buying a Taurus for a plinking gun but would not trust my life to one. That is from my own previous experience with them.

I personally do not care for them.

My husband has a Taurus .45 (and an SHO in the driveway, but that's a different story). And he likes it OK but he carries one of my S&Ws.

I think that is all you need to know. Not so much what we think, but that a supposed Taurus fan doesn't carry his own gun he purchased for the purpose of carrying.

My experience over several models has been nearly all bad.
In the '80s, my employer got a security contract from a Brazilian and he insisted we carry Taurus guns. My employer bought 12 Models 92. None worked. Some would keyhole, all had failures to feed, fire and eject. With a couple exceptions they wouldn't shoot an acceptable group. Our armorer took 12 Beretta 92s and adapted the grips from the Taurus guns and the contractee never noticed.

While overseas I was given a Taurus 92C. It had been well broken in and it has run like a freight train ever since. At the time, the Beretta 92C was in high demand and impossible to find. I was offered amounts in excess of what the Beretta cost; I turned them all down.

I was sold a like-new 431, .44-Special. The trigger was so ****** it was not possible to shoot accurately. We tried lightening the spring only to suffer failures to fire. The springs were replaced and the lockwork smoothed by a gunsmith to no avail. We sent it to Taurus twice without satisfactory result. I sold it after telling the buyer what he was getting into. He didn't bring it back.

Our three boys became enthralled by the .22Mag and I felt the S&W options were too much money. They saw the Taurus 941 and nagged me to death. A "famous gun writer" praised the 941. I bought them.
First time on the range our middle son says "Dad, I can't see the rear sight." Huh? That was because it had flown off. Another was keyholing and throwing the bullets all over the target. All three could not be fired more than 18 rounds before they locked up with crud. Gunsmiths, back to Taurus, dumped them.

Then I was given a Model 100, .40S&W, because the owner said he could not get it to hit the broad side of a barn. Sure enough, threw bullets all over. ****** trigger, failures to feed. I sent it back to Taurus, three times. After the 3rd they said it met specs and not to send it again. HOWEVER, I noted the barrel had been replaced and the lockwork looked new. Now it is very accurate and reliable. I'd never trust if for self-defense, however.

Lastly, a friend raved about his Raging Bull. He bought the shortest barrel and loved the bark and bite. I didn't. In any case, just to humor him, I bought one with the 6" barrel at a great price, solely because I thought it looked cool next to his. *sigh* Shoulda known.
The crane locking block and latch were so badly made, and of soft steel, that they don’t always lock and are difficult to unlock. Note to readers: DO NOT FIRE IT IF THE CYLINDER WON'T LOCK UP! If we had been able to tell, we would not have. Surprises are NOT fun. Attempting to dress the block, the gunsmith stopped because the soft steel just melted away. He tried replacing springs with the result that it wouldn't fire or even turn the cylinder.
The cylinder stop pin was bent in a ripple and the spring was so weak it wouldn't raise the bolt reliably. The axle for the cylinder yoke looks as though it was fitted with an ax from 20 feet.
I am not going to bother sending to Taurus. Not worth going to the FedEx office. Maybe I'll weld it up and mount a mailbox on it.

Over the years I've only heard negative things about Taurus.

From one guy at a LGS "Taurus makes good copies of guns. "
Buy the "real thing."
From my uncle "It's a good substitute for a Smith, but it ain't a Smith."
Buy the "real thing."

Personally, I've coveted (ya, ya, I'll go to confession) Smiths for years before I was 21. Now that I can purchase handguns, my fetish for Smiths is only getting worse. They are beautiful guns (I'm talking about revolvers, I don't care much for semis). The triggers are excellent and the firearms are more accurate than me. I never felt any gun company had the beauty and reputation of S&W. Rugers are durable, but not pretty. Taurus is neither.

Long story short, Smiths have a long history of fit and finish. I haven't heard anything about Taurus that would put it in the same ballpark. Needless to say, I won't ever buy one. I love my Smiths. Why would I change?

IMO I wouldn't sacrifice quality for price when it comes to firearms. For small stuff, hunting gear, boots, car parts, etc. maybe. I've done it and learned my lesson. I wouldn't think about taking a chance on a firearm. 2 reasons: I don't want a lemon (a Chrysler Jeep is enough) and I don't want the trouble of trying to repair or sell a lemon. 3rd reason- a firearm is a federally-regulated, potentially deadly device. I'd rather not take that chance.

(Not to sound like a pro-government, gun control hippie. I just believe in function over price, especially when it comes to something potentially deadly)

I shot a Rossi .357, a Taurus product, and the trigger pinched my finger every time in single action. For not much more you could buy a Ruger and get a lot more gun.

I have a model 85 stainless and would put it up against any j frame or ruger. It has worked flawless and has done what it was supposed to do for half the price.

After reading through this thread, it is so much like every similar thread on every other forum. Ruger buyers complain about lack of Q.C. as well as S&W buyers. Everyone loves the brand that they own and will downplay others as not being up to the standards that they demand. The fact is, you can and do get problem guns from any and all manufacturers. Taurus has had problems in the past but they are taking steps to address them and are making strides. During the recent "panic", S&W and Ruger guns have been difficult to obtain at our LGSs and they filled the void with the Taurus guns that they could get. They both have stated that they have been pleasantly surprised with quality of the new Taurus line. I purchased my first Taurus revolver (990,4", 22LR) from one of them. It has the Taurus lifetime warranty plus the Davidson's free replacement warranty. It has been great after countless rounds. Just my $ .02 FWIW.

I have an early 90's taurus m44 4" compensated barrel that I bought off of a mentor of sorts who was an U.S.M.C armorer in the fifties. He tuned the action to where it is as smooth as a Smith and accurate also. It was his carry gun when he worked for the Va. Game Dept. trapping and tagging black bear. This pistol has close to 2000 rounds through it at least. He reloaded, and when I purchased the pistol for $350 it came with a little over 500 rounds loaded up for bear that have since been shot up. And I have never had any problems at all with it. I also have a taurus 617 that has not given me any problems so far, it is fairly new. But what little I have shot it I like it, mostly 38s though.

This is very true...the difference is, when you have a problem with a S&W, Ruger, or Springfield Armory gun, the company will send you a shipping label so you can send it to them at THEIR expense, not yours...and they will usually return it in a short interval.

Taurus does indeed have a lifetime warranty, which also follows the gun, and isn't limited to the original owner, and they have made some improvements on their CS...but from everything I've read, it's still not what most would call good, and Taurus doesn't pay for shipping (after a short initial period.) I just won't buy a new gun from a company that won't pay for shipping it back to them for warranty repairs. After all, when they advertise "repaired at no cost to you" and I have to pay $70 to get the gun to them, I hardly think of that as "at no cost to me."

I have two Taurus revolvers, M431(.44 Spl) & Rageing Hornet.
Both are OK. The 431 is not anyware as good as my M696, but was less
then half the price.
The two 1911's worked great, .45 ACP & 38 super SS.
Hit or miss it looks like to me, I got lucky....

As I already mentioned I've had three of their revolvers with no real problems. Sold off two as I had no need for them and still have a 41 mag snub. If S&W made one like it though I'd replace it too with one.
What I haven't seen mentioned here was the people with limited funds and can't afford spending more for a gun. Surely poor people have a right to defend themselves too and I think Taurus, Rossi and other cheaper priced guns fill that niche. I've advised people in that situation to buy a used S&W or Ruger instead but some insist on buying new and I have then suggested Taurus. One buddy in such a situation has carried a Taurus snubby J frame size for years now with no trouble and yes he does shoot it too.
A pet peeve of mine is the high cost of obtaining a CCW permit out of reach for many poor people that need it most but that's another topic.
Personally I'll be sticking with S&W guns except for models they don't make or are just priced too high for me.

That "short initial period" is a full year from date of purchase. It seems reasonable enough to me to shoot the gun enough in the first year to discover if there is any reason for it to need to go back or not. And not covering the shipping fee's down the road helps keep the price in check. You aren't buying a premium product and they aren't charging you a premium price. Not everyone loads on a Dillon and has a chest full of Snap-On tools. Many of us are low to middle income and pretty much get in where we fit in and Taurus allows for that while still giving you some level of protection.

I recently purchased a Taurus PT-22 on a whim and found it to be 100 % reliable w/every kind of 22LR I had on hand. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least.

My limited experience with Taurus is mostly handguns and wasn't good. Other Taurus I've seen wasn't inspiring either. Not that they are all bad but bad enough that I don't want one. Years ago I would make the local gun show circuit and back then there were more folks walking the aisles wanting to unload (sell/trade) their Taurus products than any other brand of handgun. Things may have improved but I'm not ready to try it.

Taurus has been good to me, but I agree the level of CS and QC is higher with S&W or even Ruger. I inspect before buying, many times have come across Taurus revolvers that shouldn't have left the factory....but THAT said, my present day mod 94 snubby has been a shooter, and the heavy DA has worn in to a decent useable trigger now, so the gun keeps miles off my 1955 era 22/32 Kit Gun. Honestly, it shoot just as well and chronos better velocities too.
I also have a mod 431 in .44sp that demonstrates good accuracy and a fair trigger. I have also owned a few others over the years, a few 85 models, incl the Titanium version a 'Pre judge' 44-410 and a model 66 that took a nice trigger job ( should have kept that one). A few pistols too, a pt 58, pt92c and pt 22.... All worked fine, but went down the road for other guns over the years.
If Taurus could refine its QC, they could be a top notch gunmaker, they make guns people want, just not always as well as they should.

Default Taurus Products

I had a 738 TCP 380. I used it for a couple of years then sold it. Better 380 handguns out there. I have a Taurus 44 Mag. Its a great gun, I got lucky. Shot many wild boar with it. I have owned several Smith 29's and 629's over the years, the Taurus just came along, at the right price and I bought it, about 10 years ago.
I owned a gun shop for over 25 years. Towards the end I topped selling Taurus products because of too many returns, and long turn around times. I suspect things are better now with the new CEO. I have no proof of that though. If you want a 380 look at the new Smith Bodyguard or the Glock 42 in addition to the Taurus!

I have had three Taurus revolvers, ;.357, .38 snub and a .22 snub. The .357 was quite accurate and nice to shoot. The .38 was typical of a snub, but no bad habits. The .22 however was traded off, as was my son's identical gun. The triggers were inoperable by our wive, for whom we purchased the guns. I have a early model 94 three inch .22 that you will not get away from me. The earlier years seem to have much better fit, finish and trigger action. This was made in Brazil in 1992. My very first handgun was a Taurus 24-7 in 40 S&W and I liked it very much, but traded it for the .357 wheel gun in a moment of revolver passion. I think they are like a lot of guns on the market, you can get a poor, average or great one. But like you, I am now a S&W fan for life.

I got this 82 for $200, like new condition. It's easily the equal real world performance and durability-wise of a new S&W Model 10. DA pull is a bit heavy but it goes bang 6 times and makes a good range shooter. After 50 rounds with this my S&W triggers feel like butter

Not bad for 25 yards, good enough for defensive work. If it had a DA pull below 20 lbs it would do better but Taurus revolvers don't always respond well to lighter Wolff springs. Taurus uses heavier springs to mask rough fitting of internal parts. I put light Wolff springs in another 82 and the action was terrible.

One thing I'll give Taurus credit for is eliminating the front ejector rod lockup and going with a crane lock.....so did Ruger so nothing new here but still a step in the right direction.

The next one off the line might have been a pile of garbage.

My first semi auto pistol is a Taurus. The trigger on my PT 24/7 G2 9mm has a very long pull but after about 300-400 rds it's become pretty smooth. Pretty accurate, eats any type of ammo I put though it, and fun to shoot.

A buddy of mine loves his Taurus he is an avid shooteR and has been shooting 125 grain magnum 357 through his for years. Not my cup of tea versus a smith. I bought him a raging bull as a gift I have Beverly shot it he loves that one too. I suppose each to their own

When S&W makes the Taurus DAO Model 445 (medium frame .44 Special) please let me know. I will buy one for each hand. Until then, I'm very pleased with this nifty belly gun.

I own a S&W 5906, a S&W SD9VE, a Taurus PT1911 and my CC is a Bersa 380 Thunder. I am well pleased with all four.

They make cheap guns, because they are cheap quality. I have not had a friend with a Taurus who has NOT had problems with said firearm. With the exception of one friend with a 1911, but he babied it, broke it in, and cleaned it often.

I only buy Taurus security trade ins, I have usually had good luck. The security companies sometimes send back the "rejects" so you have a better chance of getting a decent one.

I have plenty of S&W and Ruger wheelguns but I'm an obsessive accumulator I enjoy owning and shooting all different brands of guns.

I have a 1993 production blue PT92 on layaway, we'll see how that one turns out.

On the other side of the coin I picked up this like new late 70's a Model 80, added the target grips and put 6 rounds through it. It wasn't a bargain at $300 or so. I loaded the cylinder up again after the first 6 and the DA pull locked up, the forcing cone is too tight......

I like the Taurus wheelguns I have but don't think I'll be looking for any more.

With a ton of Brinks and overseas trade in DAO 64-5's and 64-6's on the market there's plenty of options for knock around shooter grade wheelguns for $300.

The old saw applies here. You get what you pay for. Tauruses are cheaper for a good reason: they are not as well built, nor do they perform as well as Smiths, Rugers and Colts when it comes to revolvers. No brand is perfect. However, every time I pick up a Taurus and inspect closely I find that overall quality, fit and finish are second-rate.

I personally would never trust my life to a Taurus firearm.

Can you name any Police Departments or Military(outside perhaps Brazil where they're made) that trusts their lives to them?

Can you name any well respected, reputable firearm experts or instructors or authorities that carries a Taurus and would trust their life to one?

When I called Taurus customer service, they told me not to dry-fire their revolvers because the firing pin could break. That doesn't speak well of the quality of the metal they use. Anytime I've handled a Taurus, they simply look and feel cheaply made.

I'm not a Taurus defender or basher, I think if they're made right you get a functional firearm.

The Amarillo PD has issued 4" Taurus 66 stainless revolvers, I think in the 80's..... why, I don't know but they probably got them nearly free.

Countless security companies have used them and some still do.

Massad Ayoob has praised Taurus snub revolvers in his writings.

The police in Taiwan issue 3" Taurus 85's with Crimson Trace grips.....the grips probably cost more than the guns.

At one time Bangor Punta owned both S&W and Taurus. It was rumored that the Taurus factory was slated to become a "budget " line of S&W and start making S&W branded revolvers but Bangor Punta folded before this could happen.

Say what you will, I just think it's curious that S&W makes 686's in .38 Special for Brazilian export since civilians can't own .357's or auto loaders. Why don't Brazilian civilians want Taurus .38's? Take from that what you will.

I have owned 2 Taurus guns.

First one was a PT-92. It was a nice gun, but the thing was an old-school tank... too heavy for carry. I faulted it for the nickel finish flaking off a bit, so I sold it. Later, I learned that it was MY fault, as you should never clean a gun with Windex. Chalk it up to an uninformed 24 year-old not knowing that ammonia kills nickel.

The second Taurus I owned was a PT-22. Cute little gun, but the bullets would keyhole out of it, and it was very inaccurate overall. I sold it off for a S&W .380 Sigma, at which point after shooting the Sigma, I would have rather kept the Taurus! I didn't purchase another S&W for nearly 20 years!

I have an 82 (medium frame 38 Spl) that has had several thousand trouble-free rounds through it, both wadcutters and hi-vel loads. I did a trigger job on it, which helps both single and double-action firing.

I'd guess there's no structural difference between the medium frame 38 Spl (e.g., Mdls 82) vs their .357 Mag (Mdl 65) , other than chambering the cylinders. Perhaps someone knows otherwise.

I also have a small-frame Mdl 85, which I've not shot as much. So far, though, it's been fine.

Oddly enough, an acquaintance also had a Mdl 85 and the chambering was too short: cartridges stuck just far enough out so as to prevent closing. He gave it back to the dealer, who traded him another new one which worked fine.

What "think ye" of the Taurus brand of (hand) guns? Be nice and try to be objective if you will please. For full disclosure, I own a 738 TCP 380 acp as my EDC. I have a Ruger LCR 357 as my secondary EDC.

I look forward to reading your accurate and objective replies.

So then, what is the appeal of the Taurus brand? They seem to sell a lot of firearms. And the people who love them really love them.

Let me hear back from you please.

Default They were recommended...

They were recommended to me by a friend, who really likes his. I gather from reading that their quality can run from very good to bad. Unfortunately a lot of time has passed since Taurus got started and was connected to Smith and Wesson and the trends in quality aren't clear to me.

My 92 clone would not fire from the day I bought it. There was a bad firing pin spring. Sent it back to the factory had it repaired, sold the weekend I got it back. I Was gifted a few after my father in law passed away sold all three and bought one nice s.w. And a ruger. I know he would want me to have quality more than qty.

Default Taurus Brand Guns

Right now I own two Taurus guns. The first is a SS 44 Mag with a 6 inch bbl. Great gun, that I took in trade. Shot several wild boar with it. The second Taurus I have is a model 62 rifle in 22 cal. It too works fine. I have the same gun in the model 62 Winchester, but its becoming to valuable to shoot. I had the model 63 Taurus and sent it back to them for repair. They could not repair same, and send me a credit for another gun from their product line. They didn't have good luck with their rifle line.
In addition to being on the PD, I owned a small gun shop for 25 years. I stopped selling the Taurus Line because so many of them had to go back to the factory, to repair defects. When you returned them, they went to the back of the list and it could take 6 weeks for the customer to get them back. As a dealer you had to package it up, write a letter, mail it out and pay the shipping and for the insurance, all the time the customer was complaining to you because you initially sold it to him. I finally stopped selling them. That being said a few years ago, a new person took control of the company and he appears to have turned things around. I have not purchased any of their guns since the change in ownership, and I closed my shop and retired. Also retired after 38 years in LE.

I had a 38 spl revolver and I spent some time on the innards with an Arkansas stone and it turned into a real nice piece. Never had any problems with it. Traded it for the Ruger Security Six and its current owner still has it and is happy with it. Like others have said, it wasn't S&W quality but, for the price and a little work, it turned into a nice gun.
