High Quality .22LR rifle
I would like some input from you knowledgeable Gun Guys,
I am looking for a real nice .22 lr rifle So far I like the Anshutz, CZ , and Ruger 77/22. The full stock Mannlicher appeals to me, but it`s not very available , so a standard stock with good wood will be second choice.
What do you think? I know an Anschutz which costs twice as much won`t shoot twice as good, but there is something about that Quality feel that can`t be denied.
So many good guns and so little time left to enjoy them!

For your stated requirement, the CZ is it:
Wonderful old-world craftsmanship and quality.
Mine is the 455 "American", very nice.
That said, Savage makes .22 rifles that are every bit as accurate, just not so pleasing to the eye.

I have the CZ 452 American. I honestly don't know what could make the rifle more perfect than it is. It's quality throughout, more accurate than any rifle I've ever shot, and the wood is gorgeous. I've had it for over ten years, and have yet to find anything to complain about.

I've had Anschutz, Kimber, Ruger, Winchester .22 LR rifles. The 77-22 is an excellent rifle. I've had one since 1985. On a good day it will shoot into one inch at 100 yds. For the money a new 77-22 cost, the CZ line is a better choice. The quality is exceptional and the accuracy is outstanding. I've always liked a Mannlicher stock. On a .22 rifle, it needs to be well done to avoid looking overweight and clubby. Anschutz makes a nice one. Haven't checked lately but CS likely also offers that option. If your interest leans mainly toward field use, any of the above manufacturers produce rifles that will easily meet your needs. If you are more interested in informal target shooting, club matches, etc., CZ has a number of excellent options that will easily do double-duty in the woods and fields. If you are looking more at serious serious competitive shooting, start with Anchutz. It will cost more, but good equipment will take you farther. HTH. Sincerely. brucev.

My son has a Anschutz sporter (do not remember model, but its not a common gun) and its a very nice, accurate rifle.
I have a early model 7722 and its also very nice. It has a 4x Leupold on it and I describe it as a sporter that thinks its a target gun.
I have shot both and to be honest I would have a hard time picking one over the other.

The CZFS is a tough one to beat. I bought mine about 5 years ago and it is the most accurate 22 I've ever had.
Another plus is the feel, workmanship and the wood CZ stocks them with. Even if you happen to get a plain grained piece it is still very nice.

IMHO, pre-war Mauser 22s are a bargin, repeaters are higher in cost. These are mostly "B" models.

I'd go with the CZ. I had a guy TRADE his Anshutz for a CZ. He had a CZ and said it was more accurate. My 452 was superb but I couldn't justify 2 super accurate bolt 22s.

Anschutz is my preference. I've used the CZ's...nice rifles and accurate, but not quite up to the Anschutz IMO.
Check on what the "olympians" use ...... they want & require the very best in accuracy and virtually all use one of the various Anschutz models.
Here's my favorite for squirrels in the fall.

The CZ 452 has its barrel screwed into the receiver and is proven accurate. The 455 barrel is press fitted and held in place with a steel block. I'm curious to know if it equals the 452 in accuracy.

One of my sons has a CZ and it's a very accurate rifle. I have a Ruger M7722 and absolutely love it. So far, I haven't found any other rifle that I would prefer over it.

My Kimber Classic 22 is my favorite while the Ruger 77/22 also shoots comparable groups. Both my 77/22 and 10/22 have Green Mountain match grade barrels that give exceptional accuracy.

I have an Anschutz sporter and it is wonderfully accurate and nice wood. It will shot well inside an inch at 100 yds. That being said, I am impressed with the CZ, in looks as well as functionality and accuracy. But, if you are contemplating any competition, the Anschutz is almost impossible to beat. I used an Anschutz 54 Match rifle in competition for many years, and it has consistently shot into a 1/4" at 100 yds. I just sent this one to my son to use to teach my grandson to shoot. I'll miss that one.

I have a stainless 77/22 that is an absolute tack driver. It has the ugly skeleton stock on it-and wears a Vari X III 1.5x5. I am tempted to buy one of the new Roger stainless 77/22's with the mannlicher stock on it but then I wouldn't know what to do with two 77/22's

At the 50 ft indoor range I have virtually no difference between my 77-22 my CZ and the Anschutz Fortner I used to own. Move out doors at 75 yds and it is the Anschutz and CZ no difference. Since the Anschutz lists for almost $4000 and a CZ is a bit less than $500 the CZ seems to be an incredible bargain.

Well, if you have Anschutz money, you could always consider a Cooper Arms .22:
Like most of the above posters, I think the CZ 452 is the best for the money; Anschutz is hard to beat for history and performance.
Unlike old Mausers, Winchester 52's (or even the fine Browning copy), and Kimber of New York .22's ( a personal favorite), parts and service are in abundance.
These are wonderful times, aren't they?

I tend to like my old winchester model 61 .22 pump. Accurate little squirrel and rabbit shooter for a .22. And lets just not forget how much fun these little pumps are.

I personally lean to the older, American models made by Remington and Winchester. Also, Mossberg has made superb .22s for a very long time, and their models from back in the 50s and 60s are excellent guns. Prices of all these vary, depending on model and condition. Go to 'rimfirecentral.com' and lurk, listen, and learn about all the .22s. There is an untold wealth of information about any make and model you can name.

Coldshooter said an Anschutz listed at $4000. The top of the line is about $2600 and soon to go up but that is a long way from $4000. (On target rifles, sights are extra and can run in excess of $800) I have an older 1903 Anschutz (Nothing like a U.S. M-1903) and I have it set up for 200 yard shooting. It is easy to keep all the shots in 1" and I can usually hit the primer in 12 gauge shells. The Weatherby stocked 64 actions were beautiful and affordable, but you'll have to find one used. Mine will do 1/4 to 3/8 5 shot group at 100 yards with Eley Club Plus (about $8 per box) depending on which lot. I have Kimber of Oregon and my brother has Kimber of America 22's and they both shoot much better than any CZ's I've shot or are on the range with me (that is about 10 or 11 various CZ's). The target Anschutz rifles out shoot the Kimbers! I have seen very mixed results on Ruger 77/22's. One came in on trade and wouldn't hold 2" at 50 yards with any of 8 types/lots of ammo. Where the barrel fit into the action was loose. it was turned down and a round shim fit in place. It then shot 3/8" or better at 50 yards with 3 different ammo types. The previous owner was shocked, when he saw it for sale with a test target! The Government model Kimbers do real good, after they have the bedding adjusted in the fore-end, mine hasn't been done and still shoots 3/4" at 100 yards, a friends has been adjusted and shoots around 1/4". (They came out of the same high school in Pa. Mine was rack #5, his was rack #1 or #2.) I hope all this helps you understand good 22's a little better. Remember; **** for ammo never makes a gun shoot better! Ivan

Just to rock the boat a little more, I'll vote for the Remington 504, nice fit and finish the wood (on mine) is much better then the average rimfire rifle, and it drives tacks at 100yds, with good ammo. That said I have also owned both a CZ and Anschutz, and both performed well. If you can find it, you can shoot a good deal of .22 for the difference in price between the two.

Some one above mentioned the Browning T-bolt. Way back in 1966 I bought a T2 model. Its been my 22 for the last 48 years. I never needed anything else. It hits where its aimed. And its been doing that all along.
One wart came up a while back. The total unavailability of replacement magazines. It didn't worry me much. I haven't worn out my original one yet, and I've still got the single shot adapters, along with 2 spares I bought someplace along the line.
So I was really hopeful when they reintroduced the Tbolt. But this cycle its got a rotary mag kind of like the ugly Rugers.
So if you want a nice looking rifle (wood stock), at least check out the Brownings. They have a great reputation over the last century or so for having the best wood in the industry. Sure, the current ones are made in Japan. But they've got a well deserved reputation for metal working. And someone at Browning has managed to ship them the best walnut they can find. Too many other rifles use wood that looks like it came from an old pallet used to ship toilet paper. That or plastic.

Two of the best sporters I've ever owned were a Remington 541S and if you can find one it will dent your pocketbook some. They are getting scarce and pricey.
The other is a Kimber of Oregon Model 82 again an older classic that is getting pricey if you can find one.
I also like the prewar Mausers like Mick1213 but for iron sight shooting only. The grooved rails were for a diopter rear sight and not a scope so if you mount a scope on them you need to have it so high to clear the bolt you need a giraffe neck. They are very accurate out to 200 yards with iron sights though.

I was refering to the Fortner which is currently listed at Altius for $3195 less rear sight or harness/shooting strap. Add what it takes to go shooting and you are a very few Venti Mochas from $4000.00.

My BIL has a Cooper that is super accurate. If I was younger and wanted a good rifle that is what I would get. I had an Anshultz (1416?) but it wouldn't shoot the first shot. After the first shot it was amazing. Larry

I've got a Cooper 52 Classic, a Weatherby XXII and an Anschutz with a 54 action. The Cooper and the Weatherby are the prettiest, the Anschutz has the best trigger, but at 11 lbs it's best shot from a bench.

I am also on the hunt for a nice 22. Recently found a 77/22 for my dad. He loves it. The trigger wasn't great but he dropped in a Volquartzen trigger kit and it's a tack driver. He likes that it feels like shooting a center fire rifle.
But since the 77/22 rifles are either scarce or over priced I will probably go with a CZ. Considered the T bolt too but I have been told that the triggers are hit and miss and hard to work on. Who knows?

I have a habit for high quality .22 LR sporter/target rifles. Rifles I've owned that didn't make the consistent accuracy cut: Ruger 77/22 always had a high flier, Browning A-Bolt Micro Medallion changed POI as it warmed up, Remington 541T heavy barrel had the dreaded cold barrel disease.
Rifles I still own that make the cut every time: First year of production Marlin 880 SQ "Squirrel Rifle", superb near match rifle accuracy with just about any good standard velocity ammo Bought it used in 1993 for $115. Remington 521 T Junior Special, fantastic at 50 yards, only a stiff trigger keeps it from shooting one hole ten shot groups. CZ-452 Training Rifle- built to a very high standard and the best under $400 rifle out there. One hole at 50 yards with ammo it likes. Marlin 39A Golden, has over 10,000 rounds through it and loves cheap high velocity ammo! Browning T-Bolt with the double helix mag., fast shooting and accurate. Marlin 882 tube fed bolt. $150 used with a scope and it will hang with the 880 SQ and CZ-452.

I do! But it is not a sporter for a sporter I like my Kimber 22 hunter.

I bought 3 T-Bolts last year. The first one is a Maple stock. I guess these are a limited run. Anyhow it is a real looker. I put a leupold scope on it and everyone that sees it says "WOW". My son was drooling on it- he is 14. I told him that one day it would be his. I felt guilty so I bought a slightly used walnut stocked one that he could shoot. The maple is so pretty that I am too scared to hunt with it. The last one that I bought has a composite stock with a spare mag in the butt stock. It is a tackdriver! I love this gun. I put a leupold 4x12 vari-x on it. It is extremely light, really accurate and comfortable to shoot. The mags are really nice on these T-Bolts. They are not bulky like the 10-22's mag. The T-Bolts are very slim. Now I just bought a used CZ452 varmint in 22 lr that I can't wait to shoot. I expect it to be pretty accurate as that is their reputation. I guess if you are going for looks then check out the Maple T-Bolt. It is pretty accurate but not as accurate as my composite stocked one. You have asked a tough question and you are going to get several answers. My vote is for the T-bolt or the CZ. You can't go wrong with either. The CZ will not cost as much as the Browning though.

CZ 455 Varmint & Leupold
Gave 440 tax inc, out the door,NIB. Has a Leupold NIB 12x Target matte with dot, Only 50 rounds thru it so far. Its already shooting under 1/2 inch @ 50 yds, I have a Leupold 6.5x20 EFR ordered(layaway) the 12x is going on a Rem 308, in layaway. I think the CZ is one heck of deal! Regards Ernie

For the money you just can't beat a CZ 453 American! IMHO they are right up there with the Annie's and this may surprise some, but I like it better than the Annie too! One hole 5 shot groups all the time at 100 feet with any bulk promo ammo and they are quality built and beautiful! Love the single set trigger!

The rumors I'm hearing the CZ is the one for a new one.
I enjoy the late 1800's to early 1900's. Single shot, pump action 22 caliber rifles.

WOW So much good info. I guess it`ll come down to what I can find. I am going to be fussy about the wood. I found a very nice Lady-Renae- at Kentucky Gun Co who took the time to photograph a pair of CZ`s FS ,and EM to me, but they were both rather plain, so I`ll pass on them. I felt bad that she went to some trouble and I didn`d buy .
Now I`m excited and really on the hunt! Thanks for All of the great advise . Jack

Anschutz 54
Here's my old Anschutz 54. At 15.5 lbs., a guy really needs a bench. A great rifle for shooting yellow jackets and flies off my 50 yd backyard backstop.

When the Kimbers first came out they were very nicely fitted and finished and looked like mini big game rifles. They also had skeletonized butt plates. My dealer looked at me like I was crazy when I ordered one. Too much money for a .22!
Mine came in a couple of weeks later. Man was I excited. I took it to the range and it was everything I expected. Little sucker shot like a bench rest rifle. I noticed a little hitch in the trigger when shooting offhand. It would take up very lightly and then a slight hesitation before firing. Didn't bother me much when I got used to it.
One day I noticed a very shallow, almost invisible crack in the stock, just behind the wrist. I sent it back to Clackamas. They returned it after about three weeks with a drop dead gorgeous stock. It was chocolate brown with tan and black swirls in the wood and had what looked to be a hand finished satin glow about it. I've never seen an Anschutz or even a Cooper that was it's equal. I had it for a couple years when we fell on hard times and I needed a new transmission for my ride. I sold the Kimber for $1200.00 which was a bunch of money in those days. Took it to our gun club, layed it on a table and let the members fight over it. Everybody talks about the gun they wish they had back. Well, the Kimber is at the top of that list for me. Sorry to bend your eyes for so long.

For the money the CZ's are one hell of a rifle . I've an old Anschutz 1451 sporter the cheapest one they made . It still shoots extremely well . It all comes down to how much you want to spend & what your intended purpose is .

Ooooohh, I saw one of those a couple of years ago in a Ft. Worth show. You could have gotten a nice RM for what they wanted for it.
