Default Held an SA XD-S 4.0 9mm Friday

So my sister stops by on her way back home for a brief visit and shows me her new SA XD-S 4.0 9mm, which is her new carry gun. Nice gun, grips kinda funky due to the texture but what struck me was how heavy it was with the 9 round mag. So this morning I pull my 3954 out of the safe, pop in a loaded 8 round mag. To me, if felt lighter, balanced better and had a better feel.
I personally don't have anything polymer guns, but I really don't see any progress.

Did you know, that a Glock 19 is only 6 oz heavier when comparing both guns with full magazines?

The width of the slide on the XD is less than an 1/8 of an inch than the slide on a Glock 19?

The XD frame is heavier than a Glock 19 frame by 2 oz?

Both the XD and the Glock 19 slides are the same weight.

Not bashing mind you. Just FYI.

A friend that owns a gun shop showed me a new XD 9MM 4.0 so I pulled out my Glock and we compared.

Nothing better to do.

Yep, that's true, but he's talking about the XDs.....It's their itty-bitty gun.......check it out, you might like it. I just got the XDs 3.3 in 45 ACP, and as soon as my holster gets here, it stands a good chance of becoming my EDC..It's only slightly larger than my Kahr CM9. The XDs 4.0 will hide quite easily, and still has a service length sight radius. What's not to like?

Same gun I'm talking about. Again not bashing the XD, but why own one when it's only 6 ounces lighter and the same size with the extended magazine?

Smaller grip yes. But that's it although it may be important to some.

I have both. The XDs is smaller and lighter the G19 When you actually put them side by side and hold them. 6 oz is a lot in a gun. When the SA did the recall then sent a free extended mag

That I do not care for, it detracts from the orginal design of the gun. If you stick that in and try to carry the gun it defeats the original purpose IMO. I trade anyone a new extended for a regular mag. Even asked SA before they sent mine back but they wouldn't.

The XDs is a great gun. I only have one Glock, the 19, Many more XD's I just prefer the grip and feel of the XD (large or small) The Glocks are to bulky for me but of course they are excellent "tools" and Dillons are great also.

They are both good guns. But I'll take the 6 oz and extra 9 or 10 rounds any day.

My first 9mm was an SA XD9 competition, which ironically sold to my sister. I loved the ergonomics, but the trigger, well it sucked.

I like the XD a lot, the XD-m wasn't my flavor, and I was in love with thow the XDs felt except that it was in .45. IMO nothing larger than a .40 should come out of a polymer frame, it's too much force. So when the 9 dropped I was exstatic!! But you're right, it didn't feel as balanced and it even felt different than the .45 XDs. How? I don't know..but it did.

Here lately, I'm leaving the Glocks behind and I'm going with the XD's......Yep, the trigger is a little spongy, but if you are a good shot, you'll adjust to that. Someone who is a good shot is a more accurate shooter with a poor trigger, than a poor shot with a great trigger. I, too, find the grip of the XD much more comfortable than the Glocks. I just like the XD's better, and the price is better, too. My Glocks are really not getting used much anymore. Anybody want to buy some Glocks......

Another recent (relatively) xds owner and ccw. Liked the 45 so much, got a nine for practice (cheaper, less recoil). The main part that appealed to me was the size of the grip, making it extremely easy to conceal. In a hybrid holster it passed the bend over, not catch on the shirt when standing back up test. Am expecting this test to become a standardized test in the future. The 45 xds gots lots of "lift", especially if you put 230 plus p's in it. Only having six rounds doesn't faze me, and two extra 5 rounders are also very easy to conceal. The only pistol alternating with it right now is Taurus 445 in 44 special.

And to me, that could be a very big point. I'm seriously considering looking at the XDs 4.0 to fill the HD role, primarily as my wife's nightstand gun. I've long wondered why every just about every poly framed semi-auto handgun with a barrel over 3-1/4" long had to have a double stack mag, & the grip girth that goes with it. A single stack with a longer barrel would seem to be ideal for someone with smaller hands.

If it works out, I may have to sell my 4" M&P 9MM to fund it, but it's really only a range gun for me & I have a few of them. A well fitting HD gun would be a bigger priority.

There are several single stack guns that won't break the bank.

Kahr CW9
Ruger LC9
Kel-Tec PF9
S&W Shield 9MM

But I would highly recommend a revolver for her.

But how many of those you mentioned have a barrel over 3-1/2" long? I believe Kahr, with the TP9 & T9 @ 4", is about the only one. If you are looking for a poly framed, striker fired 9MM with a barrel of ~4", you'll find very few selections with a single stack mag.

Also, I agree with the revolver & her current nightstand gun is a 3" M60 loaded with 38SPL +P rounds. We've done a couple of training classes together, & she's usually the only revolver on the line.
