Default Made some sheaths for a couple of axes.

I was talking to my neighbor the other day who used to make horse tack before he retired, I made mention of wanting to try my hand at making some sheaths for a couple of axes, so he gave me a large piece of very heavy leather to experiment with. He gave me a few pointers and showed me some of the specialized tools he uses in his work. His garage is overflowing with tools of his trade, from the Durkopp Adler 205 sewing machine to large cast iron belt embossers that look like washing machine ringers. He also has multiple anvils, and a wall full of hand tools that are 3 and 4 deep and a half dozen or more tool boxes full of leather tools stacked on top of each other in the corner. He has hundreds of every snap, rivet, and buckle imaginable in copper brass and chrome, not to mention miles of nylon webbing and huge rolls of leather.

I watched a few knife sheath making vids on youtube and proceeded to lay out patterns and cut up some leather. I kind of had to wing it on some things because just don't have the special tools or hardware for leather work, but I think they turned out OK, not great but good enough for a first effort. I will take them to my neighbor tomorrow and have him rip my work apart, I can't get better if I don't recognize the mistakes.

Now I just need to find a way to buy all my neighbors tools, or at least start hanging out with him and have him give me leather work lessons.

Great work on both the sheaths and new handles! I’ve rehandled more than a few axes and hatchets but only made a couple of sheaths for knives. I have only one tip from experience: don’t leave an axe covered with its sheath near the campfire. One of your hunting partners will take a swing with it not expecting an axe to be wearing a sheath.

Really nice work and excellent safety device. I have seen people cut and equipment damaged by axes stored improperly and unsheathed.

Very nice--ax sheaths are out there to find, but those are as nice as most I've seen. I've ordered a couple that turned out not to fit the ax well.

On a couple of my bigger axes I've made do with heavy hose slit on one side and tied on with starter cord--yours is a much nicer solution!
