Default What do you think of this old Colt (1917)?

It's not pretty, but it's mechanically good. Bright bore and cylinder bores. Locks up tight with no end shake or wobble and the trigger is even not half bad.

It's not mine...here locally.

I certainly don't "need" it...the wife was unimpressed...so it'd be a tough one to pull off right now.

I've spent plenty on firearms over the past year and promised the wifee on slowing down. I suppose the right price would be considered slowing?

It has the typical "U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917" marking on the butt.

Looks OK. About $400-$500, I'd say. Maybe a little more, for your area.

I'm gonna be no help on the "slowing down" front.

I prefer Colt's 1917 over Smith's version. That one has some finish issues but if it is machanically sound and the price was right ($500ish?) I'd be all over it.

Default 1917

you would not mind using it with the finish like it is, I would say buy it and compensate by buying your wife something, like a bus ticket.

In my area nobody pays attention to guns like this. "Old" guns sit on the shelf for months or even years.

You hear stuff like, "is that an older one?"..."where's the new ones?" all the time.

That's cold.

I wouldn't. It has character. Mechanically it's perfect.

It would compensate some for my "too pretty" nickel N frames.

Default 1917

it was just a joke I use on some of the younger guys when I was still working, they would make a comment about getting a new gun but would have to check with the wife, and I would do the bus ticket thing.
I have an almost mint condition 1917 colt, and a s&w 1917 that has a lot of blue wear but shoots well.

I own 1917 revolvers by both S&W and Colt. They are among my favorite shooters. I like using moon clips, and it's cool to shoot a piece of history. The Smith is a more refined, better finished gun. The Colt is a beast. Buy it and enjoy it.

I like it. I'd buy it. You didn't mention asking price?

The finish on the cylinder seems to be different. It could just be the lighting though. I would buy it for the right price and enjoy it at the range. It's a great piece of history.

I have a well used Smith and Wesson 1917, but do not have Colt's version. At a decent price, I'd be all over it.

In the pictures, it sort of looks like someone cold blued the trigger and cylinder.

That's called "character". I'd love to have it and would shoot it proudly.

The trigger and hammer have a like new look to them. The cylinder finish has some light wear on the edges.

The wife gave me one of those saving money talks today (I swear they can read intentions sometimes). With some creative financing I might be able to pull it off.

As for price, it may be possible to get it for an irresistible price. ..

What do I think about it? Well I would say at the right price that only you can determine, it would make a fine addition to a shooter's arsenal!

The price should be right. The coworkers are razzing me for obsessing over an "old piece of junk" as they call it. What fools these youngsters can be.

I'm only 37 years young but have an appreciation for military hardware; especially long lived items like this. Anything that can make it a century and still be tighter and crisper than most new guns should be admired and respected.

I need to start saving for my son's birthday and Christmas, so I'm not sure if I can pull it off right now.

I've been jonesing for an authentic 1917 for some years now, so it'll be hard to pass up. I may have to sacrifice my daily snacks and abandon the diet Mountain Dew for diet Mountain Lightning for a while.
