Default Remington 1911R1 Commander range report

I am not an expert pistol evaluator or gun writer. I can barely type. I didn't take any pictures. The images on Remington's website are better than I could do.

What I can do is offer my opinions and experience with the new Remington 1911R1 Commander.

The overall fit and finish is excellent. The metal surface on the flats is somewhere between polished blue and matte (media tumbled?). It is very pleasing and a nice compromise between a gun meant for the trenches and one meant for display.

Some have complained of a grip safety that has too much play. I didn't notice anything annoying here and the grip safety functioned perfectly.

The checkered WALNUT grips are very, very nice. Enough said here.

The balance and overall weight were just what I was looking for. I find a full size 1911 a bit top heavy. I compared the size of this Commander to my S&W Model 39-2 and they were almost identical save for the mainspring housing contour on the backstraps. My scale is broken or else I would have weighed it. It fits in at least one of the holsters that I normally carry the 39 in. I ordered an El Paso Saddlery Austin style holster for the Remington. It was 20% off for Father's day. Pictures to follow once it arrives. I actually ordered the holster before the gun. Go figure.

This gun points well!! I fired 50 rounds without any failures of any kind. Wow, very thorough test. Winchester brand ammo. At seven yards, offhand standing, I plunked 5 rounds into a group the size of a silver dollar. It patterned about two inches high from point of aim. The sights were easily aligned and very visible in daylight conditions. The barrel bushing appears to be competition grade as the fit, finish and tolerance suggest.

My only complaint is the trigger. It had some creep and the pull was heavy when it finally broke. I don't have a way of measuring the trigger pull but would guess it to be over 5 pounds. A little work from a competent smith would correct this, I am sure.

The price was $625 (with 2 magazines and carrying case). I will be getting a $100 rebate check back from Remington. They have a promotion on 1911s until the end of August, I think. Normally they give ya 2 boxes of .45 ammo but in New York, it's cash. I like that better any way.

This is one heck of a pistol and a great value at $525, or even $625 for that matter. 100% American made.

I have been shooting and collecting guns for 35 years....this is definitely a keeper.

Nice. I'm undecided between it and the Ruger R1911, but I think I'm going with the govt slide.

I have both the Government and Commander versions of the Ruger Sr1911. Very pleased with both.

For anyone considering a basic model R1, I found this deal the other day: Remington 1911 Pistol .45ACP 5-inch 7rd Black Walnut 2 Magazines Online Gun Store

Mil-spec gov't. model on sale for $529. Shipping is $5.99. That's $535 shipped to your FFL. Subtract Remington's current rebate and you're in a brand new 1911 for just a little over $400.

Thing of it is, for another $100 the Ruger R1911 comes with a bunch of desireable upgrades (better sights, BT grip safety, extended thumb safety, more de-horning). To get all that with a Remington you have to step up to the Enhanced model and that runs $900 or more retail.

I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. Of course a modernized model is going to cost more than a plain-Jane GI-type 1911.

I bought a 1911R1 when they first came out, but sold it soon after. I don't care for a series 80 1911, and unless things have changed, Remington only offers a one year warranty.

Ruger has excellent customer support, and the SR1911 is a series 70 configuration. It's a better choice, IMO.

I owned a 1911 R1. It was a good gun for the price, but nothing that stood out in its price range. I sold it upon acquiring my Springfield Armory 1911 TRP.
