New Ruger LCR 9mm

Not sure if this has been posted on the forum yet, Apparently Ruger is now going to offer the LCR in 9mm luger. I am not sure if this is a Davidson or TALO/Lispey edition gun or if it is a regular production gun from Ruger. I am just curious to see why they felt the need to come out with an LCR in 9mm? Not that I don't like 9mm revolvers, I think they are very cool, I just don't think there is a demand for a defensive 9 mm pocket revolver that uses moon clips. I could be wrong, but look what happen to the 940. The 940 was a great gun, but the demand was just not there. Anyone thinking about adding the LCR 9mm to there roster.

( I would also like to know if the 9mm will be made on the aluminum frame like the 38 special version or on the steel frame like the 357 magnum version)

Makes sense to have your bug match your primary, but I'm not sure there is a big market for the 9mm lcr. Time will tell, Ed.

A 9mm revolver is something that interest me and have been looking at converting one of my Smith's to shoot it.

I can see the logic. Most folks generally carry a semi-auto and keeping the calibers consistent between your primary carry and backup makes sense.

9mm ammo is also less expensive than other calibers and has a good selection of SD ammo. Carrying full moon clips for reloads may prove an interesting challenge.

Prefer S&W come out with a 9mm revolver in a K frame with a short barrel and four inch to go along with their 986. That is something I would be very interested in.

I will be buying one. 9mm is cheap, easy to find, dirt cheap to reload, and moon clips are a faster and easier reload than any speed loader and on top of that cost less. I was already thinking of having a new SP101 cut for moon clips and this saves me that cost with a factory option.

Looks to be a regular production gun. I think it was a smart move on Ruger's part. No one right now except Taurus makes a 9mm snub so they'll not be worrying about competing too much for sales.

The 940 was offered at a time when 38 Spl still sold at or below the cost of 9mm. Those days are gone and with the cheaper cost to shoot 9mm, I'm thinking a lot of these will sell.

Moon clips were a kludge to allow revolvers to shoot .45 ACP rounds, back when the Army needed more .45 ACP handguns than Colt could make.

Moon clips are still a kludge. I'll bet that the sales numbers will be a small fraction of their sales in other (rimmed) calibers and that the 9mm LCR will suffer the same fate as most other 9mm revolvers.

Charter Arms also has a 9mm Pitbull revolver that supposedly doesn't require moon clips. Appears they also have one for 40 S&W.

That's actually my objection to this concept. Police in uniform, when they carried revolvers, carried little dump pouches for reloads, or little leather pouches with easily retrievable speed loaders. Alternatively, they used ballistic nylon (I have a number of those with my speed-loaders in them, for convenience, not for carry). When I'm carrying a gun, which is everyday, I carry additional ammunition in my briefcase, there might be some in the console of my car (usually, except I got a different car and can't remember where I put that ammo from the old car, but that's senior moment stuff and not for this Forum! ) or, often enough, no additional ammunition, quite typical for the average CCW holder I should think.

When I carry a pistol I could carry a magazine in a belt pouch; if I can conceal the pistol I can conceal the magazine - but, since I usually carry a wheelgun, well, speed loaders are a whole nuthuh smoke! Maybe it's just me, and if it is then I'm the goat, but there is no way I can carry fat little speed loader pouches on a belt. I wouldn't even think about it for a moment. YMMV.

Half moon and 1/3 moon would work for warmer months and full moons would conceal fine if you have a coat on.

Expect it would be as fast if not faster than a speed strip, but a whole lot of jiggling depending on where you stash them.

I'm gonna check them out. I am trying to consolidate calibers. I don't have the scratch to keep enough ammo for muliple calibers on hand. Now I at least have an option for a revolver bug to share same ammo.

First off a 9MM out of 940 2 inch HB is let’s just say not fun. Don't get me wrong I like the 940 because not everyone has one. As for the extra ammo. A company makes a cup that the moon clip and rounds fit in. They are about $30 each. A cheap way is use a 35MM film canister with lid. works fine. For the ruger I'll look at them. Will I get one? I'll wait until they get the bugs out but yes I will.

Great concept! For someone who doesn't reload, who has a 9mm primary, this would be ideal. Even someone brand new to guns could benefit from the cheap store bought ammo.

In a committed 9 mm firearm this sounds like a good idea. However, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that there may be accuracy issues when converting between . 38 Special (.357) and 9 mm. The nominal bullet diameter of a 9 mm is actually .002" less than a .38. Some think that a 9 mm will not engage the rifling correctly in a .38. I once had a Blackhawk convertible that seemed to confirm this. It was a fun plinker either way though.

I'm a fan of 9mm snubbies, the issue with them, IMO, has never been performance (9mm out of a snubbie outperforms .38spl +P) or moonclips (there's no faster way to reload a revolver). The problem has been weight, until now they've all been porky at 22oz +/-, doesn't matter if it's the 940, the SP101, or the Taurus 905. The new Ruger apparently uses the .357mag LCR frame and comes in just over 17oz. That's a substantial weight savings but still heavy for a pocket or ankle gun.

About 6 years ago I bought a new 360J when they came out and had Pinnacle rechamber it to 9x23. I usually load it with 9mm ammo and have carried it almost every day since I got it, including as a BUG when on duty. That gun only weighs about 13oz, is a pleasure to carry, and has never failed to perform. that being said, I will be seriously considering purchasing one of these new Rugers just to have it, especially if it is 940 moonclip compatible since I have a mess of them.

People make way too much of that .002" difference in bore diameter. In my experience it is meaningless in real world accuracy. I have experienced no measurable loss of accuracy with my 360J with 9mm compared to shooting .38spl out of the same gun. I have qualified with this gun numerous times on Maine's duty pistol course of fire (3-25yds) and used it to win an IDPA BUG match. There are several folks here on the forum that have had other revolvers rechambered to 9x23 for fun and competition and have had similar results.

In my pocket as always. After all, a moonclip full of 9mm is waay less bulky than a HKS full of .38SP.

There is one good use for a 9mm revolver. It can be used to fire any underpowered 9mm ammo that you might have laying around that will not work the slide on your Glock, or other auto pistol.

When I owned my 442 Pro I used moon clips, but put them upside down
into each other to hold more solid . With the HKS 38 ,there is the "star"
to hold the 38 rnds strait, but nothing for 9mm/40/45acp rev rnds.

"Kludge" What a GREAT word!!!
Oh and I agree. I think any rimless revolver should use the same principle as was used in the 547.
