Default Savage 410er's

I picked up a pair of Savage 410er chamber adapters for 20 gauge. They accept both 2 3/4" & 3" length shells. If inserted into the shotgun properly they have sliding ejection tabs that cause the shot hulls to be extracted or ejected in the normal way for the shotgun they are being used in. This set is 8 to 10 inches in length, unlike the Briley full length tubes at $400-700 a set or the discontinued Browning adapters that are chamber length at $40-$60 a pair. I have both lengths of shells and am interested to know how how other people have found them to pattern. Before you ask, I still live in the 20th century and don't post pictures. These need new O-rings and a little gun grease. I paid $40, and I figure that saves me from not buying a nice double in 410. Thanks for your comments. Ivan

Hi, Ivan. I've had a set for 12 gauge for about thirty years. They group pretty good but not quite as well as the shell that the gun is chambered for. The inserts are great for starting kids off on a shotgun. I haven't shot mine in years as all my 12 gauges are side shuckers now.

That's nice to know. I have an O/U 410 already and am aware of the low shot count. I have 2 O/U and 2 SxS, 20 gauges. When I get a chance I plan on shooting some Sporting clays. Mostly I was wondering if the shot is in a long string like other 410's or if it is in a round cloud like the bigger gauges?

I was looking at them again this morning and see they are marked 412F and they are 12" long. Thanks. Ivan

I have found that they will break anything on the skeet field. I haven't ever used them for sporting clays but I have tried sporting clays with a real 410 and also a gun with with full length 410 tubes and both give embarrassing scores. Larry

I have a stainless steel adapter marked " MADE IN SPAIN" , CAL. 12, 410-3. It is 10 inches long overall. I have a 12 gauge double barrel that I have shot 3 inch .410's in. Patterns like an open choked .410, good for up close or shooting something that doesn't require a 12 ga. blast. Good trainer also and maybe in a survival situation. About the only things I have used it on were tin cans and it killed them stone cold dead.
Take it to the range and see what it will do ...just might surprise us all.

For me, it doesn't matter what gauge, choke or what is the target; I get embarassing scores every time I pick up a shotgun, which isn't very often. Probably that's the problem.

I used to have a pair of 410'ers for 12ga. I used them quite a lot in different SxS's and some break-open singles. They always gave good service w/o any problems for me and I was able to break targets OK on the skeet range with them w/o much problem.
I traded them away when I got back into Winchester 42's. Kind of wish I still had them sometimes. I seem to remember that I shot pretty good with an Ithaca 12ga NID Field Grade w/ 410ers. Oh well,, as long as I look good doing it,,,,
S/Cs w/a 410??,,I might as well save the shells and just yell 'Bang!".

IIRC the earlier mfg 410'rs were steel. The later mfg were all alloy construction.
The steel units added some noticable difference in weight & balance to your gun,,but they're just supposed to be for kicks and giggles anyway.

$40 is a good price for even a single tube now from what I've seen lately. If you got a pair for that,,a really great price. The O ring is a simple replacement. Keep a touch of grease on them for ease of insertion and removal. Clean out the bbl before pushing the unit in place helps too.

2152hq; Thanks for the input. I have shot sporting clays for about 20 years (had stroke 2 1/2 ago) and just am getting back into the game again. I have a Citori XS 30" 410 and same in 28. When I was getting high 30's low 40's w/12 ga, I averaged about 4 birds less with a 28 and only 3 birds less with a 410, 20 gauge gave about 1/2 a bird better than 12 (gun fit I think). Coming off a 2 year "dry spell", I shot a little last spring and got all around 27 with a 12 sxs. I pretty much have always stunk at skeet and average around 17 all gauges. I've never taken it seriously and use it as a warm up for SC. I seem to shoot guns best when they are new to me, which means I get distracted too easily... look squirrel... and just have too much fun. I'll be happy to average 50% overall when I get back in the swing. 410 and 28 let me shoot alot cheaply since I reload! Ivan
