Default Merwin & Hulbert

Does anyone out there know for sure if M&H barrels are interchangeable within a given model? Like do all model 3 frontier army barrels fit all model 3 frontier army frames? I'm thinking this may qualify as a dumb question but I'm asking it anyway.

Hello Bob.
I'm pretty sure that nothing about Merwins is for sure.
I do know that early models in 44MH caliber (and probably 44 russian) have a shorter cylinder (and frame) than the 44winchester models. I would expect that these would not be interchangeable.

Thank you for the reply. My M&H is chambered for 44-40 and the barrel that is coming in the mail is also 44-40. I'm sure hoping they will fit each other.

Howdy

I own a pair of Merwins. Never before tried interchanging their barrels. So I just went downstairs and tried. No soap. The wrong barrel absolutely will not fit on the wrong frame, at least not with my pair.

Now, I must hasten to add, one was originally chambered for 44-40 and the other for 44 Russian. Both now sport custom made cylinders chambered for 44 Russian. Before I read the above post I did not realize the 44 Russian cylinder was shorter, and sure enough it is, by about 1/8". So that probably accounts for why my barrels do not interchange.

I wish you the best of luck and hope your new barrel fits. However, I would not be surprised if some fitting was required.

Please report back on your results.

What an awesome pair.
When I first married I was offered 3 of the short barreled round butted I think they were called skull crusher grips in .44WCF. Two nickel and one blue for 100ea. Bride pitched a fit and I let them pass. Regretted it every time I see an M H. I learned to buy first and ask for forgiveness later.

I would think that the interchanging of Merwin & Hulbert parts would be problematic because of the fine workmanship and custom fit that was obtained with each firearm at the time of production. If you have handled an original Merwin & Hulbert before, you will know what I mean.

I just bought a spare longer barrel for my Merwin Hulbert the other day. Haven't received it yet. It is a 7 shot .32 so I'm hoping if it doesn't fit I can fit it somehow.
Incidentally its not Merwin & Hulbert. No "&" in between the two names.
Sorry just a peeve of mine.

I handled one at the shop a few days ago, it was a .38 (S&W...?). Very neat revolver.
