My grandpa gave me an Eclipse double barreled shotgun back in the 50's. I wonder if there is any connection with your hatchet?

Mauser Bayonet Model 1871/84. Manufacturer should be "Alex. Coppel" over Solingen on blade.

A quick look at Google suggests that Eclipse was a Montgomery Wards brand name. It would come as no surprise if other Wards products got the same tag.

Eclipse was a brand name used by Montgomery Ward and likely made by
Plumb. I think it's more small axe than hatchet. Probably 100 years old maybe 110.

If it's a Plumb it's well worth rehafting. It's in great shape with no signs of oversharpening and the old Plumbs are high quality. Fixed up it'd be twice the tool of the trendy Swedish axes costing three figures. Looks like it was used as a hammer more than an ax.
I also agree with Comrad about the size. Hard to say without knowing the actual size of it but compared to the bayonet it looks like it could well be a boy's ax which would go nicely on a 26-28" handle.
I'd love to find one like that!

As Comrad said, that's an axe.
Hatchets have a hammer head on the back, and quite often a notch to be used for pulling nails. They also have a straight edge. They are carpentry tools. Axes have a curved edge, so they won't stick in the tree. The back of an axe is simply there for weight - balance. You are not supposed to hit anything with the back of an axe, although many people do.
Does not matter if it is a "full-size" axe, a "three-quarter" or "boy's" axe, or a "belt" or "hand" axe. It's an axe.

I have what I refer to as a Hand Ax,,I got this from my Dad close to 40 years ago..It was well used when I got it..
It is a plumb brand, has the nail puller notch..The handle is 18" long..
Yes I have hit the back end of the hand ax and used as a splitting wedge..i need to deburr the portion that I hit upon..The burr's will fragment and cause injury..
The hand ax keeps a very good cutting edge...
