Colt Combat Commander
I have an acquaintance who is offering me a stainless Combat Commander that is in superb shape. I don't know anything about them but noted it is not labeled Series 70 or 80, just Colt Commander Model on left side with caliber spelled out and Colt Combat Commander on the right side. I think it is brushed stainless. He needs cash and has offered it to me for $725. I am pretty sure that is a fair price but wanted to check here. Thanks.

If it is in good shape $725 is a good price. Are the sights stainless also or are they black?
I would probably take it myself.

They are black Novak night sights. I don't know of they came original or not (not a Colt aficionado).

There were never any Series 70 labeled Combat Commanders...wasn't such a thing. However there were Series 80 labeled Commanders. (I think)
Confusing ain't it?

The commander size 1911 is sweet. Buy it you won't regret it. That is a good price.

What caliber is it? There is indeed no "series" rollmarked on the slide.
$725 OTD is not a bad price for superb condition.

If you want to know an approximate manufacture date you can find it at:
Colt 1911 .45 ACP Production Statistics and Serial Numbers
I would be curious to know when it dates from.

Better price than what I see here for them in that condition. I think your decision wise to purchase and you'll be able to get back your money if you decide you don't like it.
I was late to the 1911s myself but have come to love them almost as much as my S&W revolvers.
I shot a buddy's Commander a few years ago and although his had a gritty trigger I knew I had to get one that size. Since all the Colts here were sky high I bought a Ruger of that size. A Commander is still on my list though.

The Commander size (4.25" barrel) was first introduced in 1949. The "Commander" name denotes an alloy frame while "Combat Commander" denotes a steel frame.
The Combat Commander weighs 32 oz. and may be the best size 1911 for concealed carry. The Combat Commander again produced in the Series 80 models and a M1991A1 model reintroduced in 2004.
Stainless steel models would have been produced in the Series 80 models and the XSE Series models. The price your friend is asking is, in my opinion, a bargain.
The Combat Commanders are great handguns!

FPrice:
There was a couple of days delay on the acquisition and then I left for a week long hunt. Should be able to post pics later this week.
As an aside, the horns in the upper part of the Texas hill country are superb this year.
