I picked up a P-64 a couple years ago. They were running about $175 (at Gander Mountain, no less).
I'm now looking at picking up a Feg PA-63 and P84 Wanad.
They're good little guns.

I have all three and they are all reliable. I use to CCW the P64 as it's a nice size for pocket carry.

I'm not a reloader, so I'm very far removed from being any sort of expert, but...I am aware of the general dimensions of these cartridges.

The 9 X 18mm Makarov cartridge has a bullet diameter of 9.27mm (.365 in.) and a case neck diameter of 9.91 mm (0.390 in), while the 9mm Luger/Parabellum/NATO cartridge has a bullet diameter of 9.01 mm (0.355 in) and a case neck diameter of 9.65 mm (0.380 in). There are further differences found at the rim of both cartridges. Again, I'm not an expert in this area, so I don't know how much difficulty these variations would cause. My point is that there is more difference between them than purely 1mm difference in the case length, and I'd advise caution against merely trimming 1mm from a 9mm Luger case, loading it up, and sending it through a 9x18mm pistol.

Aside from that...I too am a great fan of the 9x18mm Makarov cartridge...or more precisely, I'm a great fan of some of the pistols that are chambered for it.

Some years ago, IIRC, I believe that J&G Sales was selling the P-64s for around $160 or so (maybe it was closer to $175, as mentioned by RobzGuns, I forget now), so I picked up a handful of them. They looked brand new, and are excellent little pistols. I also have a half-dozen of the EG/Bulgy/Chinese Makarovs, and a sprinkling of CZ-82s, and a lone PA-63. They're all excellent pistols, with the PA-63 being the "worst" of the bunch, IMO...but still a decent enough light-weight little gun.Luckily, I picked up multiple cases of ammo back when it was going for $7-$8 a box, so I'm well set there.

I thoroughly enjoy all of my Eastern Bloc pistols. Great fun, and very usable guns.

Tim

I like my cz 82 in 9mm makarov. These were in very good condition for $189. Then the unissued cz82 was offered for $199. These were brand new. The cz83 was offered in 9mm mak brand new for $230.

There is/was new Russian bear brand, wolf brand ammo, and sellers & bellot, privi partizan ammo. Not anymore surplus due to the sales of the mak pistols.

I owned one back when they were $160, along with 2 Makarov's. Not bad but not my cup of tea. Luckily someone is always looking to buy one

@gnagle want is the middle pistol maybe cz-82?

That Makarovdotcom subforum at Gunboards has some good data - I used to really hit Gunboards a lot back when it was Tuco's Mosin-Nagantdotnet. Hey, just wanted to post this to encourage you:

I had a few Makarovs but being a PPK fan never really loved them, too crudely made and bulky in comparison.
The P-64 is the exception to the Mak rule and actually closer to the PPK than the Mak IMO .... really its neither....Its a P-64.

The plus side of the P-64 are high fit and finish (In typical Polish made gun fashion) they are bit bulkier than the PPK but IIRC my P-64 was like $125 OTD.
The down side is the HEAVY factory trigger spring ,
Once swapped out with WOLF replacement springs its like butter.

If your on a budget and want a DA semi auto thats closer to 9mm than .380 the P-64 shines.

I bought Starline brass (direct from Starline) and Berrys plated bullets for my P-64. I did the Wolf springs and polished the internals.
Great carry piece (but a bit heavy for pocket).

Remember than 9mm Parabellum is a tapered case. Trimming off 1 mm and losing the taper gets you right where you need to be for the Mak round and works very well......But using 9X18 Mak brass is easier and it IS available

If you don't own any surplus guns remove the blinders and get some.
The old war horses(rifles) are a hoot to shoot. The handguns and rifles may surprise you.

I've made up 3-4 hundred rounds using 9mm brass. Pretty simple actually. Trim 1mm off (.03937----.040LOL) Bell the neck-size to 9mm mak-re bell the neck and your ready to load. You have to bell before sizing to get rid of the tapered 9mm para case. I use these in my p64 and my cz82. The cz 82 will shoot cast bullets but I limit them to 50-75rds because of the polygonal (sp) rifling. The p64 will shoot my cast load all day until the web of my hand gets sore! EXCELLENT little pistols BTW

Funny you should say to expland before trimming I called earlier today to Lee Precision the expert said the opposite but I believe you he also said that the extractor might be a issue due to the gap so I plan to make a few dummie loads to find out for my self what works for me

Another question I found some CZ-82 from wideners but the had problems ejecting mags but their gone thats a bad time for a carry piece to have
