Default Sig P938

OK, everytime I say I'm not buying or needing another gun, something pops up on my radar.
Who has a 938, which model, and what are your impressions. I'm a 1911 fan.

I've got the Equinox model. It has a tru-glow front site; I don't usually like FO front sites, but I like this one with the tritium insert.

This 938's weight is barely noticeable when holstered, easy to shoot out to 25 yards and the recoil is much lighter than I expected. I like mine.

I have the smaller version the p238.....it is a typical Sig, well made, very functional, easy to shoot.....and it is a itty bitty 1911 that gets lost in my Levi's front pockets. What's not to like? I can imagine that the 9mm version is a bit bigger (and has ambi safety).

If you get one and like it, let me know...I may have to ditch the 380 for the 9mm

My wife and I each have a Extreme. We like them a lot and use them for EDC. The springs (recoil and mag) are a bit stiff, but they will get better with use. I did have Robert Burke, the Sig Armorer, do trigger jobs on both. After his work we have ~4# crisp triggers where before we had ~8# rough triggers. Worth every penny and I can't say anything but good things about Robert.

My P938 Nightmare is my main carry, with the extended mag. I'll use the flush mag if I'm pocket carrying, otherwise it's the extended.

Out of the box mine has been perfect. It's the only gun I have that I haven't touched the trigger in anyway. Nice and crisp, not too heavy, and not too light for a carry gun.

It shoots great... Accurate with very manageable recoil.

The operation is simple. Easy to work the slide, magazines seat easily without any smacking. The safety locks in place securely yet is simple to disengage.

The front of the grip on my model is a very aggressive checkering type pattern. It really digs in providing extra traction.

All in all, I love it. It's become the second handgun I can't see myself parting with.

Even my wife, who isn't big into shooting, was so impressed she wanted a .380 P238 (which we have yet to take out... hopefully tomorrow).

There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I spent a couple months getting my hands on all the different small, easy to conceal, 9mm semi auto pistols. I took any opportunity I could get to shoot as many of them as I could. I chose a Sig P938 AG.

Positives:
  • Easy to conceal.
  • Single action trigger
  • Safety that is just right. It takes a deliberate but not hard flick of the thumb to engage and disengage.
  • Checkered aluminum grip panels are very grippy.
  • Magazine release is checkered.
  • Slide release / Slide stop is textured for grip
  • Usable 3-dot metal Siglite Night Sights
  • Slide can be racked while the safety is on.

Negatives:
  • Plastic serrated trigger. Of all the things Sig cheaped out on...
  • Stout recoil spring can make reassembly challenging for some.
  • Out of the box, the trigger feels gritty.
  • Issued with just one magazine.
  • 6 round single stack mag costs as much or more than full size P226 mags.

While obviously inspired by the 1911, the trigger is not 1911. The trigger pivots. Out of the box, the trigger feels gritty. For the amount of money I paid, the plastic serrated trigger is annoying. I picked up an aluminum skeletonized trigger, but lost my nerve while attempting to install it. The trigger hinge pin is domed. Driving it out with anything other than a cupped pin punch and you will scratch the snot out of the frame. Even with a cupped pin punch, I couldn't stomach the increasingly heavy hammer blows. The pin wouldn't budge. I decided to stop.

Sounds bad so far, but it's not.

The trigger smoothed itself out over 200 rounds making it feel lighter than it actually is. Because the slide can be racked with the safety engaged, I can safely chamber and extract a round.
Chamber: Magazine out. Rack slide. Engage safety. Insert mag. Rack slide to chamber round. Eject mag. Top off mag. Insert full mag.

Clear chamber: Make sure safety is engaged. Eject mag. Rack slide. Eject round.
The Siglite night sights are the best sights on this class of small pistol. They are easy to pick up. I'm able to shoot with both eyes open. The grip angle is perfect for a small pistol. Surprisingly, perceived recoil is less stout from this small pistol than you would expect.

In my hands, the 938 is capable of good groups. Used more realistically faster pace fire, it is center of mass accurate all day long. This target was out at 35 feet. Two mags slow fire. Four mags fast fire. In my hands, the P938 shoots best with 124gr ammunition. My 938 hasn't had any issues cycling hollow point ammo.

Mine came with an OWB polymer Sig holster. It's not great, but it's not bad either. Now that it's colder out and I'm wearing baggier clothes, I've used it a few times. I purchased during the last Sig promotion: 2 mags + a range case via mail in rebate.

This is the only single stack 9mm pistol I will own. I don't enjoy shooting small pistols. The 938 is the exception.

Been on my radar a while too. And they have so many different configurations to choose from... they've just about got everybody covered. Got a buddy who recently pulled the trigger on one, definitely gonna have to invite myself over and happen to have a box of 9mm with me!

I have the P938 and the P238. The 938 is the Blackwood edition. I usually carry the 938 in a pocket holster, but occasionally in a Galco outside the waistband holster. Good shooting gun, but as mentioned, the magazines aren't cheap.

Got nothing to add from USAF385, JaPes and labworm's comments-all well said and heartily agree.

Especially about the difficult recoil spring reassembly. Here's some pointers on that score I borrowed from a Sig forum:

"I use the plastic starter piece from a Walther P22 to get it started. It's basicly a 3/16 dowel about 2" long.

Put the spring on the guide rod and lay it in the slide. Put the dowel thru the muzzle end of the slide and recoil spring. Then when you push the guide rod into place the dowel keeps the spring from kinking up.

With a little practice it will go on easily.

I have used the orange chamber flag that came with the pistol as a guide. Just needed to remove the flashing from the pin end."

Anyway, here's mine in its natural state along with the newly acquired .22LR slide(target conversion kit):

The wife carries an SAS with tan rubber grips and extended mag. Mine is a BG with extended mag. Installed stainless triggers and mustang reduced power hammer springs, polished internals and ended up with smooth, 5 lb triggers. Carry mine iwb with an alien holster. 100% fiction and reliability with factory and reloads. We find it to be the perfect cch.

I have the Sig P938 Sport. I picked it up for $535 and its the perfect carry for me. I've put about 500 rounds through it with zero problems. The sport has some nice night sights and performs flawlessly. It is now my number 1 carry wherever I go. I've snapped a few pics next to my other carry pieces just to compare the size.
