I have come across a Winchester Police in stainless. I have heard that these are collectible. What are they selling for, and are they rare/collectible?

Should you come across one marked Austin PD or APD...let me know.

APD hangs on to theirs and doesn't turned them over like their handguns.

Not on purpose but they make great bargain general purpose shotguns. I have had a few 870 police magnums that cost me between $180 - $200. I sometimes use them as trade fodder

This is just my opinion, okay? I'm assuming you're talking about the Winchester 1200? I think they're a bit collectible if they're marked to a particular police department. I've seen a couple go for around $600-$700, if I remember correctly. But to me, if it's just marked as a Winchester 1200 Police, it has no collector's value for me. It's just another Winchester 12-gauge pump far as I'm concerned.

But the really collectible police shotguns are the pre-'64 Winchester Model 12 factory riot guns with cylinder bore barrels. Also the Winchester Model 97 factory riot guns with police markings are eminently collectible.

Several months ago, a Model 97 from the Amarillo Police Department sold for something like $1700-$2000 on Gun Broker...I can't remember the actual price. But it had been marked with what was probably some sort of electric engraving tool, and it was done pretty well, considering. I stopped bidding on it when it hit $1500. And I saw one '97 at a gun show back in March...it had the name of some jail or police department on it looked like it'd been scratched on the receiver with a nail. It sold for $1000.

But to me, those old M12s and M97s with police, prison, or security firm markings are the ones to go after. You buy them and you won't lose money if you ever sell them.

I do not know how rare they are. I have had one forever. Bought it new and I do not think I have ever fired it. I can not recall when it was out of the gun cabinet last.

BTW, the STAINLESS Winchester is nickel plated.

I have one that came with rifle sights on the barrel. That one was passed down to me by my dad, it was my grandfathers boat gun (repel boarders). That one isn't ever going anywhere. I remember seeing it as a young man, and wanting one just like it.

A few weeks ago, I was at the LGS to pick up some new acquisitions that had to be shipped in and there was this matte stainless beauty leaning ever so casually in the used shotgun rack. The price was very fair. As I was checking out, a gentleman stopped at the counter and asked me what I know about the 1200. I did not have a lot to offer, so he filled me in...kind of....He was telling me that these Winchester 1200 Stainless Police models are few and far between and that I had found a treasure. I am conflicted between stuffing it behind the seat of my old truck or letting a collector have it. It barely looks to have been handled, much less fired. I would almost bet that someone bought it back in the 80's and set it in a closet and never touched it until they LGS bought it from them. I opened the action and there was a huge dust bunny staring my in the face! I will be getting it cleaned up and see what I want to do with it.

There are 2 on gunbroker right now. The 1200 was never an expensive firearm. The "police" marking was just for show. While that may have been an intended market, they were sold primarily to citizens.

There are 3 that I found, and only one that is close is in Jack Nasty's add. Mine is far cleaner (despite his really awful photos), and the wood is flawless. I would guess that any of these would be marked up pretty well if they served in the PD.
