That's a right nice looking shootin iron ya have there partner! I love the looks of the Dragoon style trigger guard but it smacks my knuckles something fierce. My only Super is the 5 1/2 incher with the round trigger guard and fluted cylinder with Ajax stags, most accurate .44 Mag I have.

Looks pretty nice. I put rubber grips on mine after working up hot loads for hunting. I've taken a few deer with it too.

I had a New mod. single six 34 years ago and sold it. I ws a darn good shot with that gun too! I still kick myself. I loved that S/A Ruger! But I have a SS Ruger Super BlackHawk "Lipsey's Exclusive Bisley 0818 3.75" 44 Mag" on the way. I hope to ge it next week sometime. I'll post some pictues when it get's here. For the past 34 years i have been a Colt 1911, S&W Gen3, kinda guy. I feel like a kid at X Mass again. I always loved the Feel and looks of the S/A Rugers and boy can they shoot! Can't wait till it get's here! George

I bought a Ruger Superblackhawk in 75.....I still own it and shot a huge Hoosier corn fed buck with it last week.....When I bought the 7.5" 44 mag I was living in S. Cal. and started shooting handgun metallic sil in the standing production class....I moved to Az. in the 80's and continued to compete with the revolver shooting my load of a Hornady 240 gr. JHP over 20 gr of 2400....we shot at 50, 100, 150 and 200 yds....at 200 yds the target was a 55lb steel ram....you had to knock the ram over to score..."ringing it" did not count..on a good day I ran 70-80% on the rams..This 44 mag taught me more about the 44 mag, the capabilties of a man portable stock out of the box revolver at long range than any other big bore revolver I own.
This revolver along with my 8 3/8" 29 have accounted for over 3 dozen deer during the past several decades along with several dozen hogs down in Texas....still shoot the same recipe I shot steel with, except I run a home cast Lyman 429421 SWC.
I am by far a S&W revolver guy, but this Ruger has served me well and continues to do so, as a certain big whitetail buck found out last week.

Here is my 5.5" Ruger Super Black Hawk.

Ruger puts the rounded back trigger guard on the 5.5" and the square guard on other barrel lengths.

Also, the 5.5" has a fluted cylinder.

The grip is very nice to look at, and OK when shooting 44 special, but with 44 magnum my fingers get wacked by the trigger guard and bottom of the gun frame. I have a set of Hogues that cure this problem, but don't look nearly so nice.

I have a 44 in 4 5/8 looks great and even with a trigger job it's not a Smith.

My 74' Super BlackHawk in 44 mag with the 7 1/2" barrel.

Always had a soft spot for Ruger .44 revolvers. Here area few of my favorites. For some weird reason, the square back Dragoon style grip works for me.

Well this is going to be a new for me! Shooting a .44 Mag that is. I learned to shoot when I was 22 and my first gun was a Mod.19 Combat Masterpiece. I learn with .357 full house loads. I never really got use to the recoil Back then.. I could shoot is fine after learning and I think it helped me in the end not to predict recoil or flinch so all and all it was a good learning gun for me. So that's the heaviest recoiling gun I ever shot to date as far as a hand gun goes. I like 1911's in .45 I have no issue at all with it's recoil I think it not as snappy and slower.. I wonder how I'm going to like the Super in .44mag.. This is going to be interesting! I may need some help and pointers with shooting it.. George

If it has the squared back trigger guard I strongly recommend a set of Pachmayrs for it....I never shot my Ruger with those factory grips....second:I recommend plugs and muffs to protect your hearing ( and to avoid anticipating the recoil and flinching )because there is a lot of decibel onslaught and muzzle blast....third: use a good firm grip on the revolver, but do not try and "muscle" the recoil....with full throttle loads it is going to recoil - let it -but maintain control of the revolver....there is a lot of kinetic energy being sent down range in that projectile...and Newtons law of "equal and opposite" forces will most definitely apply....enjoy your 44mag....I most certainly have mine.

Nope it does not have the Squared trigger guard. I did read about that trigger guard and grip being a knuckle buster. It's this gun.

That will make you a NICE 44 mag.....as noted above in my first post I have been shooting the 44 mag since the 70's and have 44 mag revolvers with bl's from 2.5 to 8 3/8"....Even with the rounded trigger guard I would opt for the pach grips or a bigger wooden grip set if I was shooting full power magnums.....I have several blackhawks and have installed larger wooden grips on them as well....I have big hands...so the little plow grip panel that Ruger sends with the gun is useless to me......some shooters like the "plow handle grips"...but I do not want the grip shifting in my hand after every shot...just my preference....that shorter bl is only going to increase your muzzle blast & flash / recoil & torque....but you will have to see what works best for you....enjoy your new 44 mag and good shooting.

George9 - The bisley grip profile handles recoil well for most people. It is not known as a knuckle buster. Aftermarket rubber / oversized wood stocks are hard to find in that profile, though are probably available.

Like other have said, a firm, steady grip, smooth trigger pull, and let the gun recoil rather than fight it. Good hearing protection, as muzzle blast is a big part of perceived recoil, especially in a short barrel. 44spl., or equivalent reloads are excellent for range use.

Larry, Thanks!! Yep learned on a mod.19 357 years ago with full house loads and no ear plugs... Was my first gun.. That's one thing I like about a .44 mag they have a lot of loads and I should find something I like.. Not to worried about the recoil. Not yet anyway! I shoot a lot od .45 out of a 1911
3 1/2" barrel and full size guns and I have 0 issues with recoil where some will not even shoot the gun do to it's heavy recoil whne I ask down that the range.. I just never felt that way about the .45 acp. So I'll just have to see how I feel about the .44 when it gets here.. but I think I'm going to like it! A lot! It's not on the move yet no tracking number.. Not so sure it's going to make it here this week.. Hey I wish you and yours a happy Thanksgiving Day! George

There's plenty to like about the Ruger Super Blackhawk. I really like the way it recoils when firing with one hand, it rolls back and then up. The new flat tops are even nicer I think.

I moved the stag grips from my .357 mag Blackhawk to my 3 3/4" .44 mag Super Blackhawk because they give me better control when shooting hot loads. I got my first ($75) Ruger .44 mag back in 1966 because the S&W .44 mag was too expensive for a college kid.

Thanks for the reply! Ya really can't wait till it gets here! I love the looks and feel of the Ruger S/A guns. They use to have a fantastic finish also.. I'm not sure if they still have the same Q/C as they use to. I like there extra strong build. I wanted a small strong reliable gun for when my wife and I go on hikes in the Back woods. We have a ton of black bears and I had many close encounters with them.. In my face close, huffing there wet breath in my face close. I'm 6' and on there back legs with them standing some of them are taller then me. I have had seen some of the biggest I have ever seen in the wild this past few years. Most of the time there not a issue even if we end up spooking them, just a word or two and most of the time there gone.. But not all the time.. Hence the .44 mag. I wanted something that would take one out if I had to.. George

Love my 7.5 SBH, but I do wear a glove when shooting it. Might eventually get new grips to go on it. Haven't shot it much lately as I have yet to buy a set of .44 reloading dies and factory ammo as too $$$.

Mark, Me like for sure.. Wish I had my first Single six it was in 22Lr & 22Mag came with the box and red bag for the mag cyl. I kick myself when ever I think of selling it.. but when I was younger I use to sell of one to fund another.. I learned not to do that anymore! one day I'll have another! George

Gun is in my hands! two days from OK to NH at no extra charge!!! Maybe I got lucky! Fit and finish is 100% I guess the Q/C is what it use to be at Ruger! I'll post pictures as soon as I can! I Love it! Feels so good in my hand. Much nicer then I ever thought it would be! I'm a Happy camper! George
