Any idea what this is?
I know it's a Winchester....lever action and 12guage...beyond that...nothing except it was Grandpa's

Winchester 1887, they are chambered for a shorter "blackpowder" 12 gauge shell of I think 2.5". I'm sure someone has shot modern smokeless loads in them but it is ill-advised, they were manufactured from 1887-1901.

I've seen that model in 10 gauge several times…….but never in 12……I googled it, model 1887/1901…..I don't know what they are worth now……but I could of, and should of bought on at a yard sale I stopped by some where in Iowa……about 1974….price was $200.00…..my guess they are probably worth five times that or more now.

The only one I've actually seen in person was a 12 gauge at the lgs about 3 years ago, it went for $850 and was in worse cosmetic condition than the OP's gun.

The Winchester lever shotguns are pretty much of an anomaly. The first model, 1887, was in 10 or 12 gauge, while the later, 1901, was 10 only. This would have been contrary to the transition generally from the 10 being as common as the 12 to becoming a relatively rare bird. The 1901 was the last repeating shotgun in 10 gauge until I believe Ithaca brought out a semi-automatic.

Thanks for all the help.....did some looking on a couple of other sites and I think this one is in as good shape as any that are selling for $1300

The Chinese are making one now, I believe.....Gunblast reviewed it.
I think they liked it for people who find fun searching for ammo that works in it, and jam clearance practice.
