Any fans of the tip up barrel?
I had my interest piqued by a video about Beretta's various tip up barrel pistols.
Anyone with any history with them?

I have fired a couple. I don't know how much of a history that is. They have their place. Some people have a lot of physical trouble racking the slide. For those people, it would certainly be an advantage if they just had to have a semi-auto.

I have found the small .22 rimfire version useful for teaching young, first time shooters safety and the other basic "fundamentals"......exposed hammer, low noise, light recoil and can easily load one round at a time.

I have a 3032 Tomcat and my brother has a 22 Long rifle version. I know a 380 version is/was made but is impossible to find. We were after one for a family member that has weak grip strength, but already knows how to shoot.
I have found that they are accurate (like most guns) as long as you use good ammo. Kind of like a computer, GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out!). The Quality of ammo in 32 ACP has declined in FMJ, for a number of years now, while premium/ self defense ammo has excelled. In 22 RF there has always been some cheap/junk ammo, it is just getting to the place where only high dollar target ammo will shoot well. I have 1974 Remington Thunderbolt and that age Winchester Wildcat, that shoot as well as Eley Club in the same rifle. They were 79 cents per 50, when not on sale (most of mine was bought on sale for 49 cents/50). The Club is $11.00 per 50, and was about $2.00 or $2.25 then. At this inflation rate, cheep American ammo should be around $2.50-4.00/50 and shoot well! The price is there but not the quality!
We have also noticed, that while all guns are individuals, the Beretta's shoot better, generally speaking, than the Taurus clones. Ivan

I have one. The tip up barrel is great. Full clip, one in the pipe without racking the slide. Its a teeny slide.
Same for unload. Tip up the barrel, remove magazine.
Is it loaded? Just swing the little lever and see.

I have the Tomcat and like it quite well for some of the reasons stated already. I carried it for awhile when I had back surgery and didn't want a lot of weight on my belt but prefer something bigger caliber most times.
I meant to get one of the little 22lr models too but never managed to and think they stopped production of them now. I have a buddy that owns one and says it's surprisingly accurate for a small gun.
I've heard they like to have clean barrels to extract brass properly. I've kept my Tomcat clean and it's always worked fine for me.

I have one in .22 short, reliable because of blowback action, no extractor.

I've got a Minx 22short, Jetfire 25acp, Bobcat 22LR, and Tomcat 32acp. They are fun guns and I've never had an issue with any of them. Keep in mind that they don not have extractors (as mrrick said), so racking the slide on a loaded chamber will not pull the round out. You will need to pop open the barrel to remove the round.

If my hands get much worse I might consider one. Always kind of liked the concept. Still a revolver guy, though, and always will be.

I had a Beretta 21A years back. Had no use for it as I got it on a trade. Good little carry piece. Gave it to my daughter many years ago.

Carried one of the .22 short ones for several years back in the sixties. Got to be reasonably good at point shooting it short range. Have the .22LR version now and have shot it a bit. Still not sure I like the double/single action compared to the pure single action of the Minx.
Shopped around and got one of the .380s off GunBroker several years ago in anticipation of slide handling difficulties. Nice gun. Pricy then and even more so now. Has the double/single action. This is not a small gun; more the size of Glock 19. Wish it had a double stack magazine.

I wonder if the design could handle a 9 mm. I bet that would sell well as shooters age. I am no where near that condition thank God.

I have a Taurus pt22. I like it a lot. It has been very reliable and is a good small package.

The first handgun that I fired was a tip up Beretta.
I was surprised to later find out that all auto barrels didn't tip up.

No extractor is a problem, IMO, for a CCW. Failure to fire drill means tipping the barrel(slow ),
NOT racking the slide(faster ). Racking the slide will not eject the unfired round and will try to feed another round.
This is the reason I sold my Tomcat.
