Default Even sober, sometimes things happen.

My local haunt won a bid for a bunch of Sheriff's Office evidence guns. Amongst the herd of Marlin Model 60s and Rock Island 1911s and Charter Arms Undercovers and inexplicably sightless Single Sixes were these two old Colts:

The top one is a 1911 era Army Special, the bottom a 1939ish Official Police, both .38 Specials.

The good news: I didn't pay much and its not too late. I put some cash down laid them both away for about 4 bills. I only took this one CCPP (****** cell phone picture) before stumbling away in shame.

The bad news: Oh hell, people - look at them. The Army Special apparently was inside a goat and the OP is reblued and has rubber grips.

Neither would be a great loss to gundom if lost forever. So I'm going to full-on Fitz them - Lop barrels to 2", de-spur those hammers, and (cover your ears) cut away the front of the trigger guards.

By the time I do this I'll be retired and can carry what I want. And I will carry them.

Sounds like a plan!

Be sure to post the pictures as you make progress on the Fitz project

Thank you for a hilarious and very well-written post/rant, easily the best of the week, or more. The whole thing is concise and rhythmic, but the best is this:

Very nice!
Please post some after photos.

I'd love to have a Fitz and have been looking around for a beater to turn into one.

After what 30 years pack'in Iron for the Gobermint, you have earned the right to carry exactly what you want in your retirement years. The fact that you carried a "real" 357 Magnum and luckily still carry the Sig P220 you have a good eye for what works. The plastic fantastic on you're ankle not withstanding.
It is going to be a neat project. Glad you found 2 Colts that can be rescued from the cobwebs.

Do criminals have no standards anymore? Can they at least carry decent guns for the police to seize?

Brad,

Is either one agency marked? Sometimes old PD guns turn up among these seizures.

No, I checked, Charles. The gunk on the Army Special looks to be from evidence tape, so it was probably up to no good.
