Default Who else likes the Ruger MkII?

Probably my all time favorite .22 shooter.

This was one of my very first handguns and the one I've held onto the longest.

Totally reliable with any ammo I can think of. Accurate to within a few inches at 50', even better if I can hold it steady!

I prefer the MkII over the later MkIII because it doesn't have the loaded chamber indicator, lock, etc. I think that makes it feed more reliably.

Any other MkII fans out there?

Wait until you try to take it apart and reassemble ... you will quickly have a love-hate relationship with the little Ruger .22 ...

They are difficult to take apart. But I've gotten pretty good at it. It goes a lot faster if you do not remove the housing/barrel from the grip frame. (I think that's what I mean). And you don't really need to do that to completely clean it. You just need to pull the bolt and clean the gunk off of it.

I have some they are very accurate when I find the ammo they like.
A couple less common ones, I recently sold the 10" to a friend.

My first one (a mark III) would drive me buggy reassembling it because it happened maybe once a year.I finally had it completely apart to install some VQ parts and once the frame was done,I just kept installing the receiver, bolt and mainspring housing and breaking it down again until it was permanently burned into the old bean Who else likes the Ruger MkII?

I have a MK2 and a MK3. No problem disassembling or reassembling either one. I do it about every 200 rounds. Just follow the directions in the owners manual. Eeeaasy Peeaasy.

Nice guns but they can be a task to detail strip and put back together again.

Favorite .22 of all time. I had to learn that removing the receiver is unnecessary for cleaning. I also learned not to clean the barrel. So yesterday I ran 300+ rds from a "Wallybox" through the middle one. Not a blip, way more accurate than I can shoot and took about 3 minutes to drop the housing, clean the bolt, look down the barrel (mirror clean) and reassemble. I'd buy another one but the 4 3/4" standard is already unfired. Joe

A Government Target model is on my very short list. I would already have one but a pair of K22 revolvers came my way and I couldnt pass on them.

I've had a Mk II 5" Bull Barrel since about 1987. I still can't reassemble it without following the instructions.

I used to shoot Bullseye matches with a bull-barreled Ruger Mark II.
Started with irons and then went to a red dot sight.
When my youngest son started shooting Bullseye he used the same
gun. (Till he got a Marvel .22/45 conversion unit.)

The gun shot well with just about any .22 ammo. It seems to
like Wolf Match Target just a bit better than the other stuff. Shot some
really tight groups with that.

My Mk III standard is the best shooter I own. Sure, I'd rather have a Mk II, but there wasn't one around when I wanted one. I have never had a bit of trouble from the loaded chamber indicator or the mag interlock; maybe I'll take the trouble to defeat them some day, or not.

I have a stainless bull barrel and it is most accurate. After about 20 years, I bought lunch for the guy at the lgs and he took it apart and cleaned it.

MC5AW and other that are having a hard time putting the gun back together, there is a trick. Tilt that frame at a 45 degree angle so the little thingy is hanging straight down before you slide in the locking part. Wish I knew the names of the parts but it is NEW YEARS EVE and do not feel like looking them up. But it works.

I love it when it goes bang but recently it insists on jamming every third or fourth round. I'm betting that I need a new magazine.

What's there not to like???

When they are dialed in exactly where you want them (i.e. Minute of Grouse Head), they're pretty darn hard to beat.

My favorite 22LR is the Ruger Mark II and I had a stainless bull barrel target model.

This one was customized a little.

I own a plain-Jane Ruger MKIII standard. I used to own a bunch of .22lr semi-auto pistols. None of them performed as well as the Ruger MKIII, so I sold them.

Not a real hard gun to fall in love with, and not a real tough gun to take apart and put back together. There will be the day my two kid's will duke it out for the stainless 5 inch bull barrel that sits in the safe. I better get on the hunt for another MK2 along with a .44 Ruger carbine for my 2 grand daughters or they may not be saying nice things about me when I'm gone!

I am also a fan of the Ruger Mark II. It is my only semi-auto .22 pistol. It is reliable and accurate and did not cost much. What's not to like.

The first rimfire pistol I shot as a lad was a Mark II. When I saw this one at a local funshop for $169 I had to snap it up. The reliability and accuracy of these pistols is why they are legendary. Busting dirt clods on the 50yd berm is easy when I do my part.

While in the Army, I decided that when I got out that I wanted to become really proficient with hand guns. I bought a brand new Ruger MK II from Wilson's sporting goods, in Lavonia, Ga., and went home and hung some old Teflon frying pans around my place in the Georgia Mountains. I could walk out on my deck and snap off a few rounds 24-7 (no neighbors). Pretty soon, I could keep an old pan dancing right through a 10 round clip from 50-75 yards! I credit any accuracy that I have to this day to that experience and time frame. Man, do I miss that.

This thread could bog down the website. You should have asked who doesn't like them to see how few replies you got. I think everyone should have one.

Mark II Government Target.

One of few that I would NOT part with. Makes me look good at the range. Probably the most underrated 22LR pistol ever made.

Got this one for a song. (Don't dance any more) Previous owner put one magazine through it and put it a way.

Changed the grips and put a Hi Viz front sight on.

As others have said, my favorite .22. 5 1/2" bull barrel bought in 1991. It shoots way better than I.

I love them. The trick for me on assembly is to make sure the hammer is up and the hammer strut is hanging in the breeze aimed right for the pocket in the mainspring assembly as you slide it in.

I have a 4 3/4" standard model MkII. Great pistol, very reliable and
accurate. A real bargain in handguns. Every handgunner should own
one. Takedown isn't so hard if you follow the instructions. A plastic
mallet helps.

I like all the Ruger semi-auto 22's. I, II's, and III's. I never saw enough difference in them to get excited about.

I've only got one now, but have had a half-dozen or so over the years. I'll sell them off, then see a good deal on one, and it starts over. The current resident is a Mark III, 22/45, with a 5" bull barrel that I picked up for $219.00, with box and all the accessories.

It was so dirty when I got it, the magazine would drop when I released the bolt. I started to take it back, but decided to clean it first. Got a bunch of gunk out and it works like a champ now.

Speaking of cleaning them, I had trouble the very first time I took one down. I got that thing so locked up I figured it could never be fixed. Well, I finally got it apart again, and the next time I sat down with the book and went over it step by step, word for word, and got it right away. You really have to READ the directions. You can't just skim over them.

After that I practiced it a half-dozen times, and learned not only what to do, but why to do it. No problems anymore.

A Ruger Standard was the first handgun that I owned. I used it in Bullseye shooting all the way up to NRA Master. My son now has that gun.

The Ruger Standard in the above picture (2nd from left) was made in 1957. It is still going strong. The MKII on the right is a Chief AJ modified gun. The trigger is not quite as good as my S&W Mod41's but the gun is just as accurate.

I recently picked-up a Ruger MKII Competition model. This is one came with an optical sight. I was going to remove the optical sight (green dot) but I tried it and now it has become one of my most often used .22s.

Great gun, disassembly is a pain but workable. Accurate and reliable.

After many years of not having a Ruger .22 Pistol, I purchased a Ruger Model 22/45 Target Model with a 5.5" bull barrel.
Opinions on this Model ?

My favorite for the range Jimmy. I had a 4" 22/45, and a 5.5" MK III and they both shot lights out. I have no reason to think my current 5.5, 22/45 won't do the same.

I had a cheap BSA red dot sight on the first two. I'll probably put one on my current one also.

I bought a Government Target Model back in the 80's. Found the 6 7/8" barrel to be a bit front heavy. Mid 90's a coworker had the stainless bull barrel Target Model with the 5 1/2" barrel. He bought it new and put 50 rounds through it. He wanted all the money for it at $300. I sold the Government and grabbed the shorter barrel Target Model. Circa 1988. Killed me to pay him $300. Looking back I'm glad I did.

I have a 50th Anniversary (1949-1999) Mark II, unfired, that I bought new. I have no plans to shoot it. Also have an older version (pre-Mark II), built around 1973. I think they just call this the Standard. I have taken that to the range more than a few times and it has performed flawlessly with any/all miscellaneous .22LR ammo that I've tried. Great plinker.

I have The MKII 6 7/8" Bull Barrel Government Model Target I purchased New in The 80's It's a Great Gun Super Accurate but the stock Trigger is Heavier than I would Like,Not as Light as My 80's S&W Model 41 The 41 is a hair more accurate & much easier to field strip.

Great thread!

The first handgun in our house was this 1972 Standard Auto. Others have come and gone, but this old warrior - purchased by my Dad at Frank's Sport Shop in Decatur, Il - is still with me.

It is the first handgun I ever shot. Somewhere along the way it picked up these Packy's and a mag that is a pain to get out so I haven't shot it much lately. This is a good reminder to buy a proper mag.
