TOOK THE DICK SPECIAL OUT FOR AN AIRING TODAY
I haven't shot my Colt Dick Special in a long time so I figured today was the day - Shot GREAT! While I am STILL a dyed in the wool Smith guy, I have to say that NOBODY - and I mean NOBODY blues a gun like Colt! My Dick Special is a third generation that came with the Black Rubber Pachmeyer style Stocks (yes I know they were not made by Pachmeyer, but do look it) and came in both a blue plastic box with the Colt History cardboard box on the outside. I bought it brand new in the box and it looks to be unfired even though it probably has 250 - 300 rounds through it. I wish Smith could or would do their bluing like that! I once called Colt to see of they would re-blue a Smith but they refused of course.
I replaced the rubber grips with the older style finely checkered Walnut Colt Grips that was popular in the 60's (found a new pair on the net years ago) and the gun shoots like a dream being slightly larger and heavier than my M60-7. No I am not giving upon my M60-7 as I do like the Smith actions better and love the compactness of the little J, but just forgot how pretty and comfortable the little Pony is to shoot. Not bad on the eyes either!
When I came home I detail stripped the Dick Spl. down to an empty frame to clean and lube it - (it's been 15 years since I did that) and while it was in perfect shape, it was slightly dry. Anyway, all is back together now and I have got to remember this one a little beauty more often when I open up the safe and decide what to bring to the Range.

That's a glowing review from a guy named Chief38!
I agree, though. There is something very cool about Detective Specials.

I have a lightweight DS, the Agent. I always liked it but it's never felt as "right" to me as a J-frame. Wonderful handguns, though, those little Colts!

Like I said, I am a SMITH GUY FIRST and FOREMOST. The S&W actions are better, less complicated, more robust, stronger, easier to work on, and IMHO just better than Colts. That said, the Colt's bluing is so deep you can dive in and I must say I have never seen a Smith that could come close to Colt's Royal Blue.
I love my Smiths and almost all my Revolvers are Smiths - I just have a few Colts sprinkled in here and there.

The wife has two for CCW: a .38 Special and a .32 S&W Long. Both mid-1970's vintage and both in beautiful condition (kind of like the wife, although she's mid-1950's vintage). She loves them. I do too but my regular CCW's are a M19 2.5" and a M10 2".

The first firearm I pulled a trigger on when I was six was a 3rd gen Detective Special. Someday I will find one at the right price and add to the nostalgia side of my collection.

I have a second generation that I have done a side by side comparison with a third generation and while both shot well I noticed the second gen was much smoother. They are great sidearms.

WELL, I might as well confess:
In addition to GLOCKS, I have my first service revolver, a Colt Trooper .38spl with a four inch barrel (blued) and a Colt Agent .38spl with a factory hammer shroud (blued).
I AN'T SAYING ANYTHING MORE !!

Nice range day.
I have a few S&W but one lone Colt(hopeful to change that in the future ) and it’s a unshrouded Dick special .38. I rather like the little gun and should shoot it more than I do. Accurate for a gun that size and it does have one more round, interesting as its only a little bigger than a 5 shot Smith.
Enjoy your gun!

My first snub was a Detective Special and learned they weren't so easy to shoot well. Had another later too but both are gone now as I sold most of my Colts to concentrate on S&Ws.
I do like they have 6 rounds over a J frame's 5 but did find them just a tad bulky for easy pocket carry.
I really should have kept one and who knew what their pricing would do?
