Default Bond... James Bond

Snatched up this nearly immaculate Beretta 418 today. Sat in the gun shop case and I was shocked to see it.

Gold plated trigger (which might actually make it a model 420, not sure) bluing has turned a beautiful plum color. Original mag, grips are great. No scratches, no pitting or signs of rust. Alas, no box. It is stamped "1958". Serial # 40361C in case anyone can add to my knowledge of this little pistol.

Have not had a chance to clean her up so it looks a little dingy and has some dust and smudges but it should be sweet once I get her home and give her a bath.

In one of the early films he had to turn in his Beretta .25 for the PPK .32, which "hits like a brick through a plate glass window". Personally I prefer the gun the character used in Live and Let Die (this is the cue for someone to find a still from the island rescue scene) .

You should post this on the Walther forum. They love ANYTHING "Bond" doesn't matter if it's Beretta or whatever.
If Daniel Craig uses a HighPoint in the next movie they would want pics.

There's a post there where a guy "built" or modified a Beretta to be exactly like what Bond used to carry as described in the book (except for the sanitized serial number).

I love this forum so much! Only here could you get so many people that still appreciate the cool value of non-tacticool weapons

I will post this over on the Walther Forum as well. Should be fun to see the responses.

Years ago I had a chance to bet a NIB ppk/s. Being a big Bond fan, I did not hesitate. I now also have a pp 22 and a pp 32.

Scaramanga with his Golden Gun made from a pen and a Dunhill lighter and Bond with his PPK.

Ian Flemming knew nothing about handguns when he started writing but did learn after the hit like a brick comment.

Gotta throw it out there, first handgun I ever bought at 21 years of age. Walther PPK/S .380 dated 1972, German made.
Was an outstanding .380 then, and still is. Wouldn't sell it on a bet! Bought it new in the gun department of a Woolworth's.

When Live and Let Die came out, Dirty Harry had made big powerful revolvers movie-cool. Of course 007 had one. Silly that he fired it six times and threw it away...one would think MI6 would train its agents to cary some extra ammo.

In the books, Bond often resorted to a "long barreled Colt 45" when concealment was not an issue and violence was likely. This, of course, could have been many things (SAA, Govt Model) but I always envisioned a New Service in 45 Colt.

Scaramanga, the villian in "The Man with The Golden Gun", used a gold plated SAA 45 with a 7.5" tube. This was Flemings last book.

Here's a page full of various guns featured in Live & Let Die on Internet Movie Firearm Database.... a great resource.
Some S&Ws include the escort, Model 10, 19 and 29.
Live and Let Die - Internet Movie Firearms Database - Guns in Movies, TV and Video Games

The Beretta he was ordered to hand over in 'Dr. No' (the Movie, that is) was an M1934.

(In the novels, FRWL came before Dr. No, which is where the Beretta (in the book, a model 418) nearly cost Bond his life)

My wife and I recently watched Skyfall. Daniel Craig (my favorite 007) is using a Walther in "9mm short".

Major Boothroyd: [to M, referring to Bond's Baretta] Nice and light... in a lady's handbag.

M: Any comment, 007?

James Bond: I disagree, sir. I've carried the Baretta for ten years, and I've never missed with it.

M: No, but it jammed on you last job, and you spent six months in hospital in consequence. When you carry a 00 number, you have a license to kill, not get killed. Furthermore, since I've been head of MI7

[sic - MI6]

M: there's been a forty percent drop in casualties, and I want to keep it that way. From now on you carry the Walther... unless you'd rather return to standard intelligence duties.

James Bond: No sir,I would not.

M: [to Boothroyd] Show him, Armourer.

Major Boothroyd: [to Bond] Walther PPK, 7.65 millimeter, with a delivery like a brick through a plate-glass window. The American CIA swear by them.

Ironic part of this movie - Bond is issued a "smart gun" PPK so no one else can use it. (*Spoiler Alert*!). But in the last part of the film, "M" saves the day...using his PPK. Guess the technology just isn't there yet .

That PPK may have been a different one... I thought Bond 'lost' his smart gun in the casino (pit) fight.

I have a 418, and my sentiments are the same as "M". "That damned Beretta". I found it a nasty little bugger to shoot, jammed frequently and even sent a case in my shirt, that landed on my collarbone and burned me.

In the book, "Dr. No", Bond is also offered the S&W Airweight as an alternative to the Walther PPK. He took both to Jamaica. The downside to the S&W was that it only held five rounds, and it was heavier than the PPK. At the end of the book he advised that the S&W Airweight was ineffective against the "dragon".

In "Moonraker", mention is made of the "long barrel Colt". I'm convinced that this was a New Service, since it was chambered in .45 Colt.

No Quarter your gun is a mod 418. The plastic grips marked "Panther"
and the plated trigger are standard for late production 418s. 1958
seems to have been when production ended, I have one marked 1958
and I don't think any have been seen in the US with a later date. The
alloy frame became standard about 1947. Earlier versions with steel
frames and half moon safeties were mod 318s. I have a couple of
318s. The most common problem with these guns is probably a weak
striker spring. People probably store them for years with the striker
cocked, not realizing the damage being done. Bent striker tips are
another problem, probably caused by trapped empty case jams. I
enjoy plinking with mine occasionally but I probably wouldn't carry
one for primary self defense.

Ian Fleming (just one "m") carried a Baby Browning .25 as a Royal Navy intelligence officer in WWII and was given a Colt Official Police .38 by US Gen. Wm. Donovan, the OSS chief.

I don't know when he acquired his Colt New Service .45, and it may be the "long-barreled .45 Colt" that Bond had in his Bentley. The Royal Canadian Navy bought some in 1940 and the UK was acquiring other Colts then, too. Some probably found their way into Intelligence and SOE armories.
Fleming may have bought his soon after the war.

I don't really know what he knew about guns, but not a lot. He did own six or so handguns by 1960, when, "Life" showed some in a major feature on him and his books. His Ruger MK I .22 was probably the inspiration for a similar gun mentioned in one of his short stories. I don't think he ever bought a PPK, but he seems to have owned a S&W Centennial Airweight, with which he posed for photos on some book jackets. He also held the Colt .38 for such pics.

If you read, "The Man With the Golden Gun", you'll see his opinion of those with what he termed an excessive interest in guns. See the psychiatrist's report being read by M, as it pertained to Scaramanga. Fleming also challenged Harold L. Peterson's claim that the gun had more impact on civilization than anything else. Fleming thought the printing press was better qualified.

But he was unusual among authors in that he did own and shoot handguns. If he hunted with long arms, I've seen no reference to that. His hobbies included SCUBA diving and spearfishing and (I think) golf. The diving was done mainly or exclusively when vacationing in Jamaica, then still a Crown Colony. A major magazine showed his estate, Goldeneye, in a feature several years ago and mentioned that he often spearfished for lunch while there. The article also showed his typewriter.

Very few fiction authors seem to know a lot about guns or to own any. Hemingway, Ruark, Donald Hamilton, and very few others seem to have been gun people. I think Robert B. Parker owned several guns and he had a Massachusetts carry permit. But I don't think he was really a firearms expert. John Sandford is still writing and he hunts and owns a few guns, maybe more. But he's a former newspaperman and has liberal leanings that may preclude him being too much into guns. He certainly seems to know a lot more about rock music and people who may appear in, "Rolling Stone" than he does about guns. But he hasn't been aggressively anti-gun in his several series, of which I read the Virgil Flowers and the Lucas Davenport "Prey" books. In fact, Flowers, although he seems to keep up with his service weapon rather casually, fishes, as does Davenport, and the latter has hunted, I think, as has his stepdaughter, who once ran a trap line.

C.J. Box told me that he hunts birds, with a Remington M-870. But most of the gun data in his series about a Wyoming game warden comes from a warden he knows. Wilbur Smith has guns and hunts, but he has sometimes botched his gun data. More often, he's right, and he even surprised me by knowing about a SMG that I hadn't heard of in his newest book. A check with members on, Gunboards confirmed that it's real.

You didn't mention the novelist and film critic Stephen Hunter, apparently a true gun guy.

Hunter S. Thompson blew his brains out with a S&W 645 and William Burroughs blew his wife's brains out trying to do a William Tell and shoot a glass of gin off her head in Mexico. Burroughs created Shotgun Art.

Bond's use of firearms has always confused me. He downs a helicopter with an Armilite AR7 (chambered in .25acp according to Q) by killing a bad guy but passes on taking down a helicopter with a .500 Nitro Express Double rifle.

But as a fan of 007 even I have a little PPK 7.65mm because it hits like brick, a very small brick. Manufactured in 1941 mines just a tad older.

Bill-

What a terrific photo! As is usual with you...

As for the comment about Stephen Hunter, I've never read any of his books, so don't know about his gun info or if the author owns any.

I've often wondered if Bond's PPK was a current commercial one or one captured during WWII.

I've never owned a PPK because I thought the wraparound grip might break if dropped. I did have a Model PP and would buy a stainless PPK/S. But I felt that the M-34 Beretta was more reliable. I liked one that I had for a time.

The real Geoffrey Boothroyd felt that Bond should carry a snub S&W .38. After 1965, he wrote that the new Model 60 stainless Chief's Special was the logical Bond gun, due to the stainless construction. But Fleming had died the previous year, so nothing came of that idea.

Boothroyd also wanted a S&W Model 27 under the dash of the Bentley, to replace the "long-barreled Colt .45". He mentioned that part of that decision was that the .357 could also fire .38 ammo for the snub carry gun.

I think that he was among the best gun writers, ever, although seldom published in the USA. His book, "The Handgun" is an epochal study of the matter and is warmly recommended.

What's the difference between the green and blue covered US passports? Are diplomatic passports red?

BTW, I corresponded with the real Boothroyd and asked why Bond had a 7.65mm (.32) Walther instead of a .380. He said that there was probably little practical difference in stopping power, and that a .32 held an additional ctg.

I think the .32 is also somewhat more common in Europe. But I wonder if the rimless .380 round may feed more reliably.

I've shot a fair amount of .380 acp and .32 acp in my various autos,
mostly Beretta 1934s and 35s. Either caliber is usually quite reliable
in the Berettas but I have had a few more feeding problems with the
.32s than the .380s. The problem seems to be that some brands of
import .32 ammo have a rather thick rim on the case that doesn't
easily slide under the extractor hook when being stripped from the
magazine. This doesn't happen with every gun due to slight differences
in the extractor dimensions. As usual for reliability the ammo must
be a good match for the gun. The Berettas are probably more reliable
than most .32 and .380 autos in general.
