Default New respect for Beretta's

Hi all, when the Pa State Police went to their new duty pistol and as a civilian employee I was eligible to pick and purchase one of our soon to be replaced Beretta 96 D in .40 S&W pistols. I figured it to be not much more than a memento of my time with the outfit as I was not really enamored of either the Beretta or the .40 S&W cartridge, not bashing the .40 mind you, just satisfied with my .44's and .45's to fill my big bore need's. At the time good SD ammo was dirt cheap (like Speer Lawman gold dots for $11.99 a box of fifty and such) so I laid in a good supply of ammo for it and pretty much put em away. Well yesterday I took it out for a range session and had at it, the DA only function did not bother me at all since that's the way I run revolvers and it is a rather accurate pistol with no function troubles at all. And wonder of wonders the tritium's still glow.

The "new respect" part come in when I cleaned the beast last night and really paid attention to the steel slide assembly and all it's intricate and really clean machine work done. Although not really "jewel like" it is very nicely done. I just may be tempted on a well priced 92 series gun in 9mm! Have a nice week all!

How long ago was that? If I'm not mistaken the Beretta was their first semi auto. They've been running Glocks, and now Sig, for quite a while

Now that's a good question! I retired in 2008 and I think they transitioned to the Glock in ,45 GAP around three years prior to that so I would venture a guess at around 2004-2006. I'm afraid I'm one of those guys who doesn't really pay attention to the details and timing of such thing's!

It's been quite awhile........maybe 15 years (or more).

I've been a Beretta fan since the late 80s.......

For some fancy but really thin grips....... check out Wilson Combat Ultra Thin G-10s.....you can change the medallions ...Beretta medallions available at Brownells.

There was "reported" issue with the "silver finish" (?) on those PSP guns and a certain gun cleaner.... can't remember which one

I jumped on the 40S&W wagon early and had quite a few pistols of various brands in that caliber. A Beretta 96 centurion I had was by far the best in that caliber.

I have a 96 and it is the most comfortable semi in my hands. I agree that it is a good value in todays world. I put a set of CT grips and it is my nightstand gun.

I shot a 96 and remember as being the mildest shooting .40 I had ever tried except maybe the the Steyr M40.

Beretta makes good stuff, haven't they been around for over 400 years? I had a Cougar at one point. Still wish I had it, but I traded it for a Mini 14, which was a trade up in my opinion.

Can't beat Beretta. I have a M96A1 in .40 S&W and a M84fs Cheetah 13 round .380. I wouldn't trade either. Carried a M92G 9mm on duty years ago, loved that one too
