Default Colt! light weight Commander 38 super

Being a devout S&W guy I need a little help on this one.S/N is 602XX-LW
I took this in trade on a car and haven't found much info as to value.
It appears unfired in the original box with IB. I did find that it was made in 1968. The ones that I have found for sale on the internet are all newer, mostly series 80.
So Colt folks, what do you think?
Thanks
Bob Ray

Colt Forum

The best place to ask on Colt is here ^^^

I am sure they can assist.
I know the Supers are pretty valuable. May be worth lettering it too.
Good luck.

I'd guess 1500-2000.

I have to agree. To me, any older Series 70 brings a premium, especially the steel frame model. New Series 70s are okay, too, but I like the older ones.

Have you seen the current Series 70 Government Models? I have one, and it is made to very high standards.

Why they call it a Series 70 I don't know. To me, the hallmark of the original Series 70 was the collet bushing. The current gun does not have this feature. It is exactly like a post WW2 Government Model up to 1970, except for the slightly higher sights. These are great guns.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic post.

As to value of your Lightweight Commander, I think $1,200 to $1,500. If it had a steel frame I think it would be higher as stated above. But in these crazy times, who knows?

The series 80 has a firing pin block that's moved out of the way when the trigger is pulled.
The series 70 doesn't have that,so in theory,it could go off,if its smacked hard enough.I think the new version also uses a titanium firing pin to reduce that bit of mass.

If made in 1968 it would be a pre-70 series pistol. I agree it would run $1500-2000 in the condition described.
For many years Colt headspaced the .38 Supers on the rim and they aren't exactly noted for accuaracy. Never the less, its still a very desirable collectable.
If you plan to use it as a serious shooter, have a new barrel installed that headspaces on the case mouth and accuracy will improve greatly. Just be sure to keep the original barrel so you can return it to original condition if you should decide to sell it.
BTW: Commander and Combat Commander models never had a collet barrel bushing as they use a shorter bushing.

As arjay says, the difference is the firing pin safety that was introduced with the Series 80 is not present in the reintroduction of the series 70 pistols. It is easier to do good, repeatable triggers on a non-series 80

I like the new Series 70s. I also like serial numbers. This is serial number 70 of the new 70 series from when they were first introduced in 2002.

Pre-70 series 38 Super Commanders bring Cult like money on the auction sites.

I collect those old Super .38's and can tell you that if it's truly NIB,you have a $2500 pistol. As stated by a previous poster, the Combat Commander will bring a little more than the lightweight. JMO,FWIW.
