Fun with a coach gun ...
Courtesy of Hickok45 ... The $200 tax stamp and long paperwork wait can yield some impressive firearms.

Dang!!! I don't know what it is, but there's something about a sawed-off coach gun that just means business!!
Ya gotta love it!!!

I'm with Mule ... the image of a sawed off SxS is as menacing as it is romantic in a Steve McQueen/Yul Brynner way.
That said, for $195 less (AOWs cost only $5 for the stamp) you could have one of these little gems (stock photo), also known as a Blunderbuss pump:

Do they actually sell those to civilians as long as you have an AOW stamp?? Where can I get one-I tried to look for it on the net but couldn't find it.

Yes indeed, although the pre-Ilion Rem 870s are tough to find. Years ago, they were advertised as Secret Service overruns, and were priced <$600. Now if you can find them on the used market, they go for $1,000+. There are also Mossberg and Serbu Shorty AOWs, but the pre-Ilion Rem pumps are the best. Impact Guns used to have the 870s, but no more.

Talk to Charlie Sharell, he has a 12 or 14" 870. Once you have the short barrel stamp, the shoulder stock vs pistol stock is a mute point. In Cowboy action shooting, I have used a 22" hammer & a 20" hammerless coach gun. Whenever I can I stick with my 18" '97 Winchester! Reloading the SxS's is a slow process, no matter how fast those guys on YouTube are! Ivan

The AOW $5 tax stamp is based on the shotgun leaving the manufacture with a pistol grip, and a barrel length 12"-18". If you put a full length stock on an AOW shotgun, you have entered SBS territory and need the $200 stamp.
The beauty of AOWs is the ambiguous classification. Here's what ATF says:
Firearms - Guides - Importation & Verification of Firearms - National Firearms Act Definitions - Any Other Weapon | ATF

My F-I-L did tests for the Columbus PD in the Late 60's and early 70's. One of the tests was on shotgun patterns for Police use on individuals, and groups. With #4 buckshot or larger, patterns would not spread any faster than 1" per yard of distance from the muzzle, on several barrel lengths from 12 to 24 inches. In the video the distance appears to be 5 or 6 yards to most targets. He shot a one target early on and missed by a foot to the left, and nothing happened to the can that was the target. I assumed the shot size he was using was a typical "Cowboy" leagle shot size so I would estimate it was 7.5 birdshot. The pattern may spread a little more with the small shot but not enough to make any big patterns. I always find it entertaining to see the power of even light shot shells at close range. In High School my brother replaced the lead shot with rock salt in a few target shells for a girl friend having problems with the neighbor's male dog and her female. She came to school Monday screaming at my brother for killing the dog. He ask how far away she shot him? 4 or 5 yards was the answer. After watching this video you can imagine the results! Poor dog! I believe you are money ahead to buy an 870 and cut it, paying the 200 dollar tax for "making a firearm", than to pay a grand or more for an 870 "Witness Protection", just so you can get it on a five-dollar stamp.
I wanted an Auto and Burglar. Because they were collector guns, they were waaaaay outside my "I'll pay that" range.
Then I hear that a shop called Denny's Guns is making 'em. Buy Italian doubles that had never been stocked, so he could paper them as AOWs. But he wanted 900 bucks.
Or I could pay 200 for a Rossi Overland, and another 200 tax so I could cut it.
Four hundred versus nine?
