Default Went to buy one gun and bought another....

A LGS is having a sale on police trade in G37s in .45 GAP w/ 100 rounds of ammo for $300. So, last Saturday I went by there to get one. They are literally in stacked in a big cardboard box on the floor behind the counter. A county and city government consolidated forming one police agency etc. I recently bought a S&W 5906 for $249 from this same store when one of these agencies swapped them in due to the merged departments.

Well...... I passed on the G37. But, of course, I didn't leave empty handed:

The "new" department will be carrying Glock 17 Gen4 9mms.

Best,
Charles

The .45 GAP, an answer for which there was no question.

Curious, any reason other than the lack of available ammo?

See post #4, but lack of ammo is about the best reason going. It's a dead cartridge.

I think that's the "Made in USA" stamp. If you go to the Glock website and look at the right side view, it looks like there is an outline of the State of Georgia on that side.

Glock makes two other pistols in .380. ( Glock 25 & 28). They are not imported because they don't qualify under the BATF's point system. So, building the Glock 42 in Smyrna Ga. takes care of that problem.

Best,

At $300, IF I could get some additional ammo, I'd be tempted to buy one or two, test shoot them, then put them away for emergencies.

Now I know there are better choices, but temptation is temptation.

The .45 GAP was a good cartridge in theory. The idea being, to fit a .45 bore in a 9/40 gun.

What I think killed it was twofold: the primary reason for its existence was self-cancelled when they had to thicken the slide--thus killing holster compatibility. Secondly, the fat cartridges don't fit well in a 9/40 magazine--thus resulting in zero increase in capacity over other .45s.

If these two reasons didn't exist, I'm pretty sure that ammo would have been avavilable to meet demand. However, there was essentially no demand for it, due to the reasons above.

Glocks are for people who don't have to have pretty guns to shoot.

But, in a more serious topic....thank you for your service Joe.

To the best of my knowledge only 5 state LE agencies issue the .45 GAP...N.Y., GA., PA., S.C. and FL. and I see it as a caliber eventually dying on the vine.

Due to recent advancements it bullet designs the .40 S&W cal. LE rush has died down and the pendulum has begun to swing back towards the 9 mm.

With higher capacities, cheaper overall cost, less wear & tear & street perform about the same, I think we'll see more and more LE agencies taking this route.

Way too big for a pocket-ish sized .380 for my liking. Best of luck with it to you though!

You can cross Georgia off that list. The State Patrol is transitioning to the Gen 4 Glock 17 9mm.

I agree. Butt ugly. But darn it, they work well. I don't look at it with the same love I do some , OK, all my S&W revolvers, but I drop one in the holster every day and and feel good about it.
