Default Folding knives

One of our own wants to see a discussion on folding knives. Easy to do; I have dozens.

We'll keep this general. After I take pictures of others I'll discuss variations.

Smith & Wesson Forum - ISCS Yoda's Album: Blades - Picture

These two are with me almost every day. The SAK 95% of the time; the Browning less because I carry a Boker AK switchblade more often.

https://www.google.com/search?q=boke...36%3B510%3B340

Texas dropped the illegality of switchblades last legislature so the folding lockback/tactical folders that I have were replaced by a Boker AK switchblade for daily carry. Small, reliable, sharp, and obviously easier to open than a two-handed requirement or even a thumb stud. There are some non-switchblade springing open knives easier to open than even a switchblade; I have a Benchmade (picture for the future) that excels at that.

So, since this is a general knife thread, let's pose some questions.

Do you carry a knife every day?

What kind of knife?

How large?

How do you carry it?

No polls for this. Just talk.

I carry other knives on my belt, also. Usually a small, fixed blade; sometimes a folder, sometimes the blue SAK. It's as much a don't leave home without it as a firearm is in my book.

Now, bear in mind that I live in Texas. If you happen to live in a knife unfriendly jurisdiction, such as NYC, you better read their rules and follow them. Almost everything is illegal except certain small fixed blades (I think) and folders that do not lock. They WILL arrest you for almost any knife that they can even force to be a "gravity knife" under their rules. Also, almost every large, public building/office building has security and metal detectors. Disallowing knives is a normative behavior in that city of paranoia and hoplophobia. Remember that.

Okay, rock and roll with knives amigos!

One of two Benchmade automatics with a pocket clip every day. Benchmade automatic and Benchmade butterfly in the truck bag. Also a Gerber, Buck, or other very small one blade folder in the pocket. If it's a jeans day, Randall boot knife in addition to the other two. When somebody asks if they can borrow a knife, the standard response is "Are you cutting people or stuff . . . ?"

Leatherman Skeletool. I wanted a multitool with a pocket clip. It has a blade, pliers (w/ small cutters), and screwdriver heads, the three things I needed.

Folding knives? Did somebody say, "folding knives?" Yep, I definitely have a few.

Now, to answer ISCS Yoda's questions...
Do I carry a knife everyday? You bet your bobsled I do! I've carried one everyday since I was six years old. That was sixty years ago. As a result, I've accumulated quite a few of 'em over the years.
What kind of knife? Usually a Case Trapper.
How large? Two 3-inch blades...a clip blade and a spey blade.
How do I carry it? It rides in the left front pocket of my Wranglers.
I also carry a Buck 110 on my belt. I use these knives everyday from everything to cutting the string on hay bales to opening feed sacks to opening my mail. I don't know what I'd do without a good knife on me.

I feel so strongly about the importance of having a good pocket knife on you that I've made it a tradition to give everyone of my 14 grandchildren a pocket knife on their seventh birthday. I've already given seven of them and our eighth grandchild will be receiving his Case stockman's knife on the 25th of this month. My grandfather gave me my first pocket knife when I was around that age. I can't think of a better way to tell a kid that you trust him.

Do you carry a knife every day?

Absolutely, I feel naked without a knife

What kind of knife?

Generally, I carry a SAK of some flavor with my favorite being the Alox Soldier, on weekends I will add a large single blade like the Gerber Applegate Covert or a 4-5 inch fixed blade BHK Nessmuk or Green River style skinner.

SAK Soldier

Gerber Applegate Fairbairn Covert

BHK Muk

How large?

My knives would be considered small by some standards, if I feel the need for heavy chopping I carry a tomahawk or small hatchet. I'm a follower of the Nessmuk Trinity.

How do you carry it?

SAKs loose in the pocket
Bigger knives with the pocket clip
Fixed blades on the hip

I have way more blades than I do blade pictures.
Right this second, I have a SOG Twitch II in my pocket.

Carry one everyday. Among them: Grayman Dua, Emerson A100, Benchmade Presidio, Protech Harkins (manual), Kershaw Boa and others. Never leave home without one.

I always carry at least one small multi-tool and one decent blade. My favorite small multi is the Leatherman Micra. My favorite pocket carry is a Griptilian or a 551 Mini Barrage. My Kershaw Leeks (stainless for office wear, Rainbow for the clubs) and the SOG Spec Elite that Conchita gave me for Christmas also get a lot of play.

In my younger days I would usually choose between a SAK and an Opinel with my small Anza in a front pocket with its sheath, or a puukko if I needed a longer fixed blade. These days I will usually grab a Mora. I almost never wear a knife on my belt.

I have a folding knife with me every day... I have several, but a Benchmade 531 is quickly becoming a favorite. I also have a SAK on my key chain and usually a Leatherman Juice in the other pocket. I've ordered a Squirt and plan to try it on my key ring for a while.

I carry a D2 blade Benchmade Mini-Griptilian clipped to my left front pocket. It is tip up. I can pull it and open it with one motion. I haven't owned nor can I think of a better carry knife for me.

I've carried and used it everyday for the past few years. If I loose it I will get another one without hesitation.

EDC, 2" boker fighting folder. homemade nylon sheath w/ D ring on belt loop. BC tanto folding/ nylon sheath if the day might be heavy. when i lived in a southern state a double edged blade was illegal. so a good sturdy boot knife was a paper weight. now the northern state i presently live in the double edged is also not a ck.

I believe Yoda started this thread because of me...he saw me flailing around in another thread trying to figger out what knife I want. Thanks, Yoda.

I don't have a clue what knife I want, but I know what I want it to do.

1. First, I want a good knife but am not looking for the "right" name to be on it I want it to do a job, not impress anyone with my choice of brands.
2. Good quality probably goes without saying. Without going crazy, I'd rather spend a bit more once than have to spend less but do it over and over.
3. I would prefer either pocket or clip carry...I really don't want a case hanging on my belt if I can get what I want without the belt case. It will probably be a clip on rather than pocket because what I want takes a bit of size.
4. I like (but am not married to) the tactical appearance (black nylon?) but not a skeleton.
5. Probably a single blade thumb opening lock blade, but you guys might show me a reason for something else. (I also have to consider the knife laws in Georgia, which I am looking into now.
6. I'll probably carry it hunting so something for cleaning game is a plus.
7. I want something that would be good in a 3 day bag as well as my pocket...everything from cutting cord to build a shelter to cutting small branches...SMALL branches...to use to build a fire or support a small tarp shelter.
8. No whittling, fingernail clipping, etc.
9. Just a good EDC knife.

Questions? Ask away...and thanks.

I've carried at least one knife every day for almost seventy years. Nearly all men and boys, and a great many women and girls, carried pocketknives. And needed them, daily.

These days I normally have a Swiss Army knife--the alox Pioneer, same as the one that used to be actually issued to the troops, or a Super Tinker--or a regular pocketknife in my left front pocket. I like a stockman pattern best, usually in the four-inch-closed size.

Clipped in my right hip pocket most days is a Spyderco Endura, with a four-inch flat ground VG-10 blade, which was a gift from a generous friend. Has brown scales, which I had never seen before.

Other days I carry a SOG Flash II assisted opener. It has a four-inch drop-point blade, AUS-8 steel. Very nice knife for the money, good cutter, and holds an edge well; but the Spyderco is my choice most of the time.

I almost never have occasion to carry a belt knife anymore. When I do it's a Bark River Highland Special: four-inch drop-point cryo-treated A2 blade, convex ground and formidably sharp, with green canvas Micarta handle.

Like Mule Packer, I give knives to kids. Each of my son's three boys has received a Swiss Army knife and at least one sheath knife.

Spyderco Delica 1st Gen all day, every day. Occasionally Spyderco Endura 1st Gen.

I have several first Generation Delica's and Endura's with G2 and Aus 8 blades, wide integrated/molded FRN pocket clip, plain, serrated and combo edges. Pinned construction. I really dislike torx or any screw construction and liners on any EDC knife preferring the lightweight, maintenance free early spydercos.

The Spyderco Endura is a fine, tough cutting tool, Bob. Some people like the smaller Delica, but I think the four-inch blade is more versatile.

Having said that, however, I prefer a drop point blade for dressing out game.

I own many Case brand knives from large to small and old to young. I carry a case pocket knife every day and have for 40 years. I still own a bunch of Zippo lighters but dont take one with me most days as I don't smoke anymore. I still have one on my dresser ready to go and flints and fluid for starting fires. I have a 100 Case knives and Case NASCAR knives as well in wooden boxes for several drivers including Fireball Roberts and Dale Earnhardt.

Right now I carry a Buck 285 Bantam w/ 420HC 3 1/8" blade. It's not a bad $20 knife and looks good, but I wanted something a little more "rugged".

I just ordered a Spyderco lightweight Native 5 with FRN grips and S35VN 3" blade. I should receive it in the mail sometime this weekend.

Showd this one recently but will do it again. I had a knife like this when stationed in Alaska. Got transfered to Vietnam; once riding in a chopper it slipped out of the patch pocked in my fatigues, and was lost. I asked my wife to send me another. This is it. I carried it until a few years ago when the knife had been sharpened to where the point stood out from the body of the knife. Uncomfortable in a pocket. Also the red plastic had worn away around the Swiss cross; that thing is metal and is sharp; very uncomfortable to handle. I retired this one and daily carry another one just like it. I use the blades some, but get more use out of the screwdrivers.

At work I have carried a Gerber LST Magnum Jr for the last 15 years. On my second one as I sharpened the edge off my first so it would no longer hold. Off work I carry a Kershaw Scamp. I like the thin width and nice one hand action on it.

Also, not really a great EDC knife, but my Ontario Rat 1 with AUS 8 3.5" serrated blade is a really good, affordable folding knife that I don't mind beating up on my girlfriend's 8 acres. For $30, it's a bargain. If you're looking for a tough knife, but don't want to spend too much, I suggest checking them out.

It was common for all boys to have a pocket knife when I was a kid. I can remember playing mumblypeg(sic?) in the school yard during recess in elementary school. My dad and all the men I knew carried a pocket knife just like they all wore a watch. Dad was a man of modest means so he had a Timex and a well worn Camillus Boy Scout type knife...I still have that old Camillus and the main blade is worn way down with sharpening and stained nearly black since it is a carbon steel blade.

I carry two knives, sometimes three, whenever I leave the house. These days, I usually have a SAK Tradesman in my pocket and a Spyderco Paramilitary clipped in the same pocket. Frequently, my Emerson CQC-10 is in my right hand back pocket. I have many knives, folding and fixed blades. I also have hatchets, machetes, swords, tomahawks and even a couple spears...None are wall hangers.

Around the house, I usually carry a Spyderco Pacific Salt plain edge. It's lightweight and it can't rust. I live near the Atlantic where the air is salty...One knife to do everything with, from opening boxes to dressing deer? To me, that's like wanting one gun that can do it all...I suppose one of my four inch K frames or Security Sixes in .357 COULD pretty much do everything I need a handgun to do but I like having choices. I don't know anyone who has only one knife and one gun. There are many choices when it comes down to both but knives are fun because I can afford to buy various knives...not really expensive knives I would be afraid to use...and I can buy them via internet and have them delivered to my house. When I travel, I like to go to knife shops and get something...Smokey Mountain Knife Works is one of my favorite places to visit.

As a certified steelhead I carry slipjoints, framelocks, liner locks, backlocks, you name it. My daily carry at the moment and for the foreseeable future is a Chris Reeve Umnumzaan with a 3.675" blade clipped to my right front pocket.

Before this Umnum arrived earlier this month I could be found with a Spyderco, Buck, Benchmade, CRK Sebenza, Case, GEC, Kershaw or ZT in my pocket. At some point I'll probably move this latest one out of the rotation but for now I'm enjoying it too much.

I was hoping to see some antique bone handle folders. I guess I will have to have the wife photograph some of mine.

Well, mine's not an antique, but it is a folder with bone scales. So I'm in the game.

This is my Case canoe folder I have carried every day since about 1982. It is part of me. If I put my hand in my right front pocket and it's not there I immediately feel that something is wrong.

The bone scales have worn down to the point of being just smooth. All the original relief is gone. The bolsters, rivets, and shield are all proud. This knife stays sharp with my regular attention, and I have just about sunk the bottom of the Indian's canoe over the many years. I can't say how many deer I have gutted and skinned with this knife, nor how many squirrels. Two elk have known this knife; the first in 1987 and the second in 1992. There's no reason to carry a big belt knife.

The larger blade measures 2-1/2" from bolster to tip. The knife is 6-1/8" overall when open; 3-5/8" closed. It is the old version with a single back spring, so it is nice and thin. It balances perfectly. I wouldn't trade it for a truckload of Bucks, Spydercos, Gerbers, Shrades, etc. It's my knife.

And here's how it looks to me:

Wow! That is one fine knife. It's a little larger than I like to every day carry.
Not to mention at the top end of my budget!

I would like one just like this, but smaller.

It balances perfectly. I wouldn't trade it for a truckload of Bucks, Spydercos, Gerbers, Shrades, etc. It's my knife.

And here's how it looks to me:

Curl
Now that is a knife. I collect antique Case knives, and this one intrigues me. I have always admired guns and knives that have to work for a living. Yours have character in spades. So many knives have no history. My main carry knife was a Case Tested (1920-1940) green bone handled 2 blade folder. It has known many deer, elk, and antelope.

A local makes these and puts a table up at our local gun show. These are my latest acquisitions from him. Damascus design with stag handle on one and olive wood on the other.

I am on my 3rd EDC folding pocket knife. The first two lasted roughly 25 years each, I still have them, just don't carry them anymore. 1st was a Camillus Cutlery Barlow that my grand father gave me. 2nd was a small Kershaw lockback folder. I guess I really have had 4, I bought a Benchmade Mini Griptilian with a Tanto blade and loved everything about it except the blade shape. So I sold it and ordered a Mini Griptilian with a drop point blade. Much better for me and it may last longer than me. Same thing Kozmic said, tip up allows a draw from the corner of my back pocket to open in one movement. I added a free from Benchmade deep carry clip to the 1st one and transferred it to the second, it works well for me also.

Stay safe, John

Let's see...I own a small collection.

S&W Border Guard 4
Gerber Icon Tanto
Cold Steel Pro Guard
Tiger USA folding karambit
KaBar LDK
Spyderco Tenacious

The Cold Steel I like best as a defensive fixed blade, but without a proper sheath I rarely carry it. Not really much of a utility blade.

The Gerber I've carried for years as a utility knife, but it's huge at 10 inches opened, so I settled on the Tenacious for regular carry.

The Spyderco is smaller, as light and just a better blade. It's profile is wider but still a good choice.

If you've ever seen the Kabar Ldk, it's tiny and more of a novelty but still a cool knife to have.

I carry two knives daily. A Swiss Army Ranger and a Spyderco Paramilitary II. I carry the SAK in my left pocket and the Spyderco in right.

I have a thing for 91mm SAKs since that's what my Dad had. I lost a few and stopped carrying them, people using my knife and not returning it.

Now I seven. I got back into carrying them after I started carrying the Paramilitary. It's not something as innocuous as a SAK.

I have so many knives that it will take me quite awhile to take pictures and discuss them here. But since I started this thread and mentioned every day carry here's two that routinely accompany me:

Smith & Wesson Forum - ISCS Yoda's Album: Blades - Picture

Smith & Wesson Forum - ISCS Yoda's Album: Blades - Picture

The Arno Bernard was being shown by that company and some distributors at the Dallas Safari Club Expo. The folks at Arno Bernard are a nice group and a great team, A makes this, B, makes that, etc. These cute little fixed blades charmed me so I bought one last month and now I carry it on my belt almost every day. Years ago I carried a belt knife routinely and since folks all over Texas do it I decided to start doing it again, too. Since the blade is only 2.5 inches long it's a legal blade here so I'm completely comfortable with it.

The Boker AK74 was obtained immediately after the Texas legislature decided to drop switchblades from the list of illegal knives. I had others but they're way too large to drop into a pocket except one, and it's called a peanut for a reason - hardly worth the effort.

On any given day now I'll be carrying three and it's virtually never less than one (I don't count the ones in my vehicles).

And, for Brother bhayles:

Quote:
I believe Yoda started this thread because of me...he saw me flailing around in another thread trying to figger out what knife I want. Thanks, Yoda.
Glad to assist.

Quote:
I don't have a clue what knife I want, but I know what I want it to do.
That's a great start.

Quote:
1. First, I want a good knife but am not looking for the "right" name to be on it I want it to do a job, not impress anyone with my choice of brands.
As a rule, however, except for the custom made knives, etc., you will be best served by obtaining a top brand of knife. There are inexpensive brands that are easy to find but the top brands got there for a reason.

Quote:
2. Good quality probably goes without saying. Without going crazy, I'd rather spend a bit more once than have to spend less but do it over and over.
See the answer to number 1.

Quote:
3. I would prefer either pocket or clip carry...I really don't want a case hanging on my belt if I can get what I want without the belt case. It will probably be a clip on rather than pocket because what I want takes a bit of size.
All are good options. A case/sheath on your belt is annoying if it's large, unless it's a machete-type of tool, or a Bowie, and you're in the forests or such and need that kind of tool.

Quote:
4. I like (but am not married to) the tactical appearance (black nylon?) but not a skeleton.
Join the club - and it's a big club! Cold Steel, Spyderco, SOG, Gerber, the list of good, tactical folders is VERY long.

Quote:
5. Probably a single blade thumb opening lock blade, but you guys might show me a reason for something else. (I also have to consider the knife laws in Georgia, which I am looking into now.)
I like folders that open with a thumbhole like Spydercos or with a stud, like so many other companies use.

OCGA 16-11-127.1 on GeorgiaPacking.org

There's your current GA law on the subject. Looks like the lebgth of a blade is somewhat restrictive. Texas says 5.5 inches. Georgia says 2 inches.

Quote:
6. I'll probably carry it hunting so something for cleaning game is a plus.
Tactical folders will work but a folder is not really good for that. Too much junk gets into the mechanism.

Quote:
7. I want something that would be good in a 3 day bag as well as my pocket...everything from cutting cord to build a shelter to cutting small branches...SMALL branches...to use to build a fire or support a small tarp shelter.
If you'll only have one you'll have to make some compromises but any good, quality knife will cut cords and small branches.

Quote:
8. No whittling, fingernail clipping, etc.
Those are purpose built knives. Tactical folders have a different purpose. I don't know how to get around that 2" restriction but a folder in your pocket or day bag is easy; for woods work I prefer a fixed blade.

Quote:
9. Just a good EDC knife.
Keep reading here and listen to what folks say.

the 2 getting most pocket time for now. I also have many benchmade knives. I always carry one of the pre mentioned along with a small victorinox knife. If by some odd chance I leave the house without my knife I will turn around to get it. When I travel by air if I don't check a bag the 1st thing I do when we get settled is find a store and buy a pocketknife, then when we leave I give it to the 1st. Cop I meet at the airport as a gift.

Thanks...and I THINK the 2" law applies only to school safety zones if you have a GWL, which I do.

The man who held Alaska Guide License #1--can't recall his name, but I read his memoirs years ago--used a Buck 110 as his primary knife for dressing out thousands of animals up to and including brown bears.

Not "tactical" (I've never been sure what that means when applied to knives unless it means blades designed for fighting, which generally are very limited as to other uses), but they and similar lockback folders have cleaned untold millions of game animals.

When I was still able to hunt I preferred a fixed blade; but I would have been quite okay using any of several folders I've owned, including Schrade's carbon steel clone of the 110, the Old Timer 125OT.

Shouldazagged-

Was that guide's name Ralph Young? Just guessing. I think he took out Warren Page for bear when Page was at Field & Stream.

I do carry knives daily, even at home. The right pants pocket gets a Swiss Army knife (SAK) because whenever I carry a stockman or trapper pattern, I always need some tool that I'd have had on a SAK.

Which SAK depends on the day and the anticipated need. Usually it's a Spartan; has been a Soldier on occasion. I think the former Soldier is now the Pioneer. Silver Alox scales and thicker blades than on most Victorinox knives. I gave my son my Soldier/Pioneer on his last visit, but may replace it.

If I want a smaller knife in my pocket, I have three examples of the Executive model: two red and one black. That gives a choice of colors and spares. A little Classic rides in the inside vest pocket of most coats. It's handy to reach there if seated and often opens mail. It provides scissors if I don't have them on a larger knife that day, and the Spartan does lack scissors.

I carry a larger, locking blade knife in a discreet black Cordura belt pouch that most observers probably mistake for a cellphone. Tonight, it's a full size Gerber Combat Folder, my usual at-home knife in that role. I sometimes wear the medium sized Covert model, pictured in Guy - Harold's post.
I sometimes clip the small one (Mini Covert?) to an inside coat pocket, but not in lieu of the larger. Neither the large Combat Folder or the medium Covert has a clip now. I don't carry them that way, and the handle doesn't feel good in the hand with the clip.

When I go out, I worry that the Gerbers might impress a cop as being a folding form of a Bowie, stiletto, poniard, or dagger or stiletto, all prohibited here. Having Combat Folder marked right on the blade does leave that impression! So I wear a Benchmade Model 710 or a Puma lockblade, either the Model 0921 or a copy of the Buck Model 110, but with white Micarta scales.

My belt folder has to be large enough to kill a dog or person who attacks, and we've seen a coyote here, too. But it may also cut a seat belt in event of a car accident.

I have a friend in Sweden who writes fan fiction about the TV show, "Criminal Minds." Given her moderate difficulty in English, she does a good job. She just had a chapter where Spcl. Agent Emily Prentiss had to run to an FBI car and rummage in the first aid kit there for scissors, to cut free a kidnapping victim tied to a chair in a house about to explode from a bomb placed right by the victim. She succeeded, but if she'd had a knife on her, it'd have saved vital minutes. An episode of that show also showed an agent who sent another to a car to get his Swiss Army knife from the glove box. Why do these people not have knives in their pockets or purses? Don't most real agents, the men, anyway?

I doubt that I'll have as dramatic a need for a knife as they do, but it's on me, if needed. I have faced down a couple of dogs with knives and stopped three thuggish men in their tracks by opening a Henckels lockblade of the sort carried by many German hunters. (At that time, there were no concealed carry handgun licenses in Texas.)

I have too many knives to discuss all here tonight. I haven't even had dinner yet, and it's nearly midnight. Within reach of me at the computer now are a Spyderco Delica, a Spyderco Endura, a Wenger SAK, and a Grohmann Russell Canadian Boat Knife. A Fallkniven A-1 is close, too. (But so is a CZ-75B 9mm and I'd reach for it before I would the A-1 if someone was forcing entry.)

I've carried pocketknives since I was a kid, and you could do that at school then. I'd hate to be without them. I prefer sheath knives (fixed blades) for outdoors work.

My son usually has a Benchmade locker with a tanto shaped blade and a multitool. I think he should have a SAK, but he seldom carries one. His wife has a Camillus Barracuda (?) that I gave her. My daughter has a Victorinox Executive in her purse. She especially likes the scissors. I'll give knives to a couple of my grandsons. My brother and his sons never carry knives. They have a sort of soft-shoe mentality that precludes them carrying any "weapon". That just baffles me. I can't say more on this board about the underlying issues with them. But it vexes me.

I love good knives. I tend to sharpen blades on ceramic rods to avoid wearing the steel down. I occasionally oil the joints on folders and oil blades, lest they rust.

I don't understand people who'll pay a lot to see a movie or a football game, but who shirk at spending much money on a good knife that'll last a lifetime.

Carried a Buck 110 for years when I lived in New York. Then occasionally did carry a Spyderco Mariner when working on the spill response boats. carried the 110 until I retired in 1995. Now a Benchmade Griptillian or another benchmade knife. Small gun shop in town sells the Benchmade knives and usually every Christmas I buy another to keep the other pocket knives I have company. truth be told I really don't know how many pocket knives I own. one of these days will have to round up all of them and count them. The Buck 110 I have had since 1977. Frank

I'm surprised to see that there are quite a few Spyderco / Swiss Army Knife combos being carried. I prefer the Victorinox SAK. Another knife I like is the Zero Tolerance ZT301. It's a bit steep price wise so I'm looking at the ZT350TS as a smaller, lighter and cheaper option. About half the price but more than half the bigger knife. Anyone have insights into these knives?

I tend to buy a new pocket knife every couple years, currently carrying a Zero Tolerance ZT350 with partial serrations. It has been a very tough knife so far. Blade wasn't super sharp from the factory but has held an edge well. I still need to invest in a decent sharpener. I have not been gentle in the use of this knife but it has handled the abuse well.

Surely, hunters must carry them.

Do you know about a game ranger there named Harry Wolhuter knifing a lion that was dragging him off to eat? The hide of the lion was on display at Kruger Natl. Park for years, but Wolhuter's injured shoulder never healed right. That's where the lion grabbed him. He stabbed it in the heart with his other hand. The knife was by I. Williams, a London maker, similar to the American Dadley pattern Green River knife. Blade was six inches. Williams's knives were marketed as the Pipe brand, also. It was a type widely used by butchers to "stick" animals such as sheep.

I've read Wolhuter's own account of this and it was a pretty stirring bit of prose. If you've been to Kruger, is that knife and hide still there?

I'm a big fan of the ZT line and while the 0301 and 0350 models are great knives I like the 0550, (top right) and the 0566 (second from top left side) a little better. I find both the 0350 & 0301 to be a bit wide for my taste.

There are laws relating carrying dangerous weapons particularly to public meetings like protests or demonstrations for example. Self defense is not a reason for carrying a knife for example, you must justify why you are carrying it, e.g. as a tool.

A dagger, i.e. two sided blade is by law a dangerous weapon so that's a no-no. Single sided blades less than 10cm long is not regarded as a dangerous weapon.

The law applies throughout the country but there is no guarantee that specific policeman is conversant with the specifics of the law relating to knives so it's best to avoid trouble.

I can't comment on the Kruger National Park. It is vast with numerous "camps". I haven't heard about the hunter either but that is some feat. I've been around some lions up to 3 months old and they're pretty powerful so an adult would be vicious. The roar of a lion can be felt inside your body... they exude power.

That is an impressive collection of ZT knives!!! I've envious. Unhappily I don't have access to many different models of ZTs. Apart from those mentioned I've seen ZT560/700/770. Cost is a big issue here. The ZAR/$ exchange is about 11.50 to the $ plus taxes and profit so for me that's thousands of Rands.
