I found myself looking at 1911's, but there was no way I was going to spend $1000 ( not my accountant let me) on one. Just not in the budget. There a few to choose from but I was reluctant at their quality. I went to cabelas for some other stuff and saw a remington 1911 r1 for 650$. I couldn't resist. It was a very good quality firearm at a not bad price, I thought. Exactly want I wanted a no frills 1911 with a few modern touches.

I really like mine that I bought 3 years ago NIB at a gun show. Your post makes me very happy about the current price. Think about installing an after market hammer for regular shooting sessions. The GI hammer spur can bite if you have big hands.

EDIT: We visited the WW 2 museum in New Orleans last weekend. The 1911 on "technical display" listed an effective range of 27 yards , must be because of the military sights.

I like the fact it has the 3 white dot sight picture. Im used to that because of the factory sights on my m&p's. I'm also excited about the fact the r1 has a match grade barrel from the factory. To me that's another extra on top of a great price.

Are they even assembled by Remington in the USA, or any final fitting done here?

I bought the standard Remington 1911R1 a few years back. I've been really happy with mine.

The only real gripe I have about my Rem 1911 is that the 'black oxide' finish wore-off quick(compared to similar finished guns I own and use). Had some wonky casting irregularities inside the dust-cover that scratched the slide finish(a known issue with the frames)...and that's about it.

Good points are that mine(despite the series 80 safety) has a great trigger...shoots fantastic as far as accuracy...functions and feeds great too..not magazine picky as mine will function fine with ancient 1911 mags...cheap mags..expensive mags too.

Remington is closing (it may have already closed) its New York factory and has produced its last run of NY-made 1911s. The final 1911s have "Last Production Run" and an outline of New York State on the slide, and were apparently sold to employees and their family members.

OP, you have good taste in 1911s. I have the Commander size Remington and absolutely love it. Mine was purchased when there was a $100 factory rebate, so total cost was $525 plus tax. Certainly a well made gun and very reliable.

I bought one of the Remington R1s when they first came out and have been very pleased with it. I believe these guns have the absolute best out-of-the-box trigger of any 1911 currently made.

Having shot Colt's for years, I was pleasantly surprised when I shot my friend's R1 Enhanced model. It's quality was easily as good as my Colt and it's accuracy was better. The features of this gun made this R1 look as if it was a $1000 or more 1911. I was so impressed with the performance and appearance of this pistol that I placed and order for the stainless R1 Enhanced shortly there after. The R1s has a beautiful stainless finish like no other. A great 1911 at a good price and I got a $75 rebate to boot!

I bought a new R1 three years ago. When I received the pistol, I noticed that there was oil pooled in the plastic carry case. Oil had leached into the wood on one grip. I called Remington. The rep was very courteous and promptly sent a new pair of replacement grips and screws.

This R1 is very accurate with a nice trigger and is not picky about ammo. I enjoy shooting it.

A gun has no brain.. use yours

I too bought the original R1, now I'm seeing them for as little as $425.00 after the rebate now and again! I really like mine, works well with a wide range of bullet profiles and loads with zero malfunctions so far. Not bad for a cast frame gun. I'm waiting this time for the price to come down for the Commander version.

+1 on the R1. I bought the blue 1911. No frills but welcome improvements in sights, match barrel and excellent trigger. A part of me wishes I had bought the stainless but I am happy.

27 yards was probably at least twice as far as anyone ever needed in combat.

Accuracy-wise, some GI guns might not even keep all of their shots within the -1 (center of mass) zone of an IDPA target at 27 yards, even from a machine rest. They were built for reliability, not accuracy.

I've had a bit of a 1911 itch lately and the Remington looks very good for the money, although I don't get enough range time with the guns I already own. Besides, I've owned 3 or 4 and hate chasing brass.

IF you wish to have a 1911 that is reliable, etc., and inexpensive -

check out the Rock Island Armory...made in the Phillipines; they have a couple of offices/shops in America (One in Pharump, Nevada). Good reviews.

I bought one a couple of years ago at a local gun show for $399 OTD.

Love my R1 Commander. Accurate, handsome, and has functioned flawlessly so far. Biggest downfall is the grip safety digs into the webbing of my hand and becomes annoying after a magazine or two.

I handled,(did not shoot) a blue R1 "Enhanced" model a while back. I was much impressed with fit and finish. Working the action was as smooth as any 1911 variation I ever put my hands on.

To answer some questions.
I am a proud ilion ny Remington arms employee. The 1911 pistol and bushmaster rifles have moved to Alabama. ( F.u. Cuomo) the last run 1911 was built for employees and family. I bought 1 it's beautiful. But sad that we build such a gun for the reason. But as far as we know Remington civilian guns like all shot gunS and hunting rifles and Marlins lever action will stay in ny. Last I knew the 1911 will still stay hand assembled as all Remington firearms are

I purchased my Auto-Ordnance US ARMY WW2 1911a1 because it's as close to a USGI model as I'll ever get. At the time it was only $389. It's been flawless for over 600rds now.

My Chinese norinco 1911a1 with its forged frame and slide for $300 was a good buy. It's one of the best platforms for doing builds from. I installed a nm barrel bushing $15 and a new surplus USGI barrel $59, doing all the fitting myself she shoots clusters and cloverleafs at 25yds no matter who shoots it. That's using Russian wolf ammo too.

Remington manufactures its 1911s in their new plant in Huntsville, Alabama.

Their corporate headquarters are in Madison, North Carolina.

I understand their Mayfield line of rifles are made in Hickory, North Carolina, but I don't remember ever seeing any NC economic news about that.

L've been very happy with mine. For the money, it's hard to do better.

I bought a 1911R1 in early 2011, no complaints. It was reliable and accurate right out of the box, and after several thousand rounds it's still running great. Only changes I've made are Ahrends grips and a arched steel mainspring housing. A friend of mine likes the R1's so much he's bought three of them.

I have the upgraded carry full size and its been flawless . I have a gun shop up the road from me selling the basic one for 499 I looked at one and the trigger was great every week I thick about getting one from them man 499 is hard to pass up and I have 4 , 1911s now .

I looked at and considered the R1 but I don't particularly like the bulky rear sight. I much prefer the snag free Novak style.

Very nice - and a great way to memorialize the final production of 1911's in Ilyon, NY. It was a fine thought on the part of Remington.

I've been seriously looking into the Remington R1 Enhanced Commanders, they seem to have all the features I want. However I haven't found one to handle locally. I'm a bit hesitant to order one online before I handle one in person.

A WW2 Vet I know bought a Rem 1911 when first models were
out. He didn't own a hand gun, thought he should have a house
gun and bought the Rem1911. The only handgun he ever fired.
The clerk at Cabelas told him to strip it down and clean it before
shooting. He did, but couldn't get it back together. I had a tuff
time getting it together. The insides looked like they were milled
with an aze. I was under the impression these pistols were made
in Turkey. That's the only one I ever fooled with, I have no
experience with newer models.
