Default New to me '03 Springfield

Years ago I had an '03 with a 1921 barrel date. But I envisioned myself to be a "true collector" of military guns and I wanted one with a WWI date so I sold it. I have waited more than a decade to buy another and gave up on a WWI date that I could afford.

So I bought one at Cabela's with a 1930 barrel. I was disappointed until I googled the serial number and found that the receiver was made in 1930 so the barrel is correct for the rifle. It also came with a CMP certificate of authenticity showing that they sold it in 2004.

The stock has no cartouches and the only marking on the stock is a crisp D under the pistol grip. The bolt has a different serial number but the last four digits of the receivers serial number has been etched on it. I dug out all of my '03 books and it shows traits from several eras, just as you'd expect as a CMP rifle.

Does anyone know what the D might indicate? Depot?
