Can S&W guys help me with lite primer strikes?
Not sure where to post this. I have a new Taurus PT92. Just fired it for the 1st time Thursday. I am getting inconsistent primer strikes, 8 rounds of 200 did not go bang the first time. Its a 9mm ,and I used Magtech ,Blazer brass Freedom munitions new and reloads. The failures were on all brands so I think its the gun. The duds were barely hit on the primer, the majority that went bang had a much deeper strike. Before you tell me to throw the gun away and buy a S&W. Any insight? Is there a Taurus forum? Y'all did a great job of help on my 15-22. Thanks in advance BiggB

The Taurus forum I'm familiar with is TaurusArmed.net. Someone here will probably be able to help, though.
Firearms & Knives - Other Brands might be a better place to ask this.

Make sure the firing pin is clean. Blast it with some spray cleaner. When you've done that there is a test you can do with a pencil. Make sure the gun is unloaded. Close the slide. Put a pencil down the barrel eraser toward the breach face. Point the gun up and pull the trigger. The pencil should clear the barrel. Do this DA and SA enough times that you are satisfied you have a good hammer strike. If the gun fails to clear the pencil you have a problem and can look further for binding or lack of proper lube on the hammer or main spring and strut.
I know this sounds silly but it does work. The pencil will clear the barrel. We've put dents in a drop ceiling from three feet away.

Several theories;
dirt or crud or packing in the firing pin area.
Heavy lube there.
Weak spring.
When the LGS is dealing with a hangover or goes temporary blind trade it for a S&W, SIG, Glock, Colt or even a Star.
The best advice is probably post # 2 by ledfowl if cleaning does not work, Taurus experts can assist.

Is this one of the older model PT-92s? If so, the firing pin spring from the Beretta 92 should work, and should be a fairly inexpensive, and quick way of seeing if that is the problem. If I recall correctly, Taurus does not sell replacement parts for their products, and rather than send it back to the factory for repair (on your dime, all the way back to Brazil), you might want to try a firing spring change.
Please let us know what happens.
Good luck,
Dave

They are good pistols, it's probably crud in the wrong spot deadening the FP strike.

Actually, Taurus has a repair/manufacturing facility in Florida. If you look on their web site there is a number to call for info.
