Those are nice knives, and Randall is an excellent name among makers.
I prefer the Bowie style myself.

A 80's era one
I got this at an estate sale in rough condition. I brought it to Bo in Orlando and he fixed this up like new. It has quite a few features for that time and is SS. I have the original beat up holster, but here its pictured with the new one, fitted to the knife while I waited in the lobby. The lobby has alot on display going all the way back.
p.s. How can I get my pics to show up big and clear?

Beautiful knives. I'm proud to carry one. I use to wear their catalogs out wishing I could own one when I was young.

Thinking of ordering a number 1, but am not sure what length to order. I know it is a personal choice, but what is considered the standard length? I'm thinking the commando handle, and 7 inch blade.

I'd go with a seven-inch blade. I prefer that size. If you want a Commando handle, that's personal choice. I prefer the std. handle.
I've handled several and owned a couple, and think the seven-inch is best balanced and the right size for the need.
But check local laws. This model in any blade length may exceed local laws. In Texas, 5.5 inches is the max. legal blade length. You can get a Model 5 in that length. I had one and really liked it. Some military pilots buy it because it'll fit the sheath on their survival vests.
I suggest a stainless blade, not just for the obvious reasons. I tend to see better blade polishes on Randall's stainless blades. This may be coincidence, and limited to my experience. The non-stainless blades do tarnish and discolor on contact with meat. I had a Model 3 with std. blade and my subsequent Randalls have all been stainless. I like them better.
The Model 14 is also an excellent military and survival knife, but is pretty big for routine use in camp or cleaning game and fish. The five-inch Model 5 will do most of what you need, especially if you can carry a machete or hatchet, and you'll want a good pocketknife for finer cutting.
But I love the Model 1. I hate the dip in the blade spine just ahead of the guard, but they can use a Model 5 blade blank to avoid that.
Be very aware that the sharpened clip on these knives may well make them illegal to carry. In Texas, they fit the definition of a Bowie knife and are therefore Illegal for carry in public. You'd need to restrict carry to your private land.
If you are a soldier or cop carrying officially, I think this is waived.
BTW, the Micarta handle option is suggested. On shorter blades, I like a thin butt cap and that'll give a place to engrave. (Normal size cap or pommel on longer blades.) If you get the leather handle, you'll need to occasionally polish it and it can pick up odors and discolor. My Model 3 had a leather handle, and I did give it proper maintenance. My Fallkniven NL-2 also has a leather handle and I'm careful to polish it and to avoid exposure to blood, fish slime, etc. It, too, is only for carry on private land in this state. In that brand, the Model S-1 is the most effective knife that is legal for public carry. It has a lot in common with the Randall Model 5 in that length.
The Model 1 with seven-inch blade moves very well in the hand if you are trained in the Applegate-Fairbairn techniques of knife fighting. Maybe a taller man could use the eight- inch as well. The sharpened clip can be used for hacking at meat or gristle or to kill fish, sparing the keener sharpness of the main edge for other needs. But it can deliver a nasty backhand slash in a fight. Remember , this was conceived as a general purpose combat knife.
Look at Rick Bowles' pic above of that knife that seems to have a Model 14 blade. That with a black Micarta handle and that trim and guard shape would be an awesome survival knife! Rick does that scrim and engraving, if you didn't know.

There has to be something wrong in the universe when you can't own a Bowie knife in Texas.

You can own one, but not carry it in public. The statute referred to singles out Bowies, dirks, daggers, poniards, and stilettos. It also sets a 5.5-inch blade max. length.
I have a couple of Puma knives and a Fallkniven S-1 and a Buck Model 105 as the longest that I'll carry off of family land. I've also worn Lile, Lone Wolf, and Randall knives with five-inch blades. So far, no hassles. Occasionally, someone asks to see a knife, but no complaints. Of course, there's always some jerk who is just jealous. I've had the usual comments like, "That knife won't cut no (sic) better just because it cost a lot and is fancy." The same people who sneer at pretty rifles... But some of these individuals will spend a lot on concerts or football tickets and still gripe about what guns, knives, or great binoculars cost. I don't get it. A Randall knife will please for a lifetime . A music concert or ball game lasts a few hours. And that knife won't damage your hearing, which a loud concert will.

Thanks for the well thought out response. I can carry any length blade, but it cannot be double edged, so I was going to request a false edge on top.

False edge normally means a sharpened clip. I think you want to tell them the reverse. Be sure that you're clear. Normally, the clip/false edge on the Model 1 is sharp, as you apparently know.

A false edge is a bevel without a sharpened edge. The model #1 generally has a sharpened top bevel but it won't be a problem to order it with a false edge.
