Default Is there an AK picture thread?

Well after much deliberation, I decided to trade one of my AR's for an AK a while back. I did what research I could in the short period of time I had and found that the rifle, a Romanian SAR 1, is actually a well respected AK variant so I bit the bullet.

The only thing I have noticed that I dont like is that the rear sight block is canted, there's a gap on one side where it should be flush with the top of the receiver. But, since I'm not a HUGE fan of AK sights as it is, I ordered some Tech Sights last night so I wont even need the stock rear sight.

This is my first AK, so go easy on me. It came with the Tapco folding stock shown, as well as the original wood furniture, and a set of green polymer furniture. Also included were 4 magazines, 200 rounds of 154 gr SP rounds, a case, and a scope mount.

AK owners sound off! I want to see what you have and what cool custom work you've all done.

I had one built on one of Armoury USA's 1.5mm receivers back when the Romy G kits were cheap. More to have an example of an AK in the collection than anything else. Still have a receiver and G kit tucked away to build a Romy folder clone later on.

I bought my first AK variant last year, a Zastava M92 pistol. It's a ton of fun to shoot, and actually fairly accurate with the red dot and a sling to stabilize it. Best of all, the price of 7.62x39 ammo! I recently purchased a couple of VZ2008's, but haven't gotten any pictures of them taken yet.

I traded an O/U 20 Ga for this Norinco. It was filthy. I asked they guy when was the last time he cleaned it, he replied I didnt think you need to clean AKs. Don't know how many thousands of rounds that have been thru it. First time out I was hitting 4 inch bath tiles at 100 yards. I was pleased.

I've also got a Century Milled Receiver that I need better pics of:

The SAR was a ban era AK. Its the predisessor to the WASR. That gap is fine. It doesn't have to be flush and doesn't effect anything. There is such a thing as excessive gap but yours is
fine.

AKs are my go to rifles.

You want AKs?
Here ya go. Last outing with AKs 2 months ago

Over 2000 rounds fired

It may just be the picture but are you sure that's a Norinco? Chinese AKs have hooded front sights, different handguards and thicker receivers....that Romanian/Polish folder wouldn't fit and the bolt carrier is polished. Also all Chinese were blued

Norinco MAK-90 Sporter. Made in China.

Originally it had the thumbhole stock I was told. The folder fits well up through the pistol grip screw into the trunnion. I've had it off several times. The front sight looks Dremeled so who knows. The finish is blued and the bolt and cover serial# matches the receiver but looks like it was stamped after manufacture, maybe when imported. IIRC this is a 1994 model.

Dremel! OK makes sense now! The rest I figured it was just the way the rifle appeared in the pic. It's weird that the owner swapped or sanded the handguards cause even on the post ban MAKs the handguards were still shiny looking. ...like Ditrina's

This thread is dangerous. I have the urge to buy an under-folder, but no overriding impetus...yet.

Loving it so far, I knew there had to be some AK people out there. I've transitioned to a more classic look, and I'm digging it

Very philosophical thought. Probably true.

I've owned 2 over the years but they did not grow on me.

The 2nd one was a 223 and I bought it about 7 years ago. I also bought a few thousand rounds of 5.56 with it. Sold the AK, kept the ammo and have a stash for my Colt AR match target Match.

Thanks folks. This thread pushed me over the top. While I am not immediately buying an AK-47 or AK-M, I am going to buy one. It's inevitable. You know how I know? When I ordered a case of 5.56 to see me through the summer, I added a case of 7.62 x 39 Red Army Standard.

Buying the ammo before the rifle... what am I thinking... that's like buying an oil filter for a vehicle I don't own yet.

Well that caliber isn't exactly boutique. You can always sell it and maybe even make $$$.

Start buying mags. SGAMMO has some good deals right now on like new Hungarian milsurp at $12/mag. Or Yugo mags for the same price. The only mag with bolt hold open, if that makes a difference to you

Hmm failed to upload ny pic. These AK pistols are fun. Cheap too.

It mihht be a good idea to get ammo before the gun, remember i had an AR Before the m855 crisis and that sucked because i had no ammo!

My favorite hunting variant is the .308 Super Vepr. I'll have to dig it up for a picture or two. Shot quite a few doubles on whitetail deer, passed on a few, and never needed the ten round mag.

This will have to suffice: Beauty and The Beast...

Saigas and Veprs do not use standard AK mags unless modified, which is fine with me.

Something calld a "Draco" right? I'm not much into rifle caliber "pistols".

Yup. There is usually a slight delay before a run on ammo v.s. run on firearms, ammo going first. I figured what the heck. Might as well have some handy.

Oh great! I'd been thinking of a semi-auto .308. I have to put one one the radar for 2016. After the AK, I'll have to save up for that.

Draco is just one. It's the Romanian AK. There are also Yugo and Bulgarian. Both come in 556 and 7.62. The newer Yugo 556 have an AR mag well and take AR mags in the same manner as an AR. Bulgarian use standard AK style mags for 556.

The AK 308 (Saiga, Vepr. Also come in 7.62x54) are single stack 5 & 10 round. In my pictures of all the AKs lined up on the table and floor you will see a 7.62x54 Vepr, 3rd on the left on the floor with a 24 in barrel.

Out of the two the Vepr is "better". Molot, the company that makes Vepr, build military RPKs and their Vepr civilian rifles are based off of that. Thicker receivers, thicker barrels and all receivers have a bulge towards the front, underneath the ejection port. This gives added strength and rigidity to the receiver.

I'm usually parked in the M&P 15 sub-forum. I like my AR-15's. The direct gas impingement system is something which I never gave much thought. The rifle poops where it eats, bolts get carbon fouling, crud blows back into the action. I just accepted it. I installed Nickel Boron treated BCG's to make cleaning a little easier.

Then I got this rifle that doesn't poop where it eats:

I started toying with the idea of building a .300 BLK AR pattern rifle. I started thinking that a .300 BLK build would get out of hand. I'd end up with a rifle that poops where it eats, and have a rifle chambered in expensive hard to find ammo.

.30 caliber rifle + relatively affordable ammo + long stroke gas piston = Itch for an AK-47 or AK-M.

Here's one not shown so far, a Norinco (China North Industries Corporation) imported by Clayco from Clay Center, KS for a short time in about the mid-1980's. What differentiates Norinco and PolyTech AK-47's from most other stamped metal AK-47's is the thickness of the metal at 1.5 mm versus 1.0 mm for most other AK-47's. "Clayco's" are differentiated from other Norinco AK-47's by their dark black-green bakelite-like furniture. I'm not really sure if it's true bakelite but it looks similar.

Here's another one that has not been shown yet, a GSAD "spiker". Golden State Arms Distributors, Inc. imported these for a very short time in the mid-1980's. These are were made at the Jing-An factory, the manufacturing arm of the Chinese Police/secret police agencies. Like other stamped metal Chinese AK-47's they have 1.5 mm thickness metal versus 1.0 mm of most other stamped AK-47's. They feel a little heavier but are very sturdy. What differentiates a GSAD import AK-47 is the lack of stampings and the lighter color wood furniture. In person it is a very attractive rifle.

And, finally (?), another one that hasn't been shown yet ....... a real odd-ball, a Norinco 86S, a factory bull-pup AK-47. The rumor is these were only imported for a short time in the 1980's and probably less than 2000 imported. It is a very compact (26" total length) rifle. The charging handle is on top of the receiver under the carry handle. Some might think it's got a face only a mother could love or, if you're like me, you appreciate the interesting engineering.

Looks like Momma beat it regularly.

I'd adopt it in a minute though.

The lowly, much maligned WASR 10/63. I must have hit the AKM lottery, cause this one is perfect.

I think the best AK/AKM buy is the brand new Russian izmash saiga in 223 and 308win. Hands down. The 308 saiga 16" barrel using south African 308 ball ammo will constantly shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100yds. I benchrested three of them right out of the box. The saiga is manufactured and assembled in the same building as the Russian ak47.

That's for states like California who don't allow pistol grips. If you notice the other one has the bullet button. Called so because you can't just release the mag. You need something pointy, like a bullet, to stick inside and then release the mag. It makes the mag "permanent."

You can either have a regular mag release but no pistol grip or have the pistol grip but on a "permanent" mag

Seriously? Well, thanks for the answer. I guess it should be obvious what those are for but I live in a world where reality usually take precedence, and without mind-altering drugs, it's hard to conceive of such nonsense.
Makes you wonder if legislators that come up with these ideas are serious or if they have a brother-in-law who makes these add on parts?

It's not because of anyone's relationship. Those bullet buttons and pistol grip adapters can be bought online from many different manufacturers. Companies that sell firearms and are willing to ship to California will gladly add these for you before shipping. And the law wasn't made to sell them. In fact, these were invented to keep your otherwise illigal firearms
