Default L.F&C-1918 Trench Knife- Field Modified

Years ago I came across this U.S. made L.F&C-1918 Trench Knife. It is in pretty good condition, but had been "field modified" (I've been told) removing/grinding off the index finger guard - supposed to make handling quicker in combat by leaving the index finger freer.
It also has a matching scabbard in good condition, missing one of the clips, they broke off easily "they say."
I'm getting to that age where I'm paring down my collection a bit, and want to know more about this knife. Mostly -- what does the "field modified" condition do to its value???
Haven't found anything about the mods on the internet, maybe I don't know where to look?
Would appreciate any help you folks could give me.

It's beautiful example. Is there a provenance?

Thanks for sharing the photos, I've always found knuckle-duster design knives to be so visually impressive.

They have been so heavily reproduced, I always hold back when I see one for sale. You knife looks real to me. . .the brass rivets used in the scabbard for example. The modification wouldn't bother me at all. It looks good to me. If I saw it out for sale at $1000 I would have to think long and hard about buying it and might actually part with the money.

I agree with docB. It looks all correct.Taking into account the handles were removable, IMHO, it's easily in the realm of a $1,000 knife. (The scabbard alone is worth around $500)

It sure would be nice to know when the mod was made, as I've seen pics of them showing up all the way thru Viet Nam.

You might try going to militaryfightingknives.com. I think the owner is John Gibson. They have a lot of knives for sale and some links on their site to very knowledgeable collectors.

Nice knife, it sure looks handy with the missing knuckle. If the patina matches, the modification would not bother me.

A neighbor of mine found one stuck to the stud behind the plaster when he was remodeling his bathroom. I was and am very jealous.
