Default Not a Mystery Airplane, but a Mystery Rifle

The P-40s probably narrows this one down to two countries.
So what is that rifle the soldier is holding?

Could it be an Arisaka Type 38?

Bingo you won. Look at the rear of the bolt. Probably a 6.5mm or 7.7 too.

This was when our guys volunteered to fight for China. This is where the name flying tigers came from.

I'm going to say that's a Mauser 98 of some variety and a Chinese soldier. Zoomed in, the front barrel band is visible and is unmistakably Mauser, the pistol grip is too rounded to be a Type 38 and the bayonet sits directly under the barrel with no space between like on an Arisaka. The bayonet looks like its been cut down and the soldier has wrapped leggings but it looks like he's barefoot.

The Chinese did build their own Hanyang Mausers, both in '88 and later '98 the types. Maybe one of those?

Chinese bought and copied a lot of German stuff so I'm guessing it's a Mauser. Although, to be fair, the Arisaka was also a Mauser copy

I believe it is a Type 24 (Chinese copy of 98 Mauser). Flying Tigers were fighting for China, which is why I don't think Japanese weapons. This picture is in the link.

He's either wearing "alligator shoes" or related to Bigfoot.

As Karmann Ghia reported, Chinese Type 24 rifle.
The Tigers operated in China and Burma.
This photo is reported to be in China.
And that sure is a large Chinese Soldier!

It may look strange to western eyes, but most Chinese soldiers in WW 2 are recruits from rural farming area, most are used to go about bare feet, leather foot ware are a luxury few can afford, as a matter of fact, leather boots simply won't last in hot; humid weather and rough terrain, remember the VC and ARNV during the Vietnam war? their foot ware are mostly sandals made from wore out truck tires, seems like the soldier in question is wearing sandals made out of straws, which are much in abundance, of course it won't last but it only took a few minutes to weave up a new pair, and I've seen pictures of Chicom soldiers have several pair of spare sandals hanging from their back pack.

The rifle most likely is a Mauser type of Chinese origin.
