Default Mauser Hsc .380

Since I was beginning my vacation this weekend I decided to go across town to the gunshow in Pasadena. I have not had much luck at any of the shows the last couple of years but you never know. Yesterday I changed my luck. I have been interested in the Mauser Hsc since I was a lad and saw pictures in one of my gun books. Never could seem to find one in the right combo of price/condition. This one was sitting out and after I snagged it I found out that it came with the original box, paperwork consisting of manual, exploded diagram parts list, factory test target and both magazines. If it were not for slightly buggered grip screws I would rate it 97-98%. The interior is as good as the exterior. It looks like it may not have been fired after the factory test. I got it for $400 cash OTD and I am a very happy camper.

[QUOTE=JohnRippert If it were not for slightly buggered grip screws....
Strange, isn't it, that someone with an ill-fitting screwdriver would bugger up those screws but not even damage the wood on either side and also keep the gun in such excellent condition.

I got it for $400 cash OTD and I am a very happy camper.
You sure did well, box & all!

I've also admired the looks of the HSC for many years.

Although it's been almost 17 yrs. since I left SoCal, I used to go to all the gun shows. Can't recall one in Pasadena.

I had one and found the trigger to be horrible. It was never consistent in the let-off and there was no grouping of shots. The targets looked like I used a scattergun. I traded for a complete German Lugar rig and have never looked back.

I don't want to denigrate the pistol, but I have been led to understand that the Mauser Hsc .380 had a tendency to jam more than other auto pistols of its type.

A range report appears to be in order.

We have a Pasadena, Texas. It's right outside Houston.

I have heard something like that as well. This one will be a safe queen, especially if I can find grip screws in good condition. I usually buy guns in the 80-90% range as I am more of a accumulator than a collector. Seeing as this one is in such good shape with all the goodies and box, it will not be fired by me. I have a couple other .32 ACP pistols that go shooting.

I have a small collection of pocket pistols including a Mauser like yours. I understand the originals in .32 were more reliable but out of my price range. My .380 came with none of your goodies and isn't in as decent condition. I've shot it a few times with no issues, but wouldn't carry it.

My experience with a .380 caliber HSc was that only a couple of brands of hollow points were reliable. The old Remington which had a bullet profile very near an FMJ with little lead exposed and probably little chance of expansion, and Win. Silvertips.
However, with ball ammo it was 100% reliable. While they are also a fairly heavy pistol, they are not that comfortable to shoot in .380 cal. A few mags full will leave you with a sore web between your thumb and forefinger.

Another reason why I prefer .32 in a small pistol. Just could not say no to this one.

JohnRippert: I have always loved the aesthetics of th Mauser Hsc. i'd be willing to bet anything that were the pistol chambered in .32 ACP, it would run flawlessly! (Remember, the original chambering for the Walther PPK was .32 ACP as well).

The original German Walther .32 ACP holds a particularly bright and conspicuous place in history. Adolph Hitler, used that particular pistol/round combination (in conjunction with a gelatin capsule filled with Potassium Cyanide held in his jaw molars) to end his wreched and murderous life.

Now there's a "bright spot" for you!

I always thought that the Mauser Hsc .380 was on of the best looking pistols around. The most gorgeous is the similar SIG .380. Magnificent, sexy handgun. However, like the Beretta 8x series of .380s, the equivalent Browning BDA, the Colt Government .380s, like the Star Model S, but MAYBE not the actual Colts (I think they're actually a little smaller but not nearly small enough) , they're all just too big for a .380. If I'm going to carry a gun of that size I can carry my 6906.

That said, the Mauser Hsc is definitely COOL!!!!

Nice snag! I've always loved the "Art Deco" looks of the Hsc. I have a twin to yours and with the right ammo it is a very reliable and accurate little beastie. Mine is very picky about what hollow point it will function with, Power Ball and Hornady Critical Defence works quite well.

In case you decide to shoot it, I have one of these that was highly unreliable. On a whim, I ordered a +5% mag spring for it from Wolff and after swapping out the old mag spring, it now runs fine. I haven't run a wide variety of ammo through it, but so far so good. I'm not really sure why I have it, I think it rode along on some sort of trade, but at least now that it is reliable, I can put it away knowing it will shoot or I can trade or sell it to someone, which I could not do while it was a paperweight.

Congrats on your HSC, nice find. I have a Nazi marked HSC in 98% condition but have never fired it. Always like the look of the HSC.

I love the HSc, and have had a few. Only have two now; an early one with the lanyard hole in the bottom of the butt, and a very late, French made one with lanyard loop for French police use.

Walther had already come out with the PP and PPK when Mauser designer Alex Seidel designed the HSc. He had to avoid the Walther patents. As a result, the DA pull is pretty hard. I've shot a friend's 380 HSc, and the recoil spring is so heavy you almost can't retract the slide. I didn't like the recoil either. I'll stick with the 32 ACP version.

Incidently, there's a new book out on the HSc; VERY good.

Just traded into this commercial 32ACP this past weekend. I've been interested in HSC's for a while and just happened into this one when looking to offload another Mauser.

Very Nice HSc and a complete package at that !

The Interarms import stamp is the early style that appears after the GCA act of 1968, There should be a two digit number under the elk horn stamp on the barrel as well as the left side trigger guard that tells the year it was made and tested (looks like a 72 ? ) ,
IIRC the 32 acp versions were for the civilian market since German citizens were not allowed to own firearms chambered in military calibers,

I have owned a few HSc's and they are a bit more heavy and snappy than the Walther PPK when fired ,
The Mauser slide locks back after the last round is fired like the Walther but unlike the Walther it automatically releases when a magazine is inserted which I dont like, The hammer is a neat design and has an audible "Two click" sound before firing as well as a half cock but the Mauser has no loaded chamber indicator on the slide like the Walther, The Mauser slide is very easy to remove as you simply depress the round button inside the trigger guard and lift the slide off which I like, This system was utilized on the communist era CZ 52 as well as the later aluminum frame HK 4 which was patterned after the Mauser HSc .

Only stamp on my barrel that I could find was the 9mmKurz over .38 that is visible through the ejection port. The serial number is the only thing next to the trigger guard. That serial is smack dab in the middle of the 01. range for the .380 so '72 looks very likely for mine.
