Default CZ SP01

I wanted one of these a while back, but never got one. Seems as though I am too late to get the neat pistol bayonet for one, it having been discontinued. But I traded for one today. I have been ruthlessly culling my accumulation. A couple old rifles, a black powder revolver, two Jennings and a Ruger 9mm auto and I had a new one. I opted for the regular one, not the tactical. I think the difference is mine allows cocked and locked carry while the other has a decocker only. Two 18 round mags, cleaning rod, brush, and lock were in the box. I had wanted the shiny bright stainless CZ 75. But this will suffice. It is big, ugly and quite heavy. A nice large all steel gun. I need to get a holster to carry it and find more mags.

I took it out and shot it. Smooth is the word that comes to mind. Shooting it is positively boring. Nice trigger, no recoil to speak of, drills holes.

I will keep it alongside a Taurus 92 I have, which can also be cocked and locked. I have 18 magazines for the Taurus so am stuck with it. I suppose a modern carry gun is allegedly a striker fired hammerless polymer gun. That is okay, I found what I wanted.

I have the Phantom, the polymer version. It does what it says on the can.

Does the polymer version soak up recoil as well, or is it a bit snappier?

Factory Sp-01 mags are expensive. For cheap mags that work great look at the Mec-Gar CZ mags especially from Greg Cote. They are $20-30 depending on which ones you get compared to the $45+ CZ wants for the SP-01 mags.

The SP-01 was my first CZ and still a favorite of mine. They have a tendency to multiple as I now own 7 of them. CZ's really respond well to some trigger tuning and can be made to have an exceptional trigger if you want to spend the money.

I've got an SP-01 worked over from Angus Hobdell's CZ Custom Shop. Excellent gun, and great work done at the custom shop, I highly recommend looking into one, if interested.

The trigger is absolutely beautiful in both DA and SA, and SP-01 is a nice, solid feeling gun. Ergonomics of the gun work very well for me. One of my most accurate handguns, if not the most accurate. Some day I'm going to have them do a CZ 75 for me...

It probably moves a little more than my fullsize steel 9mm pistols, but with the low bore axis and excellent grip it's not so much that I really notice.

Thanks for the tip on spare mags. Now I just need to decide whether to get 19rd mags, 17rd mags, or the svelte 15/16 rd mags.

How much difference will a trigger job make? I like the factory set up, finding it smooth, but I am always open to making good into better...

Is a replacement threaded bbl available? Suppressors are legal here and this strikes me as an interesting option.

I am carrying it now with a decent quality U.S. made nylon hip holster I had laying around. This seems less than ideal, but does work under a coat and does at least have a thumb break.

With more than a little Browning in the design, I have always found those to be very attractive-looking guns.

Congrats on your trade, and please feel free to post up some pics !

The 16 round mags have a thin metal base plate that will fit flush with the frame. The 17 round AFC mag bodies are ever so slightly longer and have a plastic base pad that sticks out a little further. The 19 round mags are 17 round mags with a plus 2 plastic base pad that are close to the overall length of the stock SP-01 mags. I personally like the 17 round mags, but I use mine for competition and the +2 base pad makes them too long to fit in the box.

As a new CZ owner you might like me end up spending countless hours and money at Cajun Gun Works and CZ Custom

As for trigger work it all depends on how mild or wild you want to go (aka how much to you want to spend). Stock triggers can be rather heavy and a bit gritty. They can be helped by use/dry firing or by polishing up the trigger components. Most CZ's are oversprung from the factory so some lighter weight springs really make a big difference. The cheapest option would be CGW spring kit (SPKG1). The floating trigger pin (TR-PIN) and reduced power trigger return spring (RP-TRS) are both good cheap additions as well. To really transform the trigger check out their Defensive Carry Package (75100) or the Pro Package (75110).

As an example my SP-01 is my IDPA competition gun and I've done pretty much everything I could do legally. It basically has most of the pro package except CZC Comp hammer instead of the one from CGW. The trigger pulls are extremely smooth with a crisp break in SA and a very short reset. The pull weights are now half of what it started with when new (now @ DA 5.5#, SA 2.5#).

And both CGW and CZC have threaded barrels for the Sp-01.

Took my new CZ75B in polished stainless out to the range today for the first time. It feels as solid and dependable as my 686's, with excellent ergonomics, balance, and recoil management. After 200 rounds I am hooked. The sights are garbage though, and need to be fixed. My old eyes strained from the very first group, and by the last rounds I almost couldn't see the front sight. That never happened to me on any other sight picture. I started by shooting 17rd. 3 inch groups at 7 yds. and finished with 8 inch groups with the front sight blurry by then. Otherwise, a great shooter.

I agree regarding the 75B's sights....my 49 year old eyes can't see them very well either. I put another 100 through mine (I don't have the stainless version) last evening. I am thinking of giving the sights the white nail polish treatment in the dots to see if that improves things. I would think so, anything's better than the "dots" that are in those sights now!

I also just came back after putting another 100 through it. I wanted to try it with the halogen spotlight over the lane table on the sights. It required stepping back a step and slightly beyond the ballistic dividers. It helped alot, but it is impractical to require that much light. I am also considering the nail polish, but there is not much real estate there to work with. I need brighter as well as bigger, something as visible as the Big Dots on my husbands Walther.

Since CZ includes a test target from 25yds, it made me curious to try it. I never shoot that far because the glasses I need to see the sight, turn the target too fuzzy. My last fresh target and last 3 rounds made a 1 inch group, four inches left of point of aim. My bad trigger control usually has me left an inch at 7yds. This all steel pistol feels great to shoot... to bad they put the worst sights I have ever seen on it. Otherwise, it would have been great out of the box.

Mine came with Tru Dot branded night sights. They seem to work quite well. An Allen wrench to adjust them for windage came in the box but I have not needed it.

I have seen what look like quite serviceable sights on several CZ's. That's what makes their OEM choice on this 75B even stranger. I was pleasantly surprised to see the upturned beavertail on mine, contrary to the factory website image.

I agree the stock 3 dot CZ sights are pretty basic, but at least they are all metal unlike some other brands (cough*Glock*cough). I always found it kind of a weird choice that the SP-01's come with night sites, but non of their more likely to be used for carry compact models don't.

I have done the nail polish trick on a few of my CZ's. I did one all three dots to a neon orange and two others the neon orange front with white rear dots. I found it does help, but I will probably end up changing out the sights on some of them in the future. My favorite CZ sight is CGW EZ drift fiber front/black serrated rear. The front post is narrower compared to the rear notch so they are easy to acquire, but not something that would lend itself to say bullseye shooting. I will probably try out a set of Tru Glo's TFX fiber/tritium sights on my P01.

After seeing the CGW sight combo, I found a similar setup on a 1911 at my LGS. I found the front sight too narrow to see without straining. These old eyes like the wider notch and post with big dots crowning them. Need to find it for the 75B.
