I hear they're good. I might get one someday so that I'll have an A1 style. The R1 is at the top of my list for that.

Old Korean War vet I know bought oneat Cabelas. He brought it
out in a cigar box. He tore it down to give it a cleaning and was
embarrassed that he couldn't put it back together. After razzing
him about being Navy I was going to do my best speed job to
aggravate him further. I like to hack on Squibs. Took me 20
minutes to put it together and had several minor cuts on my
fingers from the rough machining. It took me 15 min. To get
barrel bushing in it. Took it out back and shot a box. Trigger
was terrible and stove piped once a clip at least. I couldn't hit
anything with it. Told him to sell it and I would find him a good
38 revolver. Far as I'm concerned there are cheaper knock offs
that are better made.

Like mine a lot. Never had a single problem and it's very accurate. Mine is the stainless version.

My wife got me one for my birthday several years ago. It goes to the range about once a month with me. Each time I shoot 10 magazines of 230gr. Never has it had even one issue. Very nice 1911. I would not hesitate buying one.

I have one that I bought new a couple years ago. In my mind it's the best 1911 you can buy new for under $1000. Mine cost me $625 and it is accurate and handles well. Nice sights, and as for the quality of manufacture, I've have mine apart and saw nothing that would give an old machinist pause as to fit and finish.

I have had the stainless R1 version for about 4 years now and I have never had a problem. Shot great right out of the box.

Add me to the list of satisfied owners. Had the stainless version for about a year now, and it has been perfect through about 1,000 rounds. Dis- and re-assembly is exactly like any other 1911, and while the barrel bushing is a very tight fit (that's a good thing!), the supplied wrench - or any bushing wrench - does the job. Barrel-to-slide fit, and slide-to-frame fit are great, at least on mine.

I bought one 5 years ago shortly after they first came out. I've been extremely satisfied with it. Reliable, accurate and probably the best out-of-the-box trigger I've ever come across. I really think that these are one of the best deals to be found in 1911s today.
Drm50, I do believe you're mistaking the gun in question for a Remington-Rand 1911A1. Jimmy is asking about the much newer Remington 1911R1.

Interesting, Grayfox, I also have a Remington Rand 1911 and it is a pain to get back together sometimes....

We happen to have a nationally known custom pistolsmith as a member of our club. He donates the work to clean up and do his action work on a 1911 every year, which the club raffles off to raise money. The club furnishes the pistol. A couple years ago the club furnished him a Remington and he did the work, but said he would never touch another as it wasn't millspec accurate, (location of pins and parts) and it took him twice as much work to do the work fitting everything to make it reliable enough for him to put his name on it.

Shot an early one and it performed well. I thought the sights were a bit clunky. That's the only issue with me.

I have the R1 enhanced stainless model which I purchased about a year ago. I have owned and shot Colts since the 70s and find this pistol every bit their equal. In fact my R1 seems more precisely fitted and smoother operating than my Colts. I have never had the difficulty described by some with disassembly or reassembly when using the included bushing wrench. I consider the R1 a bargain, particularly when factory rebates are offered.
Like all guns, there are probably some problem ones out there but, mine is a definite keeper.

I've had a Remington R1 Talo version for 2 or 3 years. Liked it so much, I bought my grandson one for college graduation. Both shoot fine and never had any trouble with disassembly or reassembly. Both were accurate right out of the box. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

My son bought one as his first centerfire handgun about 3 years ago. He's put about 1000 rounds of mixed hardball downrange without a bobble.
I bought one a couple months ago, and have been very impressed with it. I've only put about 150 rounds through it but it has been flawless.
I think it is the best deal going for a new 1911.

I bought one when they first came out...I didn't like the series 80 configuration. It wasn't a problem, really, I just decided that I only wanted to own 1911s that were series 70, and had a lifetime warranty. Unless Remington has changed its warranty, it was one year at the time.
For my money, the best 1911s in the $600 area are Ruger and Armscorp.

About 18 months ago a friend bought the base model, Remington R1, and then 6 months ago another friend bought the same gun. Shot both, each functioned well, accurate, but I get some hammer bite on the web of my hand. I like stainless steel handgun as they resist perspiration and might be a little more forgiving if rained on. I bought a Remingon R1S Enhanced, the full size stainless steel version with extended beavertail and some other things I know lots of people like on their 1911s.
I have been very happy with my Remington 1911. It feeds 230 grain FMJs and hollowpoints without issue, and has been 100% reliable with about 450 rounds through it. Tight bushing, but I can field strip it without the bushing wrench using the "Bic pen trick."
A lot of bang for the buck.
Also, it was made in Ilion, NY, so bleep you Andy Cuomo, although I think production might have moved.

Short answer: For the past 4 years no problems with an R-1 and would recommend it.
Longer answer: Two guys with an average age of 80 years tell me the R-1 field strips without a problem. I've never tried myself so I cannot say first hand.
Four years ago, my dad at age 75, got his R-1 after comparing others and with the recommendation of his approximately 85 year old cousin with one of the criteria that it was relatively easy to field strip. My dad says field stripping is not a problem. My dad, son, nephew, and I have put a lot of rounds through it with no problems and it shoots well. As you would expect from a couple guys old enough to have been through the cusp of the depression, and therefor cost conscious, they both thought, at least 4 years ago, the R-1 was about as good a bang for your money as there was in a 1911 platform. Between the two of them they had about 100+ years experience with 1911's, mostly Colts.
By the way my dad's cousin is now in his late 80's and still working everyday in a gun store.

Hey if you like the Rem, have at it, it's a free country. I am just
recounting" hands on Experience with it " that's the first and only
one I've messed with. I've taken hundreds of Colts and other
clones apart with no problems. I know guys with Norincos, that
we're about the low end of quality that are happy with them. So
what? All in all I have found the last few years that Remingtons
quality control is very iffy at best, on all their products. It ain't
my first rodio, 47 years ago I was Weapons Specialist, could do
it in the dark.

This thread needs some pictures.
First look -
After I put on an arched mainspring housing -
I don't know about anybody else's, but mine is completely interchangeable with other standard 1911 parts and comes apart and goes together like every other 1911 I've ever had.
Shoots great, looks great, and made in the USA. What's not to like?

I had one, not a single issue.
However, mine had the threaded barrel and goal posts for sights all set up for the suppressor which I didn't have nor want so I flipped it.

I bought a standard R1 a few years ago...it has been a great 1911 pistol.
My only real gripe is the 'black oxide' finish isn't real durable...and that I skinned the right grip pretty bad in an atv incident....

Got mine about three years ago, great gun, no malfunctions, accurate and even works well with 200gr LSWC's. With the new lower price and rebate you can get em now in the mid $400.00 range.

I had a R1s and the Enhanced model. Both were very good pistols and reliable. I only sold them to fund other purchases.
