First year made, 1972 vintage Ruger Security Six, .357 caliber (pics)...
Check out my latest score from my local pawn shop, a first year of manufacture (1972) fixed sight Ruger Security Six in .357 caliber:

From what I understand, the first year made Ruger Security Sixes (150 prefix serial numbers of which this one is) were fixed sight revolvers, the next year Ruger added adjustable sights and changed the grip frame to be more of a square butt shape, similar to Smith & Wesson revolvers. Fixed sight Rugers became the Service Six...
I have owned previously an adjustable sight, 6" barrel Security Six, which was OK, but I didn't like the long barrel, so sold it. I like the looks of the fixed sight Rugers, the adjustable sights look like an after thought, seemingly perched on top of the frame.
I trained with a similar revolver when I was an Aircrewman in the Navy, qualifying (Expert) with a fixed sight Ruger Security Six (or could have been a Service Six), so this revolver brings back fond memories of training on a Navy Range.
So far, I have only put thirty or so rounds through it to check operation. Shoots fine in single and double action, sights seem to be dead on. I am looking forward to wringing this gun out, and doing a comparison with my Smith &Wesson Model 64 of similar vintage.

Nice example! I didn't know that about the name change from "Security" to "Service" on the fixed sight model. I carried a 1911A1 for awhile in the Navy, but once (just for fun), they trotted out some Rugers for us to try to qualify with. Between the extremely heavy trigger pull in DA and trying to reload from pockets, we didn't do too well! I've had experience with two Security Sixes that had much lighter pulls.

I think you have it backwards. The Service Six had fixed sights and the Security Six has adjustable sights. Wait, I'll look it up.....
Nope....Internet says I'm wrong.
Hmmmmm......

Well, to atone for the error of my ways, let me point you to Ruger's website where the entire range of serial numbers is shown:

There - that makes me feel better.

Hey guy's,
I have a early Security Six, adjustable sight, 4 inch,
serial 150-62804.
It was my understanding that these came out in 71 and mine is a 72 vintage, and they changed the frame (151+ series) in 73
I have heard some refer to them as the humpback version as I believe they changed the grip frame in 1973, cause these early versions tended to ride up when fired. I do know aftermarket grips are hard to come by.
I would love to be corrected on any of this. I was unaware the Security Six was offered in a fixed sight.
I thought?
Security Six = square butt adjustable sights
Service Six= Square Butt, fixed sights
Speed Six= round butt, fixed sights

Re: Op. Wonderful revolver! Just about ideal for anything you'd ever need to do with a four inch .357 revolver. Always wanted one. Just never had money when one came around, or else when had money there were none to be found. You are most fortunate to have such a nice revolver. Sincerely. bruce.

I have 2 Security Six, A 4" Blue 153- & a 6" Stainless 161-.
I've had the 6" since 85. It was my first revolver and the only revolver I owned for a lot of years. Love that gun

Must have been a run of these recently. That's a really nice example the OP has.
I got one last week too. Mine is from 1979, and is marked as a "Police Service-six" and man it was "finish challenged" shall we say. On the other hand it was also "inexpensive." I cleaned it with Flitz, and got rid of the rust, dust and crud, then touched up some of the bare metal spots with a cold blue pen and it's at least somewhat presentable.
I put 100 rounds of my 38 special reloads through it the other day and it's a good solid shooter.
I owned a couple of these back in the day, both with adjustable and fixed sights. Good solid guns.

I've owned a Security Six, a Service Six, and a Speed Six. Let the first two go, both to friends in need of a solid .357. I still have the Speed in 2.5 barrel and carry it a lot.

I had a first year .357 4'' and it had adjustable sights. Got my permit in 72 and trying to find adjustable sighted S&W .357s were basically impossible back then. So I settled on that new Ruger the shop had. Seems I made a very good choice, and I still have it.
I did do a trigger job on it a few months after I bought it. Easy gun to work on!
