Default Colt .44Special Nickel Buntline value?

At a local GS they have a 3rd gen buntline in 44 special it has the carved white stag grips it is new ,never turned. There is no box the dealer say's a collector needed the money and sold it.He is asking $1500 for the gun.I looked at J.Taffins book and he said beware of fake repro's on these as there weren't many made. What should I be looking for to tell if it's a colt.? Is that a fair price? Here is a pic of the pistol.

Looks like a righteous 3 gen Colt.
Likely the least popular configuration made.
The claim about first gen "Buntline's" can't
be proven...no Colt Records.
IMHO...$900 tops then re-barrel for a shooter.

Added response.
From over on the Colt Collectors forum: A response that makes a little more sense.

"I see asking prices for this gun with the factory boring wood grips sometimes up to $1900. I don't know how far fetched that is, but I feel safe to say that the gun you pictured is priced great, especially with that bonus of the $300ish worth stag grips. These guns did not sell well and some were sent back and rebarreled shorter. I would buy that gun if I saw it at that price. welcome to this forum and good luck."
Edit: "Those grips look one piece. And they are of exceptional matching color and bark"

Once Colt SAA grips are fit to the gun they are married to THAT
Colt SAA...rarely will they fit another Colt.
It is your dough...good luck.

You are saying that the grips in the pictured gun are not original to the gun? Added later? Is that correct?

Thanks,
Gary

I don't claim to be a Colt man but that seems more like a 4-3/4 inch .45 price to me. I'm sure the guys on the Colt board have better info than I do.

Gary...
Only a Colt Letter will confirm but.. don't
think so. They appear to fit well but likely
aftermarket.
Check out the Colt Forum if you have not.
Lot's of good info...slow sometimes but solid.
For $1500....I think you will find a more serviceable
Colt SAA. That Buntline will/would be a slow sale.
A quick computer check will bring you up to date
concerning Colt serial numbers for the SAA.
