Default Tulsa - Found EXACTLY what I was looking for

At the Wanenmacher show in Tulsa Saturday I found exactly what I was looking for, which is an uncommon enough event that it made me feel really good. Usually what I find is something that I didn't know that I wanted until I saw it, which is pretty good too. (Click on the pics for a larger version.)

At first glance, if it weren't for the grips and barrel marking you'd swear it was a Smith & Wesson. Looking closer you can see that the rear sight is different, and the lug for the ejector rod is slightly longer.

Anyway, what I found was a Taurus Model 76, which is a target revolver in .32 S&W Long. It's the Taurus equivalent of a S&W Model 16 and while just about as uncommon, is a fraction the price. Of course I already have a S&W Model 16 (two actually, an M16-3 in .32 S&W Long and an M16-4 in .32 H&R Magnum) but I wanted the Taurus just because.

Interestingly the Model 76 that I bought has the factory roll stamp on the barrel for the .32 S&W Long caliber, but also has been stamped .32 H&R MAG. The second stamp is through the blue but it is very neatly done, so I don't know if it was done at the factory or by a gunsmith. Taurus did also have a Model 761 in .32 H&R Mag - maybe they rechambered this gun for someone, or maybe did it before shipping. I don't think Taurus does factory letters like S&W and Colt does, so probably no way to find out. After enlarging the picture, it looks maybe like it was laser engraved.

I also already have the Taurus Model 96 in .22LR (equivalent to the S&W Model 17) so now I need to get the Model 86 in .38 Special (S&W Model 14 equivalent).

So on the next row over at the show, I found exactly what I wasn't looking for - a Model 586 in .32 H&R Magnum. Whaaaat?

Oh - not a S&W Model 586 but an H&R Model 586. I hadn't known that they made such a thing but the price was right so I had to have it. It is styled and loads like a single action, but except for a half cock for loading, the mechanism is the standard H&R double action.

I have a Taurus nickel plated .32 Long with a 3" barrel (Model 74). The double action trigger pull is incredibly heavy, but the single action is maneagable. I'd like to have the trigger pull lightened, but I can't find someone that will do the work.

The smaller-framed Taurus revolvers came from dies that they purchased from S&W. (I called a few years ago and was told this by the Customer Service people at S&W). I do wish I could get this done, so that I could use this nice little piece as a "back up" revolver.

Be careful with the H&R revolvers when loading them with hot ammunition. The cylinder steel tends to be tempered on the brittle side. When overloaded, these have been known to develop cracks and ultimately fail.

Just exercise caution and you'll be all right.

Love the the case color hardening on the H&R. I bet it is a hoot with .32 Long wadcutters.

Nice catch on the model 76, it's a nice looking gun. You jumped right into the .32 club. Would be interested in how the Taurus shoots. Hope you are going to the range soon, Larry

I've seen a Taurus 761 and it had the exact same markings.

The owner said that was the way they were sold. Supposedly, Taurus brought them all in as 76's and the H&R conversion/remarking was done here in the USA.

HI Tom, read the link and you should be president of the .32 group. Nice selection of guns. Hope you fire the Taurus soon and from a rest of some sort, really curious as to how it shoots. Looking for a .22 K frame cyl to build another .32. This one will,be a PPC type since I have the barrel. Larry
