Default Ruger Speed Six I got yesterday

A gentleman on one of the local gun trading sites had a Ruger Speed Six for sale, and I met up with him yesterday afternoon. I had never seen one before, and it was something I wanted to at least take a look at, since I had the itch to make an addition to my stable.
It was in fantastic shape, nice trigger pull in both DA/SA, and he even had the narrow Ruger wooden grips. This is a heavy gun! Anyway, only "flaws" were a turn line which wasn't bad really, and someone had painted the front ramp sight red, but really did an excellent job. Barrel is 2.75". I bought it for $425. Here are some pics with it wearing the Pachs that it came with.

Congratulations!

I have it's cousin, the 2.75" Security Six. It's a fantastic revolver that I enjoy shooting more than any other I own.

$425 is a good price these days.

I think you did okay, price wise. If you go online, you can find some Ruger factory target grips for the gun at reasonable prices.

The 2.75" security six is another gun I would be interested in, as well as some nice target style wooden stocks for the Speed Six. I'll probably start looking for some in a couple weeks.

I have a police service six in 357mag. Stainless, 2 3/4" barrel purchased in 1976. Awesome revolver. Lubed it with moly. I have a security six in blue w/6" barrel too.

Nice find!, congratulations! Those things are becoming quite rare in my neck of the woods. I have a 4" Security Six in stainless, love it! Now if only I could find its shorter brother!
Enjoy it and I hope it serves you well!

I have a 4" Security Six and have been looking for a snubbie. Great guns!
I've said it many times, I truly believe the worst mistake Ruger ever made was dropping the "Six" series of revolvers.

My Speed Six with 2 3/4 barrel is the revolver I carry the most. Shot a ground squirrel with it once. I was as surprised as he was as it was a fairly long shot.

The Ruger Speed Six is probably one of the most under rated revolvers in existence. One of Rugers biggest blunders was dropping the Six Series. Yours is probably early 80's with the rounded blast shield and bill board barrel. Rugers web site has the product history where you can date the gun.

9mm and .38 Spl.

$425 is a decent price.

Just like the S&W M28's that used to sell for less, the six series Ruger, especially the Speed-Six, are starting to be recognized for what they are, and increased interest/demand has begun to drive up prices.

I paid $500 for mine over a year ago, but it was NIB with a Safariland lined leather holster, and belonged to a friend moving out of California that needed $$$ for the move, I knew I over paid back then, but now... like they say, I didn't pay too much, I just bought too soon.

It's one of my favorite snubby .357s. As a K-frame sized revolver it's very comfortable to shoot with Pachmyer or Hogue grips and it's capable of very good accuracy.

Mine needs a little tuning when I get around to it in terms of shooting to point of aim as it shoots about 4" left at 25 yards, but milling .004" off the right side of the front sight should bring it into line.

Ruger didn't do away with the Security/Service/Speed Six Series as much as evolve it into the GP100, using the crane lock off the Red Hawk.

You could argue that the GP100 is slightly stronger, and if Ruger had left the changes at that it would have been ok. Sadly however, they also went with a more modern, but (IMHO) much less attractive and much heavier full under lug barrel that ruins both the looks and balance of the revolver.

On the other hand, the Six series was developed to withstand the steady diet of .357 Magnum loads that was the norm for police departments in the early 1970s and it's built like a tank, so the additional strength of the GP100 is overkill.

They both share the same side plate-less frame, and massive fire control parts that basically never break.

Nice weapon sir.
The Speed Six and Security Six handguns are IMHO
two of the best .357's to ever get manufactured.
Both built like a tank and with proper loads can
shoot with all of them.
At 425 you certainly did well.
We just don't see many of these nowadays.

Thank you for the continued input, all. Very nice stainless speed sixes that were shown off in this thread!! Like I said before, my quest has begun for a stainless Security Six with either a 2.75" or 3" barrel.

Another good thing about making a deal with this gentleman was that he also had a old 3" blued Charter Arms .44 spl Bulldog---a "Son of Sam" version. He brought that along as well, because I had never seen an older version of these guns. It too was in great shape. It was no model 24, but he has taken care of it. Trigger was ok but far from atrocious. I'm going to buy it from him in a couple months after my slush fund reserves regenerate.

Back to the Six, I can't wait to shoot it at the range.

NIB with accessories? Stainless steel snub? No, you did NOT overpay. And you did NOT buy too soon. As I said above, I've never seen a Speed-Six (or any -6 revolver for that matter) for over 5 years.

Getting uglier out there. Stay safe, partner.

If the Bulldog is in great shape and you can get it right,
jump on it.
I have as my EDC the 3" Blued.
I like that the .44 cal bullet makes a big hole.

The Bulldog already has my name on it, Chuck. He's holding it for me until mid-January---my slush fund will be back in business by then. I too like the big hole potential, I have been wanting a .44 spl for awhile.

I also have its cousin the Security Six with a 6" barrel. The Ruger Six series were excellent revolvers. All of the examples I've shot have been tack drivers.

I'll tell you how much I like the Ruger Security Six/Speed Six series. Years ago I traded a blued 4" Colt Trooper Mark III for a stainless 6" Security Six and always thought I got the better deal. Of course I later sold the Security Six and replaced it with a blued 4" Model 19 which I still own, along with a 4" Model 586 and a 4" Model 28.

I carried that exact revolver, for years. It was my ever present "tractor" gun, on our farm. I shot some frightfully hot loads through it, but mainly carried a working load, of a 158 gr. lead Hollow point at about 1,000 fps.

It killed an assortment of noxious varmints, and once solved a two legged varmint problem. The problem ran away, thankfully.

My paddle holster disassembled itself, while I was bush hogging, and it wound up under the cutter. I recovered about 15 pieces of the beloved gun, really destroyed it.

With Rugers well thought of warranty program, I briefly thought of sending it to them, but realized that might be a bit of a stretch. I saved the parts, and a few were used in repairing a friends Ruger.

I still miss the revolver.
