Guns have been inexpensive around these parts. The current sale was a Hi Point .45 for $129. I had been wanting to try one for a while. Finding one for less than the cost of a brass frame cap n ball, I could no longer resist.

Sure it looks like a hair dryer fed with battery packs, but overall balance is not....horrible. Sights actually seem well done. I probably will not get to shoot it until the new year, but it is interesting.

I am going to try to scrounge up a Lee Loader and see if I can get it to run on black powder cartridges.

And I have been young, deep in the last century. Joe

I've had one for a couple years. Got it from Buds for around a hundred bucks. Ugly OD green, but fires anything steel cased up to SD ammo. I'd be willing to bet it could fire block power cartridges. Will be interesting to find out. And when I'm in your area, I'll be happy to have a few brewski's with you.

That's alot of zinc for the money.

I had a 9mm one that worked like a champ, but I've always thought the 40/45 version looked heavy and awkward. Never even picked one up.

Until a day or two ago. I stopped at a new to me gunshop, and the clerk was showing one to another customer. We got to talking, they handed the gun, a 45, to me. I was surprised. It wasn't really that awkward. It really wasn't that bad at all.

Keep us posted on it. I know I enjoyed my 9mm.

They aren't pretty or stylish, and are sort of like that girl you went with for awhile back when you were single that you didn't want to take home to meet your mom and dad (I had a couple of those). But from what I have read, they are functional, reliable, and accurate enough for any normal shooting purpose, and at a price less than half of what you'd pay for anything else. So why not buy one?

Is it a straight blow back action or locked breach?

Straight blow back with a zinc slide. I used to be able to say that one had held up to IDPA shooting at our club, but his slide broke during a match. They replaced the slide free. The owner says it is a great gun, and the warranty is great. It has been back for repair 3 times now.

There are, supposedly, steel inserts in the slide. I have not taken it apart yet to look at the innards. The diagram in the manual suggests a design with much in common with the old Jennings Nine and a hundred years of other striker fired pistols, but with a much more massive slide.

The balance improves when a loaded magazine is inserted.

The grips are too slick from the box. I wrapped mine with athletic tape for now, but a slip on rubber grip is in order.

Oddly, I had a random nylon holster that fits it.

Youtube suggests that the 9mm C9 will in fact work with BP cartridges.

Seems well suited to being a house or car gun if reliable. These sell well here as outdoor beater guns.

Some shops seem to get full MSRP for these guns, which is $199. Regular price locally is $149. My savings of $20 paid for a spare magazine.

I imagine that this gun costs less, when adjusted for inflation, than my great grandmother paid for an Iver Johnson .38 top break during Prohibition. Nearing the century mark that gun is still operable.

Sign me up for a Hi Point over any of the other 'affordable' options, especially any of the Ring of Fire guns.

The biggest turnoff to me is the roll pin takedown, but for the money saved, one can buy a punch set.

Man, if I ever tripped over a NIB one for $129 (which will never happen here locally), I'd impulse-buy it in a heartbeat. Neat-o!

I have no doubt BP loads would function the action, but why would anyone want to use them? Might be an interesting exercise for some handloader to determine how light a load would be required to get reliable functioning. If I had one, I'd do that. Would probably extend its lifespan considerably.

Saw a guy at the range a month or so back, with a HP 40 carbine...... got me thinking......

I took mine down one time just for grins and giggles. You have to be careful when you remove the slide. There is a little spring loaded dingus that will go flying if you give it half a chance. Praise the Lord, I was able to find it...in the corner under a desk.

But there really isn't much reason to take them down. For the most part, I really didn't clean mine. Oh, I'd run a paper towel patch through the bore once in a while, and clean what I could reach through the ejection port with a Q-tip, but that's about it. Put a drop or two of oil here and there. It never failed to work.

I'd probably spray it with poly safe Gunscrubber these days.

Why not? At least for me, this is mostly about "fun" anyway. I've got a few serious guns, but most of them by far I have "just for the fun of it."

I need to look at the manual again, but I believe it now suggests a field strip at the 1500 rd mark or there abouts. I believe the key thing that works the enclosed trigger lock doubles as a takedown tool. A spare ghost ring sight was also in the box.

If you squint, and it is dark, the gun is not so ugly.

I like the smoke, fire and stink of BP and the Hi Point looks to be a gun that I could clean with a garden hose. Thus....the perfect candidate.

Agree I have shot H-Points in 9mm and .45 at our range. They are totally reliable, accurate, and have a decent trigger, as well as a "life-time" warranty. I certainly cannot give negative remarks for someone who owns one or aspires to buy one

Halfway and one more step

I've toyed with the idea of getting one, but always thought maybe the .380 would be a good choice. Lower pressure, lighter spring. Though it's the same size as the 9mm so there's no saving on it's bulk.

And generally speaking 380 ammo is a lot more expensive than 9mm.

That factor alone tips the scales to the 9mm IMHO.
